WASHINGTON CHAT
[CORRESPONDENCE OF THE GAZETTE]
Ever since the hundred or more dismissals of government employees from the mail-bag repair shop of the Post-office Department; and among which were several veterans of the civil war and their widows, the members of the Grand Army in Washington, as well as those in many parts of the country, have been untiring in their efforts to wrest from the President a promise that in the future there would be no discrimination against the veterans of the civil war. Such a promise has now been secured and the old soldiers everywhere will no doubt, hail the news with joy.
The full strength of the G. A. R. was brought forward in the thousands of petitions sent to the organization in Washington and the chief officers of the order journeyed to the Capital to take up the matter with the President in person. Armed with the petitions, the delegation headed by Gen. R. B. Brown, Commander-in-chief of the G. A. R., marched in a body to the White House and were cordially received by President Roosevelt. He was not only told of the many dismissals that are taking place in the departments, but he was asked to devise some plan by which aged veterans and their widows may be retained in the service of the government where not absolutely incapacitated.
The president was given to understand that the old-age reason is being over-worked in many of the departments without fairness. He was told bureau chiefs single out the old men and women for dismissal and protect younger and less efficient men and women. The president thanked the delegation for the information that had been placed before him, and said he ment of Spain in payment ippine islands. The laterants for large amounts of payment of the Panama canal from the French for $400,000 the sum of $10,000,000 for territory on each side of it cured from the Republic. All of these warrants will guarded throughout the position and will then be the money-vault in the training.

He was told bureau chiefs single out the old men and women for dismissal and protect younger and less efficient men and women. The president thanked the delegation for the information that had been placed before him, and said he would take up the matter with his cabinet. He assured his visitors that no man who ever wore the uniform of his country would be discriminated against in office, if he could prevent it.
Of the many interesting papers and documents in the archives of the treasury department, there are probably none of such historical interest as the warrants in payment of large sums of money under authority of certain acts of congress as the paper that bought Alaska. All warrants in payment of money, like checks, after being cashed come back to the maker, and in this way many such papers connected with the great affairs of this and other nations and their famous men finally become a part of the records of the treasury department.
Several of the more interesting of these warrants are being prepared for exhibition at the Jamestown exposition, some eight or ten of them to be sent down just before the opening, the officials not caring to trust such valuable papers with the ordinary exhibits.
Amohg the warrants will be one for $200,000, dated January 8, 1825, drawn in favor of Lafayette for his services in the war of the Revolution, under the act of congress approved in December, 1824. On the back of the warrant, in a fine script hand, is written the endorsement "Received payment January 11, 1825—Lafayette."
Another interesting document is the one dated August 1, 1868, for $7,200,000, in payment for Alaska. This is in favor of the minister of Russia to Washington. Next come four warrants each for $5,000,000, to the order of the French ambassador, for the govern-

Duckworth Makes Answer
The charges of intrigue to defraud her of her share of property at Loara against J. W. Duckworth by his daughter-in-law, Mary Edna Duckworth, are denied in an answer made to the young woman's complaint. The answer was filed by Attorney Melrose for J. W. Duckworth in the superior court on Friday.
Mrs. Duckworth declared in her complaint that the father had hidden from her the whereabouts of her husband, Guy L. Duckworth, and that the father had sold a store and other property with the intent to defraud her.
The answer sets up that on March 1 the father bought out his son for $5000. The answer declares that a piece of real estate claimed to have been owned by Guy Duckworth was never owned by him, though the father allowed him to build a house on it.
The sale of the Loara store to Whitaker & Co. took place April 1. Notice of a motion to dissolve an injunction restraining the sale of any of the property has been given.
