Anaheim Gazette SATURDAY...JUNE 5, 1875. CHURCH MEETINGS. FIRST PRECARRIAN CHURCH. Rev. J. M. Allis, Pastor. Regular services at 11 a.m. Meeting for practice in Congregational singing and for Bible study on Thursday at 7:20 p.m. EPISCOPAL CHURCH. Rev. W. S. Madsen, Pastor. Regular services every Sunday morning at 11 a.m. Kleinigkeiten. The grasshopper has become a burden at Capistrano. The youth of San Juan Capistrano are becoming festive. A dance nearly every night last week. P. Davis & Bro. have let the contract for the construction of six cottages on their vineyard lot. Our streets were thronged yesterday with six and eight horse wagons loaded with freight. The election of School Trustees for Anaheim district takes place on the last Saturday of June. Application has been made for the establishment of a money order office at Anaheim. The Anaheim public schools will close on next Friday. The vacation will last for about nine weeks. E. A. Pullen has been appointed Census Marshal, and is now performing the duties pertaining to that position. Charles W. Gould has withdrawn from the contest for the Recorder's office and is a candidate for County Auditor. Arthur Helmann will build another dwelling house on his lot on Los Angeles street. E. W. Champlin is the contractor. Mr. R. Luedke, the jeweler, showed us a stone the other day, which possesses quite a history. In 1849, Pope Pius IX presented to a favorite priest a ring. "In the center of the ring was a large agate, on which a head was carved, and on each side were five diamonds of rare beauty. The ring was purchased from the priest by Mr. Luedke, in 1852, for $850. The diamonds were put into rings and sold for fabulous prices, but the large agate Mr. Luedke retained, and has just had it placed in a gold setting. A rodeo of the Ancient and Horrible Order of Callithumpians will be held in Los Angeles to-night, to make arrangements for the due observance of the Fourth of July, and the Great Sphinx has issued a mandate requiring our attendance. As we run with another maniada we can not attend the rodeo, and we hope the noble Sphinx will not pour upon us the barbed shafts of his vengeance. We humble ourselves before him as we do before—a bucking mewl. County Recorder Gillette again requests all holders of mortgages, who have received full payment for the same, to have them canceled before the end of June; as at the session of the Board of Supervisors on the first Monday in July, the mortgages, chattel mortgages and trust deeds, then uncanceled, will be taxed. Any partial payments made can be entered in the margin of the record, and taxation made only on the balance. In his letter this week, our writer on local improvements files his objections against willow fences, as hiding from the eyes of travelers the charming appearance of our vineyards and gardens. The point is well taken. How much more attractive, for instance, does Mr. Bittner's orchard look since he has removed the willows and School Exams The annual Exam Anaheim Public School Wednesday, June 9 three days. Gould has withdrawn from the contest for the Recorder's office and is a candidate for County Auditor. Arthur Helmann will build another dwelling house on his lot on Los Angeles street. E. W. Champlin is the contractor. A. Bailey, Esq., will be a candidate for the Assembly, subject to a nomination by the Independent Convention. The water ditch at San Juan Capistrano is being enlarged, to accommodate the increasing farming interests in that valley. The dancing school season terminated on Thursday night with a very pleasant party, which was greatly enjoyed by the participants. Spurgeon's fine building at Santa Ana is so far completed as to enable that gentleman to move his goods into it early next week. Vivian gave an entertainment at Kroeger's hall last evening, but the late hour at which it took place prevents our being able to give a report. Visitors to the Hot Springs at San Juan Capistrano are rejoicing at the splendid accommodations furnished by Mendelson, of the Post Office store. In the District Court on Monday, in the case of Robinson vs. Palmer, et al, a motion for a new trial was argued, submitted and granted. Members of the Fire Company are requested to meet at Enterprise Hall on next Monday evening, to transact business of importance. The election in Water District No. 2 will be held to-day. A. Langenberger, John Fischer and David Evey are candidates for Commissioners, and W. W. Curtis for Overseer. Between 3 and 4 o'clock on Wednesday morning, quite a smart shower of rain fell about 1½ miles north of town. It wet the ground to the depth of one inch. As many of the members of Anaheim Lodge, No. 207, F. & A. M., as can make it convenient, are requested to be at the Hall to-morrow afternoon at 2 o'clock. H. M. Mitchell announces himself to-day as a candidate for the office of Sheriff. Our present Sheriff, Rowland, has decided not to be a candi- canceled, will be taxed. Bittner's orchard look since he has removed the willows and substituted a rail fence. In their explorations for artesian water, Messrs. Viles and Marsh sunk a pipe one hundred and thirty five feet, when it lodged against a boulder, making further progress impossible. As the water is within 2¼ feet of the surface, they will let the pipe remain and make a second attempt for flowing water on some other part of their farm. The Independent County Committee meet in Los Angeles today to discuss matters and things connected with the forthcoming election. It is considered highly probable that the programme of two years ago will be repeated—the Independents and Republicans will unite in making nominations. The Committee of the Board of Directors of the Hotel Association have adopted a plan for the building, drawn by E. F. Kysor. The building will consist of a basement, two stories, and a mansard roof, which may be called a half story. It is probable that the work of excavating the cellar will be commenced next week. Edward S. Baker, travelling agent for the seed firm of E. J. Bowen, called on us yesterday. Mr. Baker has traveled through nearly every county in the State, and he informs us that the crops in Los Angeles look better and will yield greater than in any other county. Four miles and seven hundred feet of the Cajon ditch has been completed. The most difficult and expensive part of the ditch is finished, the balance of the excavations being comparatively easy. The main ditch will be about nine miles long. G. D. Plato, during his recent visit to San Francisco, purchased a large stock of dry goods, groceries, crockery, etc., etc. They ask buyers to visit their store and ascertain the prices at which they sell their goods. Our present Sheriff, Rowland, has decided not to be a candidate for re-election. Mr. H. T. Payne has been busily engaged for the last few days taking photographs of private residences in this vicinity. He is a fine artist. He has taken some excellent stereoscope views of the town from various points. Hammel & Denker, proprietors of the U.S. Hotel in Los Angeles, have purchased Bergson's interest in Vineyard lot D3. They will probably advertise "city lots for sale" next week. We have been furnished with the following list of shipments from the Anaheim depot during the month of May: 2,540 lbs wine; 221,161 lbs grain; 113,664 lbs wool; 15,252 lbs potatoes; 46,023 lbs merchandise. A. G. Smith has been appointed agent for the London Assurance Corporation, the oldest company in existence. Those desiring to insure property would do well to consult with Mr. Smith. The orchard of Dr. Hardin is one of the prettiest sights in Anaheim, and furnishes many an Easterer with a fertile text on which to build up a glowing panegyric on wonderful California. The Code makes it optional with the Board of Supervisors to consolidate the offices of Sheriff and Tax Collector, and Recorder and Auditor, and that body having failed to act upon the matter those offices are now separate. School Examinations. The annual Examinations of Anaheim Public Schools will begin on Wednesday, June 9th, and continue three days. The following is the programme of examinations: GRAMMAR AND HIGH SCHOOL. Wednesday, June 9. Exercises in Botany, Mental Arithmetic, Chemistry, Rhetoric, Geography and Grammar. Thursday, June 10. Pupils, on completing the studies in each grade of the course adopted by the State Board of Education, are required to pass examination in those studies before promotion to a higher grade. Pupils who leave school before examinations will not be allowed to join their glasses at the beginning of next term, unless they have passed examination. This regulation will be strictly enforced. Parents will please see that their children are present on examination days. J. M. GUINN, Principal. A SLANDER. Chas. A. Gardner, of the Napa Register, having insinuated himself into the good graces of a Napa stable-keeper, persuaded that worthy to furnish him with a "mount" on credit; and instead of being duly grateful for the favor, he launches an anathema at the victimized Napalte in particular and livery stable men in general. He says: "I notice these livery men always stand by their horses be they good, bad or indifferent. I got one once at Anaheim, for a little ride, and before Mr. Rajph Congdon has one of the finest crops and prettiest places in San Juan valley. He subscribes for the Gazette, and consequently knows how to farm. A Duluth editor, who has thus far evaded the fool-killer, has issued a card announcing the birth of his baby. The card is illustrated with capitals and the words "tan pounds" are printed in the corner. If that poor little thing could realize what a ridiculous father it has, it would immediately perish. Governor Pacheco has issued a proclamation offering a reward of $500 for the arrest of John Cotton and Caroline Norton, suspected of being the parties who murdered John Norton in Santa Barbara county, about the 15th of last April. The reward is payable upon the conviction of the parties. A dispatch from London states that the specie on board the wrecked steamer Schiller remains undiscovered. Multilated bodies of victims of the disaster continue to come ashore. M. A. Mendelson has now on hand one of the largest and most complete stocks of gentlemen's furnishing goods ever brought to Anaheim. Also a fine stock of piece goods. He agrees to cut all goods, sold by the yard, free of charge. Al Smith is now established in the building formerly occupied by the Water Company, and is prepared to make pictures in the latest styles, and from a socket to a life size. Photographs, ambrotypes, and sun-pearls. Give us a call and examine our work. Remember the place—Centre Street, opposite the Planters' Hotel. Bananas, cocoanutts, chocolate creams and a fine assortment of candies at the Western Union Telegraph store. Also finest brands of cigars. We give all our Bookbinding to M. W. He says: "I notice these livery men always stand by their horses be they good, bad or indifferent. I got one once at Anaheim, for a little ride, and before I had gone a hundred feet from the stable door the brute bucked and threw me off. I went round more times than a Fourth-of-July pin wheel, and at last lit on the ground, hard enough to make me think a comet had struck me in the back. I was afraid to open my eyes at first, for fear I should find myself dead, but when I did, I found there was nothing serious the matter, and with aching bones, and a very injured expression of countenance, limped back to the stable and demanded to know what they meant by giving me such a horse as that. Well, would you believe it? instead of ample expressions of regret, which I felt sure must be waiting me, that livery man actually set to work to convince me that it was all my own fault—the horse wasn't to blame at all, I hadn’t checked him up tight enough; and all that, and before he got through I felt satisfied, not only that the brute was not to blame, but that I owed him an apology for getting off in that unceremonious manner."
