LOCAL EVENTS W. P. Quarton was a business visitor in Los Angeles on Tuesday. John Hartung was a business visitor in Los Angeles the first of the week. L. E. Miller is engaged in taking an inventory of stock at his establishment. The Independent Fruit company has finished packing navels and is now running on Sweets and St. Michaels, having a weekly output of about five cars. Mrs. A. Bellarkle and Mrs. W. A. Lewis of San Francisco, who is visiting here, visited friends in Los Angeles this week. Tim Carroll has purchased from Weisel & Sandilands a new Maxwell touring car. The price paid is $1800. The machine is a beauty, and Tim is the happiest man at Loara. Miss Florence Bailey, teacher of languages in the high school, has resumed her duties in the classroom after an enforced absence of several weeks, due to a sprained ankle. W. C. Talcott who last year conducted a jewelry and watch-repairing establishment here died some days ago at the home of his parents at Santa Ana. News of his death was received with regret by his many friends here, where he was popular among a wide circle of friends. Gus Stern, representing Jacob Stern’s realty firm of Los Angeles, was in town this week in the interests of that firm. Gus reports many sales of Orange county property and altogether he states the future prospects of this locality are quite roseate. Tim Carroll received his touring car on Monday from Weisel & Sandilands and has since been putting it to good use. Tim bought a Maxwell, which is the winner of a long distance, non-stop run, the car having covered 3000 miles of country roads, traveling night and day until the distance was covered without once stopping the engine. Mr. Carroll's machine is surely a hummer. A. A. Mills was so unfortunate on Saturday as to have a rib broken by becoming entangled in a chain attached to his cow, which became unruly and started to run, and being violently thrown to the ground. This is Mr. Mills' second mishap in this line, having been similarly thrown several weeks ago by his horse when he suffered the fracture of a rib. Henry Rodieck of Orange, brother of Mrs. Anson of this city, died at the Santa Ana hospital on Thursday afternoon from the effects of a surgical operation for appendicitis. He was aged 17, and had been ill only ten days. Interment occurred at Orange on Sunday, services being held at the Lutheran church. A large attendance of friends was present to pay their last respects to the deceased, who in his lifetime was a popular favorite among all who knew him. Juan Morales was on Monday sentenced by Judge Howard to one year's imprisonment in the county jail. Morales was bolsterously drunk and sought to engage in a street fight with an associate. Officers Steadman and Litten had to throw him and choke him into submission. Some months ago he was fined $25 for disturbing the peace. Billings this week received a letter from his sister, who resides in North Dakota, stating that 15 feet of snow had banked itself about her home, and it was still snowing. Mr. Billings has lived here a year and two months, and has not during that time experienced a single uncomfortable day's weather. In November we had a cold snap, when the thermometer dropped to 30 for brief periods during two or three days, and the average Southern Californian imagined he was experiencing a bit of Dakota weather. However Mr. Billings considered it fine, and went around in his shirt sleeves. He has written his sister to come to this section, and she has already disposed of considerable of her property with that end in view. Under the law recently enacted whereby the county must get into when its money is deposited in a board of supervisors; C. D. Le county auditor, and J. C. While Jean De Beche was riding his wheel home on East Center street Friday afternoon he collided with Mr. Gibbs' automobile as he was driving the machine into Center street from the highway leading from the cemetery. A high cypress hedge aligns both roadways at this corner and neither was aware of the other's close proximity. Jean's bicycle was demolished and he was bruised about the face and received a three-inch gash on the leg. Both lamps on the machine were broken as a result of the collision. It has been suggested that the company go into camp in Santiago canyon during the day in memory of the occasion, with a bull's head breakfast as a feature. Officers of the company look upon the outing with favor and it is probable that the anniversary will be thusly observed.
