A SUMMER IN BERMUDA
Prof. Esterly of Occidental College Writes of His Experiences on a Recent Visit
My visit to the Bermuda Islands during the past summer was made as a member of a party of students and teachers from several eastern colleges and universities. Bermuda has often been described as "the land of the lily and the rose," but, to a Californian, there is no comparison between that distant group of Islands and his own state so far as variety and beauty of vegetation is concerned.
Indeed, we had not been in the islands long before some of us felt that we might refer to the country more appropriately as "the land of the cockroach, mosquito and onion." The latter characteristic was impressed upon us before leaving America, for the dock at New York might almost be found by a blind man if he were to follow the odor of the vegetable named.
Let us imagine that, on the second morning out from New York, we are on deck enjoying the balmy air, with our steamer in sight of the islands. Soon we shall have entered the very tortuous channel to our landing at Hamilton, and by two in the afternoon we have passed the customs officers and reached the small island that is to be our home for nearly two months.
The island was used by the British government as a powder magazine until a short time ago, and the buildings the troops occupied are still in position. It is unnecessary to describe our surroundings; we were most delightfully situated, and well provided for southern part are filled with access of the beauties of the San Francisco bay country and with articles about rapid strides being made in the reconstruction of the metropolis.
Particular attention has been given to the correction of garbled arrows about the conditions existing in Francisco, and the thorough and systematic campaign entered into to correct the true conditions presented to eastern public has been productive good results—results whose benefit effect it is difficult to estimate.
Realizing that the interests of Pacific states are one, the committee has gotten behind the Nevada Commercial league at Reno in its effort secure the next meeting of the Minneapolis congress for the Nevada town.
California is given an opportunity this matter to repay Nevada for its fluence in attracting the national gathering congress to California.
Acting on the request of Mr. Taylor the committee called together representatives of the commercial organizations of San Francisco and Bay cities to arrange for the reception and entertainment of the United States navy when visiting California. Result of the meeting was the formation of a permanent committee which will make arrangements for a thorough California welcome to the office and men of the navy, when they arrive in California waters.
The opening of the winter season on the east has found the eastern burgeoning of the committee equipped to take advantage of the increased interest things Californian. Lecture dates have been arranged, and the shivering cooped up easterner will be again galed with the story of California balmy climate and diversified opportunities—all this to the benefit of state.
tortuous channel to our landing at Hamilton, and by two in the afternoon we have passed the customs officers and reached the small island that is to be our home for nearly two months.
The island was used by the British government as a powder magazine until a short time ago, and the buildings the troops occupied are still in position. It is unnecessary to describe our surroundings; we were most delightfully situated, and well provided for in every way. The laboratory was in the building used formerly as barracks for the troops, and the members of the party used the "officers' quarters" for lodgings. The houses in Bermuda are all stone, and whitewashed; the white structures, standing among the green cedars and oleanders, are parts of a scene that is not soon forgotten. I was reminded many times of pictures of islands in the south Pacific, with white buildings hidden among the trees.
Our time was largely spent in collecting, and to one who is interested in marine life, Bermuda offers exceptional opportunities for study. The costumes suitable for collecting trips were bathing suits and tennis slippers. If one cared to wear other clothing when not in the water, it was with risk of having it drenched in a rainstorm. I remember that on one occasion some of the party were wearing coats and trousers, or skirts, over the bathing suits, when a rain squall came up suddenly. The result was that the squall was "weathered" in the bathing suits, the other clothing being put into dry places. The sun came out bright after the rain, and all were soon dry.
The most interesting collecting is outside the harbor, on the coral reefs. Here the marine gardens are wonderfully beautiful with the seafans of royal purple, the seawhips and seapens, brilliantly colored sponges, living coral polyps and, above all, with the gorgeously adorned fishes. I cannot begin to give any idea of the Bermuda fishes. The specimens that one sees in museums are caricatures of the beautiful animals as we saw them about the reefs—fishes of black, orange and silver-gray, green, red and blue, dark and light blue with spots of gold. It is impossible to mention all the color combinations, or to tell of the grace of the creatures as they floated in and out of crevices in the rocks.
The opening of the winter season—the east has found the eastern burial of the committee equipped to take advantage of the increased interest things Californian. Lecture dates have been arranged, and the shivering cooped up easterner will be again galed with the story of California balmy climate and diversified opportunities—all this to the benefit of state.
"The Best You Can."
Behold the Morning doth appear Who thrills with action Mother Earth, Awakens Man, for Time is dear To stop and doze beside the hearth.
Fast go the busy changeful days And man ascends—or man may fall. Oh follow not the laggard's ways, But hearken to Ambition's call.
The earth is fair, and rich, and true, To those who work and make her so. But drones are many, workers few One reason why the harvest's low.
So try to live in might each day,
That you may have a good return And strive your best though steep the way For laws of wisdom you may learn.
Pray greet the morning with a smile, And make your purpose firm to do The best you can—make life worth while Then vict'ry's crown will garland you.

Populating Rural Districts
With idea that every citizen of California can form a committee of or for the purpose of acquainting outsiders the world over with the advantages California possesses for settlers in walks of life, The California Promotion committee has made the request that Californians, who have friends in the east or Europe, send in their dresses to the committee at its headquarters in Union Square, San Francisco, so that the committee can enter into correspondence with these people and point out to them just why California is known throughout the civilized parts of the globe as the "Land of Opportunity."
The California Promotion committee has been working on the principle that by populating the rural districts of California the whole state will be benefitted, and that the prosperity resulting from an ever increasing producing and consuming population will foster development of latent resources...
Getting Better Acquainted
A closer interdependence between all of California's fifty-eight counties, a fuller appreciation of the resources, attractions, and opportunities by the people of every part of the state, has been one of the objects constantly before the California Promotion committee in all its work for the upbuilding and development of the state. California was brought one step nearer this Utopia during the visit of the members of the Los Angeles County Weekly Press association to San Francisco and the bay region during the second week of October. The California Promotion committee arranged for the entertainment, trips being taken to Berkeley, where the visitors enjoyed a symphony concert at the Greek theatre; to Mt. Tamalpais, a view point from which the topography of the region about the bay was presented; a ride about the city in a special observation car gave the editors an opportunity to inspect the progress that has been made in rebuilding; and as a finishing touch to a trip that was thoroughly enjoyed the party visited Mare Island and Vallejo.

cleared for action and stripped down to her fighting trim. Then the fire drill sounded, and in a trice streams were pouring into the ocean on all sides.
The siren blew the signal to "close all water-tight compartments," and this occupied a remarkable short space of time. The men were put through every conceivable drill on the big ship and not in a single instance were they found wanting in precision and alacrity. The brilliant searchlight drill of the whole fleet last night, while its meaning perplexed the townspeople, was no less interesting and novel for these waters.
Six searchlights on each of the warships kept the waters of the channel in a great flood of swiftly moving lights for several hours. The drill of course was to test the signal code by search-light, and there was no cause for complaint. Yesterday's maneuvers found two of the ships, the West Virginia and the Pennsylvania; representing the nation and the other two the enemy.

The imaginary fight was designed after the fight of Commodore Perry in the War of 1812, when he had his flagship sunk. Even as Perry calmly rowed away to the Niagara, so Admiral Dayton yesterday rowed from the technically sunken flagship to the Pennsylvania, where he turned the tables on the attacking squadron and figuratively "wiped them off the map."
The evolutions of the ships have interested Santa Barbara greatly.
LOST HIS DECOY
A waiter at a recent banquet held in the North was looking so melancholy that the last of the guests, one to whom the waiter had been very attentive, could not help enquiring the reason for his sighs. "What is the matter, my man?" he asked, sympathetically. "Haven't you had enough tips tonight?" "Tips," replied the attendant, "Why, not one of them, including yourself, has given me a tip; and, what's more, some one has taken the shilling I put on the tray myself as a decoy!"
