ADMIRAL DEWEY IS SEVENTY WASHINGTON, D. C., Dec. 26. Admiral Dewey, the only full admiral in the American navy, was 70 years old Thursday, having been born December 26, 1837, in Montpellier, Vt. Ten years ago, early in the morning of the first of May, George Dewey, then merely a commodore, made history and wrote his name in the list of the world's great naval commanders. On that day he sailed into Manila bay and with his little squadron of warships sent the Spanish fleet to destruction. Many friends of Admiral Dewey, including several of the officers who served under him at Manila, called at his home today to felicitate him. The admiral celebrated his birthday with a large dinner party last week, so there was no formal observance of the anniversary today beyond the receipt of many congratulations. Admiral Dewey is the only living officer serving his country who will remain on the active list until he wishes to apply for retirement and thus be able to point with pride to an unusually long and uninterrupted service. He began his remarkable career early, and could he live his life over again, he says, he would not change the course it has taken. After a preparatory training at the Norwich military academy, supplementing the valuable personal instruction of his father, who was one of the best known physicians of his day, young Dewey entered the naval academy at the age of 16. Immediately upon leaving the academy, four years later, in 1858, he was ordered to active service and, lacking only a few months space of time, he has now been 53 years in the navy. Admiral Dewey says that, excepting the close proximity of the bullets, the most interesting training he received after was one of the best known physicians of his day, young Dewey entered the naval academy at the age of 16. Immediately upon leaving the academy, four years later, in 1858, he was ordered to active service and, lacking only a few months space of time, he has now been 53 years in the navy. Admiral Dewey says that, excepting the close proximity of the bullets, the most interesting training he received after leaving school was under Admiral Farragut, from 1861 to 1863, in the Mississippi squadron. Admiral Dewey at 70 is mentally and physically strong. He finds a good deal in life to keep him young and to all appearances he is no older today than he was when he fought at Manila bay ten years ago, and the vigor with which he commanded proved that he was much younger than his years. Yesterday he spent Christmas at home, but this morning, as usual, he was up bright and early at his office before many of the clerks had reported for duty. He is president of the general board, which keeps him in touch with all that the navy does. At present he is very much interested in the trip of the American battleships from the Atlantic to the Pacific coast. Few public men so honored as Admiral Dewey has been have more deeply felt the appreciation of the country’s esteem. He says that the memory of the magnificent reception which he received upon arrival home from Manila bay is one of the things that have helped to keep him young. Superstitious Bonapartes. The Bonapartes always were superstitious, especially the mother of Napoleon. She always had a presentiment that the rise and fall of her family would occur in the same century, that the glory which was prophesied for them would be followed by disaster. And the prediction was verified. She died in her eighty-seventh year, having lived long enough to see the downfall of all her children. Napoleon I always feared Dec. 2 as an unlucky day, and it is related of him that before every important battle he would throw dice to ascertain if he were to lose or win. The “red men” whom he always saw going to battle with him was a delusion that caused him much suffering.—Toronto Saturday CATARRH ELY'S CREAM BALM Sure to Give Satisfaction. GIVES RELIEF AT ONCE.
