Land has been sold in Orange lately at prices ranging from $125 to $150 per acre. Quite a pleasant party gathered in Santiago cafion yesterday. Everything passed off agreeably. Several teams passed through town yesterday on the way to Lower California. The jewels for the Santa Ana lodge of F. & A. M. arrived by express on Saturday. The case of Beauchamp vs. Morrillo is now being tried before Judge Clark and a jury. Joseph B. Braman, of Los Angeles, has been commissioned by the Governor of Massachusetts a Commissioner of Deeds for that Commonwealth. John A. Don Vicente Elisalde, of Florence, is in town hunting for a horse which, with saddle and bridle, was stolen from his place on the night of the 24th. The thief also took sundry articles from the house. We learn that Ned Polhemus, who is Superintendent of a mine at Seattle, W.T. will shake off the coils of bachelordom on the 4th of November, and lead to the altar a beautiful and estimable young lady, the belle of the territory. The painting, taken from a photograph of Toby Roserthal's "Elaine," by Ignacio Covarrubias is now on exhibition at Messra. Clark & Co.'s bookstore. It will well repay a visit. The painting will be disposed of by rattle, and the fortunate winner will have a work of art which will be a pleasant ornament to any parlor. A German Lodge of the I. O. Davis will leave Boston on November 1st for Anahiem. He will bring his family and settle on the Fields' place, which he intends to turn into a fine stock farm. Eighteen teams are employed in hauling rock and lumber for the bridge now being built across the Santa Ana river. During the past week nearly forty men were employed. The lumber for the Cajon water ditch will all be delivered by the first day of December. It will come from Santa Cruz, and will be delivered at the Wilmington wharf. We had a call yesterday from Mr. David Leaby, the "Water-Witch," who is now sinking wells in Orange. By the aid of a peach-tree limb he is able to tell exactly where to sink a well, and can determine the distance to water. In course of time he will receive a full set of artesian well tools, from the East. The Grange committee viewed several points near the depot on Saturday, for the location of their new store building. Their decision has not been rendered, and will be governed by the feasibility of constructing a switch from the S. P. R. R. The committee are now in correspondence with F. E. Hewitt, Superintendent of the road. Rev. Gustav Borchard writes as follows to the Star, from San Francisco, under date of October 21st: "On account of my falling health, I had to return from Japan to America. As I was sent a year ago to Los Angeles and Anahiem, in order to work among the Germans there, I take a great interest in their spiritual welfare, and you will oblige me very much if you will give notice in your paper that in case the Germans in your city, or in Anahiem, or in both places, will organize Evangelical Lutheran churches I will contribute one hundred dollars —The painting, taken from a photograph of Toby Roserthal's "Elaine," by Ignacio Covarrubias is now on exhibition at Messra. F., will be instituted in Anahiem on Saturday, by the Grand Master and Grand Secretary of the Order, who will arrive from San Francisco in a day or two. All brethren in good standing are invited to be present at the institution of the lodge. We understand that arrangements are being made for the instituting of an encampment. From Wednesday's Daily, Mr. Wm. R. Olden has been appointed commissioner for the Centennial. Mr. A. C. Chambers, a carpenter, has rented the house of Mrs. Alice Chase. All the smokers buy the Wm. C. Ralston cigars just received at Polhemus'. They are something extra. An advertisement in our columns to-day calls for a girl to do general housework. This is a fine opportunity to procure a good home. Mr. A. Hill has been quite ill, but his physician reports to-day that his condition is better. We hope soon to see him at the forge again. Horse borrowing is getting a little too popular in this vicinity. Especially where they borrow in the night and forget to return. One went from Santa Ana two nights ago. At the meeting of Anahiem Lodge of I. O. O. F., held last night the following officers were elected: T. Shelly, V. G.; J. J. Hill, R. S.; J. H. Gooch, P. S.; P. O. McKinnie, Treasurer. Capt. Geo. B. Walker has returned from his inspecting tour to Mojave Desert. He reports plenty of bayonet cactus, suitable for making paper, at a distance of thirty miles from the railroad, and he left Mr. Jones up there to contract for cutting and hauling it to the terminus. Of course, the profit of his enterprise depends on the price of labor and freights, and we trust, our city and county authorities will give him every aid, so that he will not be compelled to go to San Bernardino, where labor, rents and water are so cheap. A little aid in exemption from taxation for a term of years may do much towards making Los Angeles a manufacturing center.—Herald. From Tuesday's Daily. In the case of Bauchamp vs. Morrillo, the jury decided in favor of plaintiff. The stages last night were crowded with passengers for Santa Ana, Orange and Tustin. We call attention to the new stock of goods just received at Goodman & Rimpau's. The father of Mr. D. C. Hayward, of Orange, arrived last night with his family. Dr. D'Assonville returned from San Diego yesterday, and can now be found at his office in Langenberger's building on Centre Street. Messrs. P. Davis & Bro. have received a letter dated at San Francisco, from H. M. Johnson, a new comer to this State, in which the writer propounds certain queries relative to the resources of this section. He was induced to write to Davis & Bro., because of having seen an advertisement in the Gazette, in which they offer to sell homesteads at extremely reasonable rates. In the case of John Reed et al. vs. Quintano et al., the Supreme Court on Friday affirmed the Judgment of the Seventeenth District Court, which judgment had been in favor of plaintiffs. This suit involved the title to a tract of land in the San Jose valley, near Spadra, embracing about 1,600 or 1,700 acres of very valuable land, claim by the plaintiffs as being a part of the Puente ranch and embraced in their patent thereto. The suit has been pending about seven years. From Thursday's Daily. The total receipts at the Orphan's Fair, in Los Angeles, amounted to $1,752 40. About $500 in money and goods was stolen. A little rain fell this morning, as a warning to farmers that they had better get their grain and hay under cover. The Red Men of Los Angeles had a celebration yesterday, at which J. G Eastman delivered a two column and a half speech. There is a demand for ribbons and little "ebicken fixins" that will enhance the possibility of getting the ring at the Good Templars' Festival. The Chinamen in Los Angeles have contributed a large sum of money for the relief of their countrymen in Virginia City. The Prescott brought 170,000 feet of lumber for Halberstadt & Co. A gentleman from Orange reports that new buildings are going up in every direction. Six families, of one name, came to settle two days ago. A constant stream of people pour in intent upon finding homes. No rain fell in Orange this morning. The third annual meeting of the Southern California Mutual Aid Association. It is with great regret that we chronicle the death of Mr. Adam Hill. He had only been sick about ten days, and his demise, although not altogether unexpected, was a painful surprise to many friends who lost a short time ago had seen him in the full bloom of a vigorous manhood. The Festival last night was well attended, and the pecuniary result was highly satisfactory to the management. Miss Nellie Kuechel was voted the prettiest young lady present, and a handsome gold ring now adorns Nellie's finger. A Santa Ana man, one of the most handsome fellows in that burg, was voted to be the homelest man present. One would suppose that wine was so plenty in Anaheim that a man had no need to steal any. So Mr. H. Lowenstein thought, as he put his damn john on the floor at the depot and went to buy his ticket. But alas for his blind confidence in human nature! His demijohn of the finest port disappeared with a rapidity that could only be compared to lightning.
