LOCAL EVENTS Mr. and Mrs. Spake and daughter drove to Huntington Beach on Tuesday for a day's outing. Mrs. M. L. Goble left for Long Beach on Tuesday for a week's visit, accompanied by her son and daughter. Miss Tillie Schwentker is home from New Mexico after an extended absence. Mrs. George C. Hagar and family have been spending the week at Newport Beach. Mr. and Mrs. George Boyd visited with relatives in Los Angeles over Sunday. Fritz Yungbluth was a business visitor in Los Angeles the first of the week. Miss Zoila Smythe and Mrs. Stewart spent Sunday with relatives and friends in Los Angeles. Louis Denni left on Monday for a trip to his old home in Switzerland. He will be absent about six months. W. Frantz went to Los Angeles on Monday to pick out tiling for the entrance of the new Hussman barber shop. Dr. Flood is confined to his residence on Los Angeles street with an attack of scarlet fever. Dr. Syer is in charge of the case. The patient's condition was yesterday reported to be somewhat improved. E. W. McCollum has again heard from his wife, who is at Monroe, Wis., at the bedside of her mother, whose condition is critical. He is now at his home resting easily and will probably soon be able to be out again. Herman Stern and Miss Marie Nicolas were married at the residence of George E. Peters at Santa Ana on Monday afternoon. Rev. Father Dubbel was the officiating clergyman. P. Nicolas, father of the bride, and Miss Pauline Nemetz attended the couple. At conclusion of the ceremony the newly married couple took the train for Santa Barbara, where a brief honeymoon will be passed. They will return the latter part of the week, when a reception will be held at the residence of the bride's father in Fullerton. We join the friends of the happy couple in extending felicitations. Frank Dyer distinguished himself at the Landing Sunday by swimming to the assistance of Fred Conrad who asked assistance while attempting to swim the channel. The latter would probably have been drowned had he not been taken ashore. Accompanied by Fred Schneider the two set out to swim across the channel. When half way across Conrad gave out and Schneider went to his assistance. Dyer was called for, he being an experienced swimmer, and after Schneider disengaged himself from Conrad's hold, he brought the latter safely to the beach. Later in the day Dyer again distinguished himself by saving a man and boy who were in imminent peril of drowning by swimming to their assistance and bringing them ashore. The youth clung to his father's neck third year. Fred holds a responsible position with one of the largest mercantile houses in the territory, and is home for a vacation after two years of active service for his employers. He reports eastern capital seeking investment in the territory and predicts for it a great future, being of opinion that its mineral richness bids fair soon to receive greater exploitation than ever before. He has been before the people before and has always given a good account of his stewardship. He has been persuaded to become a candidate for assessor by his many friends throughout the county and if placed upon the ticket his name will impart to it a strength and grace which will be worth many votes on election day. Clyde Bishop, the eloquent young Santa Ana orator, is a candidate for the assembly. Mr. Bishop is not only an orator—he is a level-headed and observant man of affairs, and would reflect credit upon Orange county at Sacramento. Those who heard his decoration day address to the veterans here a year ago recall it as one of the finest oratorical efforts ever heard in this county. Bishop has a very bright future before him, and we doubt not will in time come to be known as one of the county's greatest public speakers. He shouldered a gun at his country's call during the war with Spain, and that is which stands to his credit as one of his country’s defenders. More men like Bishop and less of the kind who assail him are what the country needs. Charles Barnett, on trial in the superior court this week charged with burglarizing the Guggenheim packing-house, March 4, was found guilty in the first degree. The jury was out only a few minutes. A sensational ending came when the defendant was put on the stand and swore he had never committed a felony or been arrested before. His photograph and evidence were produced to show that he had served a two-years sentence in jail ten years ago. Commencing June 17th, the Santa Fe will make several important changes in its time tables. Train no. 78 will leave Anaheim at 7:35 a.m. instead of 7:55 a.m., 20 minutes earlier. No. 73 leaves Anaheim at 2:50 p.m. instead of 2:35 p.m. No. 74 at 12 o'clock noon instead of 12:19 p.m. A new train will be put on between Orange and San Bernardino connecting with this train from Anaheim at 8:50 a.m. Connection for all points between Los Angeles and San Bernardino will now be made by train no. 78 leaving Anaheim at 7:35 a.m. Other changes of minor importance will also be made in the new schedule. Tax Collector Robinson has learned that a considerable portion of his work connected with the delinquent tax list must be done over again, and also that taxes will not be delinquent until July 10. This information is sent him by State Controller E. P. Colgan, under date of June 9. Mr. Colgan calls attention to his previous instructions relative to the publication of the delinquent tax list, and says that on June 5, 1906, the state legislators passed a law extending the time for the performance of acts and proceedings to July 10. Under the old law, taxes became delinquent on the last Monday in April, but owing to the succession of holidays the time was extended into June.
