H. Means of the United States irrigation department, with chemists of the state university, conducting a series of experiments on chemistry building of the University of California. This collaborative work in which the United States government and the State of California are equally interested is a economic study of the waters of the state and is connected withclamation work of the general department. Four chemists mentioned are Eaton, J. A. Pierce, P. L. McCoy and M. Vagouny. Professor Eaton, who started the work, has given it up and now the experts are under the direction of Heileman. Systematic method for a contesting of the California river has been worked out. It was the first of 1906 and will confluence the year. Every small bottle of water is taken from Feather, Yuba, Sacramento San, Mokelumne, San Joaquin, Haus, Merced, Kern, San Luis Santa Ana, Santa Ynez, Malibu Arroyo Seco (tributary of Salida to advance. Apricots are bringing $30 a ton for canning without grading. Last year $20 a ton was price for best grades. No price yet quoted by Canners association for peaches. Buyers are out offering 10c for dried apricots to growers. The new crop will come to a bare market. The northern crop will be very light. Southern California will have, it is estimated, about 70 carloads instead of 300, the normal yield. In view of this shortage, early quotation have been withdrawn; and nothing is doing in futures at present. Peach crop promises a fair sized yield. Quotations have been sent out on bag basis from 7¾ for standards to 9¼ fancy. It is believed these prices will advance. There is not much interest shown in raisin market. About 125 carloads remain in the state which will be thoroughly cleaned up before new crop comes in. No reliable estimate of size of new crop can be made before middle of present month. The opening prices for seeded varieties have been placed at 5¾ and 6c as against 8 to 8½c for season of 1905. There is shortage in stock of canned goods caused by loss in San Francisco fire of more than 300,000 cases in warehouses and factories. The new pack will not be ready before the first of September. Inquiries for futures show expectation of strong market, but packers are not ready to quote prices. San Francisco packed a large proportion of the cheaper grades of fruit and vegetables and its packing facilities are curtailed about two-thirds for this season. Owing to loss of millions of gallons of wine in San Francisco, red wine has advanced 10c per gallon and white wine 15c. Sweet wine shows advances of 5c to 8c. The orange market is in fine shape, B.
