O. Horn of this city and George Schirm of Santa Ana returned this week from a tour of an inspection of the Kelso mining properties. Mr. Horn in conversation with a representative of this journal said he found the shaft to be down a depth of 120 feet and excellent progress being made. Rich ore is being taken out and indications are that a valuable mine will be opened up. He found three good ledges upon the surface and good ore in abundance. “I expected to see a mine there,” he said, “and was not disappointed. Officers of the company are showing good judgment in their prosecution of the work, and I think they will soon prove that they have a good thing in the mining venture. The ore shows rich deposits of copper, gold and silver. I brought several samples home with me and shall have them assayed. I consider the mine one of the most promising enterprises I ever saw. When the three surface ledges come together, as I believe they will, the mine will undoubtedly open up one of the biggest deposits of ore there is in the west. When water is struck the character of the ore will undoubtedly become richer, that being the usual result in mines of this kind. Already some water has been encountered, but this is being baled out easily. “Mr. Judson, a mining expert of Los Angeles, was on the ground, and informed me the prospect is one of the richest he ever inspected. He is a man of wide experience in mining and is very favorably impressed with the outlook.” The samples of ore were inspected by a number of local miners, and pronounced to be rich specimens. Mr. Nelson, president of the mining company, was present and said great development work is being done. Foundation for A. Nagel's new brick building has been in use since 1868. Mr. Nelson, president of the mining company, was present and said great development work is being prosecuted throughout the Midhills district, which is thirty miles west of Searchlight. The Bonanza King mine, three miles from his property, produced $1,200,000 of ore in eighteen months. Many other rich mines are being developed, and he is of opinion the Midhills will develop into a bigger camp than Searchlight or Goldfield. He expects to take out a party of local people this week.
