Sherman died at her home on the Garden Grove road on Friday morning from the effects of a dose of morphine taken with suicidal intent. Mrs. Sherman was discovered in the loft of the barn at her home on Thursday evening after a search for her lasting all that day and previous night. A doctor was summoned at once, but of no avail. She wandered away on Wednesday afternoon while suffering from mental abberation and was not found until next day. She had been subject to melancholia since the death of her husband a year ago. Not long ago she attempted to take her life by poisoning. On Wednesday last she came to town accompanied by her daughter. While the latter was in a store she drove off. Later the horse and buggy were found north of this city. There was no trace however of the unfortunate woman. Diligent search was kept up for her through the night, without avail. As stated, at noon next day she was found in the barn loft. Without doubt she had only been there a short time and had evidently spent the entire night out. Deceased was 55 years of age and left a family of children. The funeral occurred on Saturday afternoon. When Will the Land Frauds Be Stopped? The biggest of the land frauds, involving the highest public officials in some of the western states, and untold acreages of land would form after all but a passing nine days' wonder with the busy populace were it not for the fact that their ramifications are so extensive that as fast as one set of men is indicted the investigations of the government bring forth another brood of frauds. The government land frauds of the west is a question, however, of far deeper significance than the mere matter of the illegal acquisition during the past few years of some public lands or timber by private individuals, corporations or government officials. The question is, will the present prosecutions affect the system. Not one iota. The cases being pushed are those in which the government sleuths think there is a possibility of obtaining conviction. The great mass and majority of equally great frauds will never be heard from outside of their immediate localities. The reason for this is that such frauds have been legal—frauds committed entirely within the law. But how can a land fraud be legal? An instance: The legislature of Georgia granted some three million acres of land to certain syndicates. The grant became a law. Subsequently it was discovered that all the members of the legislature who voted for the grant were members of the various syndicates which secured the land; but the title nevertheless was declared good. This was legalized fraud. So in the west. The timber and stone law, the desert land law and the commutation clause of the homestead law, are in themselves and the regulations under which they are administered, fraud laws and while their letter may be observed their spirit can be violated and the men who re- been acting in this manner in the interests of the farmers and they maintain they are entirely without while the reduced rates with the railroads enableors to do the work otherwise. In fact the specifications particularly to the reduced train rates in order that the may get the benefit of bids. The matter is too to the attorney-general. It is to be hoped that railroad rates can be allowed by the interior which now has under prince which will cost some 30 m dollars and the irrigation seethat by securing these which the railroods are grant, there will be a save construction cost of a million within the next seven year. The press dispatches have the significant fact that question of the government this money. They have fact that it is a governmen and Comptroller Traceweed the subject with the idea that the government is save for itself a little million dollars can be saved railroad concessions, it will rect saving of that amount farmers and settlers who homes or have already homes on the irrigated who under the irrigation pay back to the gover cost of the construction works. The app for the government irrigation is in the nature of a low farmers to be paid back of ten years, the govern same time improving it and making it habitable ductive. For this reason cause there is no question secured the land; but the title nevertheless was declared good. This was legalized fraud. So in the west. The timber and stone law, the desert land law and the commutation clause of the homestead law, are in themselves and the regulations under which they are administered, fraud laws and while their letter may be observed their spirit can be violated and the men who receive government patents under them, in the great majority of cases, have no right in equity to the land. The laws themselves must be revised if honesty is to be expected in land matters. CLEANING OUT THE AUGEAN STABLES. The present activities of the secretary of the interior in cleaning out the Oregon land frauds recalls a little incident which occurred some twenty years ago when Mayor Henry of Oakland, Cal., was inducted into office. There had been much rottenness in the municipal administration and a spasm of disgust sweeping over the town, Henry was elected on a ticket pledged to reform. The memory of the mayor-elect on questions of mythology and early history was a bit rusty and Bryant's stately tread in Thanatopsis—"Lose thyself in the continuous woods where rolls the Oregon and hear no sound save his own dashings" evidently became confused in his mind with one of the great labors of Hercules, for in his inaugural address, farmers to be paid back of ten years, the governmen same time improving it and making it habitable ductive. For this reason cause there is no question coasting the outgoing administration to a turn, he promised a order of things and told the what he proposed, in a word, to out the Oregon stables. DOSHIP ON IRRIGATORS Senior Department Anxious at Reduce Cost of Dam Construction [SPONDENCE OF THE GAZETTE] Washington, D. C., April 23.—Theyon searchers have endeavored a venal phase on the action secretary of the interior and director of the geological survey during special railroad rates for material used in the construction government irrigation works west. Controller Tracewell of the city department holds that the action is in opposition to the state commerce act, in that it is the rebate clause. Secretary Mitchcock and Director Walz of the geological survey have acting in this matter entirely interests of the irrigation and they maintain with that are entirely within the law the reduced rates arranged the railroads enables contract do the work cheaper than raise. In fact the government organizations particularly call attention the reduced transportation order that the government titive rates which injure anyone, it is to be hoped that a way will be found out of the difficulty discovered by Comptroller Tracewell. Timber Land Scrippers Foiled The absolute repeal of the forest reserve lieu selection law in the closing days of the last session of congress dropped like a bomb into the camp of the speculators in western timber lands, leaving them, by a stroke of the pen, practically out of a job. The repeal completely kills what is known as the "scrip" business and leaves out in the cold a large number of speculators with these forest reserve selection rights, or as it is commonly termed, scrip, worthless upon their hands. Many others who have been buying up cheap and worthless lands in what they believed would soon be included in forest reserves, with the purpose of ex-changing these lands for valuable government timber lands, have found themselves badly scooped. The somewhat amusing feature of the situation lay in the fact that one-half of the scrippers did not know what had happened. The law was repealed by an act entitled "an act to prohibit the selection of timber lands in lieu of lands in forest reserves." This bill passed the house last year and coming over to the senate was amended in committee by Senator Hansbrough and variously chopped to pieces and added to until finally an amendment offered by Senator Nelson was adopted simply cutting off the dog's tail immediately. Extinct California Plants Prof. Willis L. Jepson of the Botanical department of the university of California, who has been granted a year's leave of absence by the board of regents, will spend the whole of the time in travel abroad in Europe and the tropics gathering material for the botanical museum at Berkeley. The most interesting feature of his visit in the British Isles will be the gathering of California plants, which are now extinct here. In the early days of European occupation of this continent, explorers collected rare specimens of plants now out of existence here. These are now to be found in the museums of London and Dublin and at the Kew gardens, where specimens will be secured by Prof. Jepson. A new experiment in the industrial management of convicts is to be tried in Massachusetts. Instead of employing them in manufacturing goods it is proposed to set the convicts to reclaiming waste land. Home Made Have your cake, muffins, and tea biscuit home-made.
