Patronize the Advertiser
In this day, a great majority of people are guided in making their purchases by the regular advertising announcements of the merchants. This fact is well attested from the response which merchants receive whenever they make announcements of special bargains, and also from the fact of the large increase in the advertising business during recent years. People spend their money for that which pays them, and the fact that the most successful men of the country are the ones who are the most persistent and constant advertisers is evidence enough that advertising pays.
But the other side of the question is that advertising pays the purchaser even better than it pays the advertiser. The family of modest income will find that a study of the daily advertisements will go a long way toward stretching their dollars to cover their expenditures. It may be conceded that discrimination should be used in responding to advertisements in the same way that the advertiser should exercise judgment in placing them; but when the merchants whom we know in our every day life and whom are known to be honest, honorable and responsible in their dealings, advertise bargains, it is safe enough for us to accept their representations without further question, in the same way that we would accept their word in any other business matters. When any one of the leading merchants of this city states that he is pricing goods, which regularly sell at $1, at
every day line and whom are known to be honest, honorable and responsible in their dealings, advertise bargains, it is safe enough for us to accept their representations without further question, in the same way that we would accept their word in any other business matters. When any one of the leading merchants of this city states that he is pricing goods, which regularly sell at $1, at 80 cents, it is reasonable to accept his word for it.
There are certain people who, when they are in the market for any particular commodity, go to the store which experience has taught them furnishes the best values and buy regardless of what the price may be, doing so upon their general information that the price which is asked by such a merchant is a fair one, and is as low as goods of the same quality could be purchased for anywhere. This is an entirely proper course for those whose incomes are such that they are not compelled to watch the corners; but the great class of purchasers who are constantly confronted with the problem of stretching out their dollars to cover their expenses, will find very material help in their perplexing problem by waiting to buy goods slightly out of season and studiously watching the advertising announcements.
P. T. Barnum acquired a tremendous fortune by advertising, but his advertising practices were not calculated to help the advertising business for the reason that he made representations which were not borne out by the facts. This is not the case with the special announcements of the merchants of today. There is always enough good merchandising news to tell which is truthful, and it is the exception rather than the rule to find merchants who regularly make untruthful statements in their advertising. It is wise business to watch the advertising and to be guided thereby in making purchases. The wide awake advertiser is more than before sunup and wander off to blue-gum trees, where he makes and hear things that will live spirits. If he be lucky enough approach two or three flickers morning game, he will be paid long walk, though often these derful birds are seen near houses, gesticulating, bobbing, ing in strange tones, dodging fencing and parrying with on other in indescribable manner. Often near the ground—say ten—but oftener high above your a group of the flickers perform on the boughs of the tree, be the trunk itself, standing str up by means of their sharp toe sisted by the stiff tail-feathers this fashion do they also sleight night.
When they fly you will not red flicker of the underwing and feathers, like shafts of flame, aping and disappearing as the darts here and there or off straight line and settles down. East it was the yellow-shift flicker, but here it is the red-sided. Always you will know it by woodpecker habits, by the strong beak, but more surely by black crescent under the chin hiding the pinkish brown throat the polka-dotted breast. If stand quite still by the blue-trees, the flickers will think breakfast and settle down to gourorial pleasures, probably at an hill. If you count, you will not perhaps a hundred "bites at a cry" before the bird takes brew. Our walnut-growers assure me now and then the flickers help themselves to their best, cracking soft-shells with perfect ease tossing the remnants over shoulders at the astonished grower.

If you are up and visit the orange groves (with course the consent of the owner) may discover the varied thrush work in the tree mulch, scratch and feeding upon the rich fat graft that hibernate in the dead leaves.
While you are in the orange grove you might look for the last nest of the mocking-bird. It probably be in plain sight on outside of the boughs, pretty up. But that mocking-bird! The singer and his wife are so alike one can never be certain as which he is gazing at until he opens his mouth to sing.

For Cold Rooms Hard to Heat
The coming of the cold weather gives rise to the question of how best to heat those rooms and hallways of the house that seldom if ever warm up, no matter how big a fire there may be in the furnace or other heating apparatus.
The best way out of the difficulty is the use of auxiliary stoves—and of these it would be difficult indeed to find anything so handy and at the same time so clean and economical as the Perfection Oil Heater.
To begin with, it is absolutely safe. The wick can be turned as high or as low as possible without danger. But perhaps the most desirable feature of all is convenience. The Perfection Oil Heater can be easily carried to any part of the house where more heat is required. It may be a cold bedroom, a chilly hallway, a sick-room. Or you can use it to heat the bathroom while you take your morning bath—the dress by it—and then carry it to the dining room and eat your breakfast in comfort. The occasions on which it can be called into use are numerous—and once you have tried the Perfection Oil Heater you'll wonder why you ever struggled through a cold winter without one. Another advantage is the smokeless burner, which prevents any of the unpleasantnesses that perhaps have given you a poor idea of oil heaters in general. It is very handsome in appearance and is beautifully finished in nickel and Japan.
Another home comfort for the long winter evenings is the Rayo Lamp, which can be used in any room in the house—from parlor to bedroom. It has the latest improved burner, making it unusually safe and clean, and an ideal lamp for all round household use.
The Perfection Oil Heater and the Rayo Lamp, combining as they do to make the house warm and cheerful, are valuable addi-

Addition to Southern California National Forest
Washington, Dec. 30.—The President has just signed a proclamation creating two additions aggregating 78,000 acres to the San Gabriel National Forest in Southern California. The additions consist of lands lying on the slopes and foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, and protecting the streamflows on the territory known as the San Gabriel watershed on which Pasadena, Pomona, San Bernardino and a number of smaller towns are dependent for water supply.
The damage from fire is always serious in this region and the Forest Service plans to build fire lines and trails through the new additions and these will aid materially in preventing serious fires. On one of the additions there are about 15,000 acres of woodland which will contribute to the fuel supply of the region.
These additions will bring the total area of the San Gabriel Forest up to 633,295 acres.
T. M. Webber, Forest Surveyor of Northwest India, who was recently

Ireland was not always so treeless. It once contained some forests, but they were wasted same way that the forests of some other countries have been waste reign of Queen Elizabeth saw of Ireland's native forests. Some trunks buried in the bogs bear to the size of the trees once there.
There is scarcely an acre in except rocky ledges, or sit where erosion has destroyed that will not grow trees if chance. The British Isles annu-port lumber to the value of $75,000. Ireland could grow timber to supply a large part without using any of the land voted to agriculture, by plantiests in waste places. The Irrigestry Society has been working years to induce land owners to trees, not for ornament or for shelters, but for profit. Business interested in Ireland see oppor-ture there, and its forestry movement under way promises to have far-reaching results.
