Abandoned Bungalow
At the foot of the hills, three and one-half miles northwest of Fullerton, the stands an abandoned 32-room modern bungalow, it not having been occupied by its owner for four years.
Not only is this cosy and costly country home abandoned to go to rack and ruin, but costly furniture, several up-to-date carriages stand in one of the three barns, one a family carriage with silver mounted harness to go with it, a pretty white buggy, a hunting wagon, a buckboard and in the garage stands a $7000 Tourist automobile, never having been used since the owner deserted the large ranch, which bears the name of Los Loma Rancho.
A thousand dollar ice box was installed in the bungalow and has never been used.
Twenty other buildings, some quite large, are dotted around this immense bungalow, perhaps erected by the owner to be occupied by hired men.
Several green houses, a tennis court, a dog kennel on which a vast amount of money has been expended, are left to ruin.
Also the owner once had an up-to-date chicken farm, inclosed with wire netting and furnished with all the modern conveniences for poultry raising, and which now is one of the many places on the farm to be destroyed.
The buildings, the equal of which for elegance and expensive design and arrangement, it would be hard to find elsewhere in Orange county, were erected in 1894.
The largest building is arranged in seven separate suites, each suite having a separate bath and lavatory.
Two pianos and other smaller musical instruments are in this building. The furniture is rich, upholstered and days, nights and Sundays estimated 60,000 tons of all their sweetness extra converted into sugar in California and eastern New York.
The factory here enjoy distinction, according to S. Chas. F. Saylor, of the U.S. department of agriculture, ing the sweetest beets in States and hence in the city.
Last season the average first two months was worth $6.07 per ton, while average for the whole year was 19.3 per cent sugar, farmers $5.79 per ton.
Tests of beets thus this year seem to sustaination being 20.8, 21.1, 22.0, 20.3 per cent for the first delivery.
“Tent City” on the grounds is now having an already contracted up for next season’s build.
There is a great demand by products from sugar making the molasses thrown ally from the centrifuge first sugar manufacture put through a filtering proves it in quality form.
This is considered equally for pound to corn and y the low price of $1.50.
The other important sugar beet pulp, is now necessity to dairymen fifty cents per ton free chute.
All departments of manufacturing being no operation, the stream
The buildings, the equal of which for elegance and expensive design and arrangement, it would be hard to find elsewhere in Orange county, were erected in 1894.
The largest building is arranged in seven separate suites, each suite having a separate bath and lavatory.
Two pianos and other smaller musical instruments are in this building. The furniture is rich, upholstered and Colonial style.
Cosy corners, dens and numerous large fireplaces are some of the many attractions of the interior.
Some of the buildings are left wide open while others were recently put under lock and key, owing to the fact that some one had lately entered the large bungalow, turned the water on and left it running. The cellar was filled with water when discovered.
A keeper had been employed to remain near the Rancho but he has also deserted the place.
Bats are burrowing large holes all along the lengthy front porch and many bat nests are to be found. Bees also have stored away many pounds of honey in the rear of the building.
The ranch, comprising 1700 acres, is mostly set to olives. Near this large olive grove is a packing house which was evidently used for handling the large crop of olives.
Mr. Emery, the owner of this magnificent property, came here fifteen years ago, provided with ample resources to satisfy almost any desire by an indulgent multi-millionaire parent. During the ten years he remained on the ranch costly improvements were made.
Los Alamitos
Los Alamitos, July 31, 1908.
The harvest of beets has matured. Meantime as the beets were ripening, supplies of limerock from Colton, fuel oil from Los Angeles and coke from Durham, Ga., and other supplies from all quarters of the globe have been accumulating in the sugar mill and on the factory grounds here.
Men and teams in the field last week were busy topping and plowing out and Monday morning the
ing, supplies of limerock from Colton, fuel oil from Los Angeles and
coke from Durham, Ga., and other
supplies from all quarters of the
globe have been accumulating in the
sugar mill and on the factory
grounds here.
Men and teams in the field last
week were busy topping and plowing out and Monday morning the
teams began hauling beets to the
bins at the factory and to cars at
Smeltzer and Buena Park railroad
stations. Field tests showing a good
sugar content and the sheds being
filled with the necessary raw材
rial for sugar manufacture, promptly
at six o'clock Wednesday morning
the whistle sounded for the beginning of beet slicing and the force of
men who have been gathering for
days were assigned to their places in
and about the factory.
About forty-eight hours after the
stream of beets began flowing at one
end, the stream of white sugar began flowing from the other end of
the factory and this will continue.
Drying preparations simply develop dry catarrh; they dry up the secretions,
which adhere to the membrane and decompose, causing a far more serious trouble than the ordinary form of catarrh. Avoid all drying inhalants, fumes, smokes and snuffs and use that which cleanses, soothes and heals. Ely's Cream Balm will master catarrh or cold in the head easily and pleasantly. All druggists sell the 50 cent size. Ely Brothers, 56 Warren Street, New York.
The Balm is used without pain, does not irritate or cause sneezing. It spreads itself over an irritated and angry surface, relieving immediately the painful inflammation.
Ely's Cream Balm contains no cocaine, mercury nor other harmful drugs.
Nights and Sundays until the midnight of 60,000 tons of beets have their sweetness extracted and are shipped into sugar crystals for California and eastern markets.
The factory here enjoys the dissonance, according to Special Agent M.F. Saylor, of the United States Department of agriculture, of having sweetest beets in the United States and hence in the world.
At season the average for the two months was 20¼ per cent, while the total average for the whole of last season was 23.3 per cent sugar, netting the yields $5.79 per ton.
Beets thus far received a clear seem to sustain that reputation being 20.8, 21.1, 21.0, 20.0 and over cent for the first five days in City" on the factory fields is now having a boom.
Ready contracts are being signed for next season's beet crop.
There is a great demand for the products from sugar making because molasses thrown off origin from the centrifugals in the sugar manufacture, which is through a filtering which imitits in quality for stock feed.
It is considered equal pound for round to corn and yet it sells at low price of $1.50 per barrel.
Other important by-product, beet pulp, is now considered a city to dairymen and sells at cents per ton fresh from the departments of beet sugar manufacturing being now in active operation.
