COUNTY DIVISION AGAIN
Lowering clouds seem to hover threateningly over the devoted head of the tight little county of Orange, and far-reaching efforts at its dismemberment are in the air. In our local columns will be found an interesting interview with a leading citizen of the northern portion of Orange county, who reveals for the first time a plan which is said to have been under consideration for several years past, the same being nothing short of seeking to annex the north and west sections of this county to the county of Los Angeles. The plan provides for the formation, at some time in the future, of a new county, to include the disaffected coastline communities, Los Alamitos and the entire Third supervisor district of Orange county. It is pointed out that the way has been already paved for the creation of a new county, to include this section as well as such portions of Los Angeles county as will be set apart people who will no longer be high-handed discrimination always been practiced against of the county. time in the future, or a new county, to include the disaffected coastline communities, Los Alamitos and the entire Third supervisor district of Orange county. It is pointed out that the way has been already paved for the creation of a new county, to include this section as well as such portions of Los Angeles county as will be set apart from it by the consolidation of that city and county. While consolidation is yet several years in the future, it will come inevitably, according to the judgment of men well posted upon the political history of Southern California. Included in this Los Angeles strip will be Whittier and the territory adjacent to the San Gabriel river, Long Beach and possibly San Pedro.
This is a topic of the greatest interest to the people of this entire section; indeed it is probably the most important that has challenged its interest since county division in 1889. Let the matter be discussed by our people in a manner befitting its importance.
News from Sacramento is to the effect that Stanton’s bill for annexing the coast strip to Los Angeles may pass. The author of the bill is quoted as saying that if Huntington Beach retains its present attitude regarding division he will carry the bill. How the beach people regard the measure is best illustrated by the following excerpt from the Huntington Beach News of last Friday:
CUTTING OFF THEIR NOSE
Unless there is an immediate change of front on the part of Santa Ana regarding Huntington Beach, that city will soon find itself in the position of the gentleman who once cut off his nose to spite his face. Just why those old fogies over there should have conceived the idea that there is any good to be derived from ignoring this portion of the county in the matter of pub-

There are good Santa Ana, big-hearted minded gentlemen with a pleasure to deal; but the politician predominates who is eternally seeking office, lying about his taking from them what belongs to them. CUTTING OFF THEIR NOSE
Unless there is an immediate change of front on the part of Santa Ana regarding Huntington Beach, that city will soon find itself in the position of the gentleman who once cut off his nose to spite his face. Just why those old fogies over there should have conceived the idea that there is any good to be derived from ignoring this portion of the county in the matter of public improvements is indeed a mystery, unless it be that their alleged intellects have become so overgrown with moss as to be useless for anything more strenuous than knocking.
Be that as it may, there seems to be no one in this section so thoroughly in love with Orange county under present conditions as to be averse to making a change in the appearance of the map as it affects this particular section of the universe, by joining with Los Angeles county, and in all probability that is just what will be done in course of time. This community has it within its power to demand and secure relief, and there can be no mistaking the temper of our people. It is a shame that such a course should be necessary, but since the people of Santa Ana, who control the political situation of the county, have repeatedly demonstrated the fact that they are wholly unable to overcome their feelings of jealous hatred for this section of the county, it is well that the property owners of Huntington Beach have at last taken the matter into their own hands.
No sooner had the news leaked out that there was a bill before the legislature to annex Huntington Beach to Los Angeles county than a committee representing the chamber of commerce and the merchants' and manufacturers' association of Santa Ana stamped across lots to inquire if we were really and truly in earnest. And that is just exactly what they discovered—a community of enterprising and prosperous
who will no longer tolerate the undeclared discrimination which has been practiced against this end county. If Santa Ana would goose that lays the golden line, at least, have nothing to lose supplying the ax. Hunting-tech asks no favors, but it does its rights.
ings have been held at Ington Beach at which reso were adopted pledging sup the Stanton bill. The au the bill has come south to conferences with the citizens beach town, and a meeting in Angeles civic bodies was as a result thereof with a rescinding action taken last when resolutions in opposition to the transfer of the beach Los Angeles were adopted. latter is as we write on Tuesday under advisement by the Angeles civic bodies.
and above all this, is the table fact that throughout section of Orange county there an undercurrent of strong favorable to returning to Angeles county. Distrust of Ana, coupled with base impon the part of that city to his section, is given as the for the movement. Have he to the parting of the ways? A project has proceeded so far promises are said to have made to exempt this section the bond issues incident to rivers river aqueduct. In words, the admission of this county territory was to
The thanks of the people of this city are due Andrew Carnegie, the Pittsburg philanthropist, for his munificent donation of $10,000 for the erection of a public library. The text of the final communication from Mr. Carnegie’s secretary upon the subject, as well as the resolution adopted by the city trustees to conform to the philanthropist’s conditions, will be found in another column of this issue. Mr. Carnegie states he will be glad to provide $10,000 for a public library here if the city will provide a suitable site and obligate itself to expend $1000 a year for maintaining the library. This the city trustees have by resolution agreed to do. While the thanks of the community are due Mr. Carnegie, the chamber of commerce of this city, through whose efforts the splendid benefaction was brought about, should also come in for sincere congratulation.
Mr. Carnegie has given from his ample fortune millions in endowment of worthy institutions throughout the world, and none have been more greatly appreciated than his benefaction for the establishment of free public libraries. Work upon the new building will probably be in progress in the near future, and soon the city will be adorned by one of the handsomest library buildings in the county.
A Bakersfield senator returning
A Bakersfield senator returning home from Sacramento early the other morning discovered the sanctity of his home had been invaded by a Santa Barbara senator, who had spent the night in his wife's apartments. Divorce proceedings ensued. An Alameda senator was some time ago shot and dangerously wounded by a girl he had wronged. He subsequently married her. Meanwhile we are rejoiced to know that Senator Anderson remains pure in heart and whiter than the driven snow.
The Santa Ana hog must not be confounded with the Santa Ana blind pig.
Police statistics show that there are six bachelors arrested to one married man. Even the policemen seem to sympathize with the married man.
Serves the president right. Mr. Hanks told him he was not an expert on anything but golf and high-balls.
The English people are calling attention to the existence of the House of Lords by threatening to abolish it.
It becomes an interesting question as to how many more millions Mr. Rockefeller will have to slough off before he will go through the eye of a needle.
When Governor Hughes recommends insurance legislation, even his have been more greatly appreciated than his benefaction for the establishment of free public libraries. Work upon the new building will probably be in progress in the near future, and soon the city will be adorned by one of the handsomest library buildings in the county.

Santa Ana restore to this city which she stole from us? By the eternal God above shall join forces with these so even now are blazoning the way to the ancestral whence this valley was to stray away, many years ago.
For Anderson made another run in the upper house of the Senate at Sacramento a few days when he rose to a questionable privilege and election solons with a rare exhibition of his asinine stupidity. He had been quoted in an article paper with the assertion serious lady attaches of the house were members of the conde, and that several sentere no better than they would be. Lifting his voice imply and sweeping the chambers a majestic gesture of his said:
President, I made that intent to the reporter in strict face, and it was not intendpublication!"
Though the situation was most hideous, Anderson's charge, it is still made the basis of legal investigation.
It becomes an interesting question as to how many more millions Mr. Rockefeller will have to slough off before he will go through the eye of a needle.
When Governor Hughes recommends insurance legislation, even his enemies cannot accuse him of talking of something he known nothing about.
Word comes from across the raging Santa Ana river that word has been received from Riverside to the effect that a movement appears to the naked eye to be on foot in that classic town to begin suit against Orange county to compel its board of supervisors to build a road up Decker canyon to meet the road built into the mountains to the county line west of Elsinore. The Riverside and Elsinore people declare that a former board of supervisors of Orange county agreed to join with Riverside in building a road over the pass above San Juan hot springs. It is claimed also that Riverside has performed its part of the agreement in building to the county line. Residents in the southern ends of Riverside and Orange counties have long demanded that the road be built, there being no wagon road over the Santa Ana range.
