Develop and Extend the Industry
The Bureau of Forestry has been studying the maple sugar industry with the view of securing a use of the maple forests. Since the area of maple sugar farm greatly changed and shrub early days maple sugar was commonly made, even in many parts south, because cane sugar was allly unobtainable. No longer there even a limited product South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama Mississippi, Louisiana and Arizona. This is because cane sugar can be bought everywhere at price, and is preferred to mahogany for sweetening. In Michigan and Illinois the trees have been extensively lumber, thus reducing the quantity for tree tapping. States also the markets are with imitations, which remove incentive to extending the in other states as in western land, West Virginia, Ohio, New and in New England the mahogany industry has held its own increased.

PRODUCTION OF MAPLE SUGAR
Of Forestry Seeks to Develop and Extend the Industry
Theau of Forestry has been the maple sugar industry view of securing a larger maple forests. Since 1850, maple sugar farming has changed and shrunk. In maple sugar was common even in many parts of theouse cane sugar was virtu-tainable. No longer is it a limited production in Colina, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana and Arkansas. Ause cane sugar can now everywhere at a low price preferred to maple sug-weetening. In Indiana, and Illinois the maple has been extensively cut for us reducing the oppoortu-tree tapping. In those markets are glutted editions, which removes the need extending the industry. States as in western Mary-Virginia, Ohio, New York, New England the maple sugery has held its own or been
The old method of collecting the sap by making a diagonal cut in the tree was abandoned long ago because it injured the tree so that it could be worked for but a few years. The approved practice now is to bore a hole one inch deep and three-eighths of an inch in diameter into the sunny side of trees over 12 inches in diameter, and to make but one hole in each tree, except possibly where the trees are especially large and productive. Vast improvements have also been made in appliances for handling the sap and boiling it down to sugar and sirup.
Maple trees now furnish but a small per cent of the commercial maple sirup and sugar. While the demand for both these commodities has constantly increased the output from maple trees has decreased during the last twenty years. The trade has been supplied only by radically adulterating the pure goods, or by manufacturing a product entirely from foreign materials. It is conservatively estimated that seven-eighths of what is sold as maple sirup and sugar is a spurious article. Most of the fabrications are entirely harmless, but they are not the real thing. Those fortunate enough to have eaten the genuine article will always demand it, and conditions should be such that they may get it, if they are willing to pay the price.

How Farmers Built Railroad
In a recent number of World's Work appeared an interesting article giving an account of how the farmers of Ramsey county, North Dakota, built a railroad without the aid of outside or borrowed capital. These farmers hauled their grain—often a distance of twenty-five miles—to Devil’s Lake, the county seat, through which the Great Northern railway passed. It kept the farmers hauling grain all winter. They asked James J. Hill, president of the Great Northern railway, to build a branch line from Devil’s Lake up through their section. Mr. Hill said he could not build. Six of the largest farmers met at a school house. One of them was Joseph Kelley, who owned 900 acres of land, and who hauled his wheat fifteen miles to Devil’s Lake. Mr. Kelley said, “If the Great Northern won't build, we will build.” And the farmers built a railroad twenty-five miles long.
They asked every farmer who hauled grain to Devil’s Lake to subscribe. Some subscribed $25, others $500. They raised $50,000. They sent a farmer to Duluth to buy ties, another to St. Paul to buy old rails. A land promoter was building a small branch line out of Devil’s Lake to the south and they got him to survey the road. They hired section hands to lay the track. But they needed more money. They bought land along the line and laid out three towns, sold the lots and used the money to buy an old en-
gine, a day coach, and for from the Great Northern.
Then the road was started stop for any farmer at Last year the road made ses; it hauled 60,000 wheat. This year with the at hand the farmers plowed wheat and the road will 000 bushels.

The farmer makes mistakes through want edge of his trade. We tradesman to know as he vocation as the farmer does could command no salary of the laborer. As a mat the farmer has a large amount his business. Indeed, country or city merchandise his business in the slip she that the farmer does he be doing business long.
The average farmer is 160 acres. In the west he lands into wheat. He figure the cost of keeping buying and paying for me the seed, the plowing, and investing. He does not see he is getting perhaps per acre, which at 70 cents will bring him $7 per the entire product has labor, machinery, seed, in the neighborhood of $
He scarcely ever stops that his land is his capital that it should be made best results. He does stand that onions yield 1000 bushels per acre end $1 50 per bushel can be considered, yet one acre will yield him more than crop of grain. He does stand why spring chickens hatched by incubation
BILIOUSNESS AND CONSTIPATION CURED BY THEDFORDS BLACK-DRAUGHT
Because the liver is neglected people suffer with constipation, biliousness, headaches and fevers. Colds attack the lungs and contagious diseases take hold of the system. It is safe to say that if the liver were always kept in proper working order, illness would be almost unknown.
Thedford's Black-Draught is so successful in curing such sickness because it is without a rival as a liver regulator. This great family medicine is not a strong and drastic drug, but a mild and healthful laxative that cures constipation and may be taken by a mere child without possible harm.
The healthful action on the liver cures biliousness. It has an invigorating effect on the kidneys. Because the liver and kidneys do not work regularly, the poisonous acids along with the waste from the bowels get back into the blood and virulent contagion results.
Timely treatment with Thedford's Black-Draught removes the dangers which lurk in constipation, liver and kidney troubles, and will positively forestall the inroads of Bright's disease, for which disease in advanced stages there is no cure. Ask your dealer for a 25c. package of Thedford's Black-Draught.

Mistakes of the Farmer
A farmer makes irretrievable
ties through want of knowlof his trade. Were the city
man to know as little of his
own as the farmer does of his he
command no salary above that
laborer. As a matter of fact
farmer has a large allowance to
credit by the immense profit in
business. Indeed, should the
city or city merchant conduct
business in the slip shod manner
the farmer does he would not
long business long.
Average farmer is cultivating

getting perhaps ten bushels

tire product has cost him in
machinery, seed, horses, etc.,
neighborhood of $6 per acre.
Recarcely ever stops to think
his land is his capital stock and
should be made to bring the
results. He does not understand that onions yielding 700 to
bushels per acre end selling for
per bushel can be given contion, yet one acre of such crops
held him more than his whole
of grain. He does not understand why spring chickens and
hatched by incubators on an
amount of $100 will bring him
3 and 4 per cent and gives the borrower forty-two years in which to
pay the loan. The total cost of this
house must not exceed $800 and the

Shortage in Prune Crop
A. D. Porter of J. K. Armsby &
Co., A. Rosenberg of Rosenberg &
Co. and Mr. Blum, the packer of
Vacaville, say that the prune crop
of California this year, in all the
principal districts, will range only
one-quarter to one-half of the California seasonal output.
Various theories are given to supply an explanation for the phenomenon. One is that rains kept the
flowers back and prevented perfect
pollinization, and the fruit therefore fell prematurely. Another theoory is that insects have caused the
damage. Small fruit that represented millions of pounds of mature
prunes has fallen in a week. The
loss cannot yet well be estimated.

One night recently a bullet from a 22 calibre rifle crashed through a large window in the parlor of County Assessor Vegeley's home at Santa Ana. Fortunately there was no one in the room at the time and the only damage done by the bullet was the breaking of the glass. Can it be possible that the terrorists are after Frank?

Drying preparations simply develop dry catarrh; they dry up the secretions, which adhere to the membrane and decompose, causing a far more serious trouble than the ordinary form of catarrh. Avoid all drying inhalants, fumes, smokes and snuffs and use that which cleanses, soothes and heals. Ely's Cream Balm is such a remedy and will cure catarrh or cold in the head easily and pleasantly. A trial size will be mailed for 10 cents. All druggists sell the 50c. size. Ely Brothers, 56 Warren St., N.Y.
The Balm cures without pain, does not irritate or cause sneezing. It spreads itself over an irritated and angry surface, relieving immediately the painful inflammation.
With Ely's Cream Balm you are armed against Nasal Catarrh and Hay Fever.
