MISSING LABELS.
The Derby in England was won by Gallopin; Glaremount second.
The Postmaster-General is resolved to use his influence to have the present newspaper postage law modified as soon as Congress meets.
Rose George Vail, of New Jersey, is dead. His age was 72. He was twice in Congress, Consul at Glasgow, and was with Professor Morse, perfecting the telegraph.
A person was told that three yards of cloth, by being wet, would shrink one quarter of a yard. "Well, then," he inquired, "If you should wet a quarter of a yard, would there be any left."
A little four-year-old woke up very early one morning, and seeing the full moon from the window, he innocently remarked: "I should think it was about time for Dod to take that moon on."
"My dear," said a husband, in startled tones, after waking his wife in the middle of the night, "I have swallowed a dose of strychnine!" "Well, then, do, for goodness sake, lie still, or it may come up."
The sale of postage stamps during April was the largest ever known in a single month, amounting to $3,000,000. This is 20 per cent. above the corresponding month last year. Postal cards do not seem to interfere with the business of letter writing.
A witty Englishman who answered at a dinner at Concord, the other day, to the toast "the Queen," said, "I wish to express my satisfaction in being with you here to-day, and my equal satisfaction in having been absent a hundred years ago."
This year the southern counties of California, principally Los Angeles, sent to San Francisco 5,380,000 oranges, 620,000 lemons and 80,000 limes. The consumption of California is about 10,-000,000 oranges a year, and 5,000,000

The Ohio State Journal tells of a village clergyman who, visiting a parishoner suffering from a lingering disease, expressed to his wife a hope that she sometimes spoke to him of the future. "I do, indeed, sir," was the reply. "Often and often I wakes him in the night and says, John, John, you little think of the torments as is prepared for you."
We are informed that Hon. Mr. Aermann, Superintendent of the Railway Postal Service, is on his way down the coast, and may be expected here shortly. We hope that he will speedily recify the detention of our mails in Los Angeles, which has been going on about long enough. We are inclined to believe that he will do it.—San Diego Union.
Some soldiers under Captain Walker burned fourteen wagons and destroyed everything belonging to the Black Hills Transportation Company, at Gordon City, Nebraska. He brought the expedition to Camp Randall. The officers and soldiers ransacked the camp, appropriating what they wanted for themselves.
Jekyll told Moore of a man who had said his eating cost almost nothing, for "on Sunday," said he, "I always dine with an old friend, and then eat so much that it lasts until Wednesday, when I buy some tripe, which I hate like the old boy, and which accordingly makes me so sick that I cannot eat any more until Sunday again.
The San Antonio, Texas, Herald gives the following notice to its subscribers: "Hereafter, we shall publish the list of the names of those who go a fishing on the Lord's day and fail to send us a string of trout. Perch and sucker have too many bones in them to allow us to forget that the moral element of our population look to the press to eradicate this growing desecration of the Sabbath.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., May 27.
There was a terrible disaster at South Holyoke to-night. The French Catholic Church took fire from the ignition of the altar decorations. The building was crowded with people at the Vesper service. The audience numbered about seven hundred. Those in the body of the church escaped. Of those in the gallery many were crushed to death on the narrow stairs, and others were killed by jumping from the windows to the floor of the church. Many perished in the flames. There are sixty dead bodies and almost a dozen fatally injured. Several hundred were more or less injured. The scene beggared description. In several instances whole families perished. The priests did their utmost to save the congregation, working heroically. The whole affair was over in fifteen minutes, and the church entirely destroyed. Also the priest's house in the rear of the church.
A French journalist met with a strange pet the other day when paying a visit. While he was talking he noticed something moving on the carpet which was neither dog nor cat. On looking again he saw that it was a fine lobster, dark gray, spotted with red, and thought it must have escaped from the kitchen. The lady smiled, and said, "I must tell you the history of my pet. Some months ago I bought a lobster, and as it was not wanted for dinner my cook left it in the water in the kitchen. I was going to a ball that night, and being ready I sat in an easy chair and fell asleep. Suddenly I sprang up from the pain of a sharp bite in my foot, and I saw the lobster biting it. I started up and ran to the kitchen. No one was there, and a cloth in front of the fire had caught fire. It was soon extinguished, but I have kept the lobster ever since out of gratitude." It has its basin of cold water, and seems to recognize its mistakes, and is so fond of music that it is always drawn towards the piano whenever she plays.

VINEGAR BITTERS
Dr. J. Walker’s California Vinegar Bitters are a purely Vegetable preparation made chiefly from the native herbs found on the lower ranges of the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, the medicinal properties of which are extracted therefrom without the use of Alcohol. The question is almost daily asked: “What is the cause of the unparalleled success of VINEGAR BITTERS?” Our answer is: that they remove the cause of disease, and the patient recovers his health. They are the great blood purifier and a life-giving principle; a perfect Renovator and Invigorator of the system. Novor before in the history of the world has a medicine been compounded possessing the remarkable qualities of VINEGAR BITTERS in healing the sick of every disease man is heir to. They are a gentle Purgeal as well as a Tonic, relieving Congestion or Inflammation of the Liver and Visceral Organs, in Billions Diseases.
The properties of Dr. Walker’s VINEGAR BITTERS are Apertive, Diaphoretic, Carminative, Nutritious. Exasitive, Diuretic, Sedative, Counter-Irritant, Suddificie, Alterative, and Anti-Billiona.
