The Los Angeles Express is printing under the head, "Twenty-five Years Ago," many interesting items of the long ago, as witness the following: "Anaheim is to lead our county in the ostrich enterprise. A company is said to be formed with $30,000 capital. Forty acres of land have been purchased near there, and the birds are at Woodward's Gardens, in San Francisco, ready to be shipped here. Dr. C. J. Sketchley is to take charge of the business. If the profits of ostrich farming are as large as represented, many farmers in Southern California will go into the business on a small scale, keeping a few birds, which will almost care for themselves." Three hundred New York clergymen have petitioned Congress not to increase the navy, arguing that the United States now pays 65 per cent of its revenues for its military establishment. And yet, there are those who believe that at least a competent military establishment is the surest preventative of war.
