Northern and Southern California
A CONTRAST
To treat the contrast climatically the North in my opinion has the advantage. I am not referring to San Francisco, but to the cities round the bay—Oakland, Berkeley, Fruitvale, Alameda. The climate in these cities, both summer and winter, is ideal; never too cold and never disagreeably hot. The air is bracing and makes one feel like doing something. Los Angeles, on the other hand, is enervating more or less, and induces a lethargic feeling—you want to go to bed, or sit under a tree in the park. Again we have nothing here that corresponds to your "Santa Ana." Everything considered, if looking for "climate" I would locate in the northern portion of the state. Joaquin Miller, who lives on the hills back of Fruitvale, says, "I have been everywhere, but for climate give me Fruitvale." Fruitvale I may say, in passing, is a continuation of, or a suburb of Oakland. In the South the rains cannot be depended on; here, we always get enough. It rained enough two months ago to bring up the grass, and enough ever since to keep it growing. In all this I am not saying that Los Angeles, Anaheim and Santa Ana have not beautiful climates, and are ideal residence towns. But I do say that the elties of the bay have an equally good climate, plus the vim and vigor that the air seems to give one.
Gazette still keeps at the size. May I never smoke cigar if it isn't the cleanest most sensible and most reliable per in California.
Short Courses in Agriculture
This year these special courses will be given by the city of California at four points: accommodate agriculturalists; interested in agriculture section of the state, who on account of long distances to travel can drawn together at any one place.
These courses are designed to meet the needs of all persons who make themselves more familiar with the principles underlying farming operations and with the most practical practices. We will endeavor them in every way thoroughly cal.
The short course is open to sons of good moral character who had sufficient school training to them to intelligently understand their duties, take notes, and perform necessary text-book work. The best previous education of the students greater will be the benefit from the instruction given.
No charge whatever will be tuition, but to enable us to proper preparation for those sire to come and to avoid the crowding of the class room, allants will be required to procure admission. Prospective are therefore requested to make applications at the earliest date so that we can make ample paration for their accommodation.

we always get enough.
And now as to scenery. Your scenery lies in mountains far away and snow capped at seasons of the year—for the rest you are all a plain—a great far spreading plain. Here our scenery is "close," the Alameda and the Berkeley hills, the bay of San Francisco and the Golden Gate. One never tires looking at them, and when he tires looking at them he can climb them, and the climb is a splendid investment. In half an hour you come to a canyon 1000 feet in depth, and yonder half way up the hill is a cross of eucalyptus trees planted by Joaquin Miller ten years ago. They are nearly 20 feet high and form a landmark visible in all the valley. For scenery the North beats the South by far.
Socially, taking the people of Northern and Southern California, I would rather have the people of the South. Its all the dollar here, and many of the natives don't care much how they get them. The mayor and political boss of Frisco set the pace, and we little "grafters" follow in their lead. A real estate agent sold a house for me in about three minutes; his commission was an even $100. And so it is all down the line. The dollar is almighty, and its a sin against Almighty God the way we often get it. Yes, the people in the South are not half so sordid and their other characteristics will compare with the people here, and come out ahead—ahead every time.
How about the cost of living? Well I pay $250 a month for a quart of watered milk delivered daily, and tuition, but to enable us to proper preparation for those who desire to come and to avoid the crowding of the class room, allants will be required to procure admission. Prospective students are therefore requested to make applications at the earliest date so that we can make ample paration for their accommodation.
Students' tickets will be granted those intending to take the course. Should the applicants fail tickets exceed the available class space preference will be given or prospective growers or teachers.
Auditor's tickets will be issued single lectures in case there is available after the applicants for students' tickets are accommodated. Where there is special demand lecture it will usually be possible cure a large room and accommodate some of these tickets will be availed for all lectures not requiring an amount of room for demonstration.
This will be true of all events.
Application for admission course in poultry and nutrition be sent to Professor M. E. Jaffa, Calley, Cal.
Application for admission course in horticulture and entomology should be sent to Professor C. W. Worth to the following addresses:
Fresno course—Care of Professors C. Olney, Fresno high school.
Los Angeles course—Care of Professor E. B. Babcock, state normal Los Angeles, Cal.
Sacramento course—Care of Miller, secretary of the Sacramento Valley Development association.
Berkeley course—Berkeley, Cal.
As requests for tickets they were acted on in the order in which they received and tickets issued in the applicant. These will be delivered to you upon your arrival place of meeting. If for any reason there is a doubt in regard to suance of a ticket you will be notified at once.
A written examination will be held at the close of each course for who desire.
Students successfully passing theamination after completing the course given in either of these courses, desire to continue their residency the university, will be admitted.

Well I pay $250 a month for a quart of watered milk delivered daily, and other things are in proportion. The earthquake sent prices skyward and they haven't come down yet. Before the quake you could have bought a fine suit of clothes for $15; now you pay $20.00. Its the same with everything. Rents go up; the labor demands a raise or strikes. It gets the raise and then the week after provisions and clothes and meat all get a "raise" too. Labor is in demand, a man need never be idle here, and $2 a day is the lowest. It will take ten years to rebuild San Francisco and until it is rebuilt labor, skilled and unskilled, will be in great demand—although at present we have about 1000 more carpenters, or men who call themselves carpenters, than we need.
San Francisco's calamity meant all the world to Oakland. It has doubled in population, built factories and residences at an enormous rate, and it still keeps at it.
A year ago the Oakland Tribune was a six day two or three sheet affair; today it equals the Los Angeles Times in size and prints a Sunday edition with a newspaper supplement, and the other papers have grown in proportion. The Anaheim
still keeps at the same day I never smoke another cigarette isn't the cleanest and the easiest and most reliable path to California. RAMBLER.
Courses in Agriculture
For these special courses of interest will be given by the University at four points so as to educate agriculturalists and others in agriculture in every state, who on account of restrictions to travel cannot be other at any one place.
Courses are designed to meet all persons who desire to possess more familiar with the underlying farming operations with the most approved methods. We will endeavor to make every way thoroughly practiced.
The course is open to all perennial moral character who have spent school training to enable intelligently understand lectures, and perform the necessary book work. The better the education of the student the better the benefit derived from instruction given.

NEED VINOL
for it hastens recovery by creating strength
There is just one thing the matter with a person who has been sick—that is, weakness.
To all such people in this vicinity we recommend our delicious cod liver preparation, Vinol, as the very best strength creator for convalescents.
Vinol strengthens the digestive organs, creates an appetite, promotes sound sleep, makes rich, red blood, and builds up a depleted sytem to health and vigor.
This is because Vinol contains all the medicinal elements of cod liver oil with the useless oil eliminated and tonic iron added. We guarantee it.
