Stock-holders in the Wharf Company can now receive their certificates of stock by application to the Secretary or President.
Rev. Isaac Atherton of Riverside will hold divine services in the Presbyterian Church tomorrow at 11 o'clock A.M., and 7:30 P.M.
The Steamship, Pacific, has been substituted for the Senator on the Pacific Mail Company's Coast Line, and will leave for San Francisco on Monday next.
A meeting of great importance will be held this evening by Anaheim Lodge F. & A.M. All members and sojourning brethren in good standing are requested to attend.
The well-born engaged at work at Mr. Shultz's place, three miles Northwest of town, are now down over two hundred feet with good prospects for artesian water.
Trinidad Manquern, formerly a resident of this place, and until within a few days ago an inmate, of the County Hospital at Los Angeles, died at Fontana's restaurant on Wednesday morning.
The contract for the erection of a school-house in Cajon school district will be awarded in a few days. It will be located on a part of Kraemer's rancho, that gentleman having donated a school site.
A brother of Mr. Chris Reardon has purchased a tract of upland, adjoining the Semi-Tropical Nursery of R. H. Gillman. He is shaking upon it an artesian well, which he intends to use for irrigating purposes.
Certificates of stock, by-laws, receipts, bill-heads, letter-heads, cards, posters and every imaginable kind of printing done at the Southern California office in a workmanlike manner and at low rates. Our type are all new and of the latest design. Call and see specimens.
We learn by the Star that one of a rare species of septile, the "hooded rattlesnake," has been recently killed on the San Joaquin rancho. The first and only other one of the kind, ever seen in this vicinity, was killed some years ago near the Tomatoes on the same rancho.
It may be well to state a fact, which we believe is not generally known, that the odor arisidg from castor beans is highly poisonous. A very worthy gentleman, living near Anaheim, whilst engaged in picking castor beans was severely poisoned by their fumes.
In Mr. Olden's office can be seen a small branch of hop vine having upon it one hundred and twenty-eight bolls. This splendid specimen was raised on the plantation of J. B. Raine. This gentleman has a large force at work picking, and feels greatly elated at the success with which his experiment has been rewarded.
To those who on account of the heat have not that alacrity of spirit nor cheer of mind that they were wont to have, we would speak words of wisdom and advice. One sip of Blanken's chromo-"Harefoot boy of the sea" "Krokay" is a very fashionable amusement here...Mr. Isbell has an orange sprout, three weeks old and twenty-two inches long. Let Anaheim nurseries beat that.
A CELESTIAL DEED.-Wau Si Wau, although occupying a short time since the menial position of cook to the sheep-shearers of the San Joaquin, is nevertheless a man who holds himself haughtily, and one who, while dishing out beans and "sich like" to the common herd, feeds his own proud ambition with such daring hopes as creatures of a more eternal nature alone should form. Last Wednesday he imagined himself Siva, the destroyer, or at least would have done so if his childhood hours had been innocently passed in toddling out of the way of crocodiles of the Ganges; at any rate he determined to propitiate himself with a human offering, and selected as a fit sacrifice a very small celestial dish-washer, belonging to the Sam Lee Company, his hereditary enemy. First knocking down with a billet of wood the object of his fire, he loosened his scalp with a bread-knife, and finished the job by extracting his back hair by means of a large dipper-full of boiling water. Justice resented this infringement upon its prerogative, but owing to its proverbial blindness, or to the ignorance of the San Lee Company regarding "Melican" law, the culprit was arraigned in the wrong township. Justice had no jurisdiction, and Wau Si Wau again breathes the free odors of Sin Si Wau's wash-house, proud of his strong right arm, and happy in the consciousness of doughy deeds, worthily performed.
CARD OF THANKS.-Ed. Californian: Please permit us through your friendly columns to express our profoundest gratitude for the sum of $79.30 result of the Social entertainment given at Orange the evening of the 25th inst. under the supervision of the ladies. It would be difficult to personate and do justice to the unanimity of effort and energy on the part of all Christians in making it a success, and the extensive co-operation of non-professors, renders it almost impossible to discriminate in publishing our thanks. We therefore turn to Orange and a number from Anaheim, Santa Ana and Tustin with truly grateful acknowledgements, many kind wishes and earnest prayers that God may refund from his boundless storehouse rich and eternal blessings on you all. In unity and love.
W.A. & A.M. Knighten.
Orange August 17th 1874.
WORK COMMENCED.-We learn from the Los Angeles Express that Mr. Miller, the Secretary of the Southern Pacific Construction Company, is now in Los Angeles for the purpose of making all necessary financial arrangements to complete the Anaheim Branch. On Monday morning last ground was broken upon the station between this place and Los Nietos Station, and since that time the construction force has been busily engaged at work. In Mr. Olden's office can be seen a small branch of hop vine having upon it one hundred and twenty-eight bolls. This splendid specimen was raised on the plantation of J. B. Raine. This gentleman has a large force at work plecking, and feels greatly elated at the success with which his experiment has been rewarded.
To those who on account of the heat have not that alacrity of spirit nor cheer of mind that they were wont to have, we would speak words of wisdom and advice. One slp of Blanken's Celebrated Semi-Tropical Bitters will bathe the drooping spirits in delight beyond the bliss of dreams. Be wise and taste.
Mr. Olden reports that the demand for land has been very active for the past month and still continues. The section, considered most desirable at present by purchasers, is the Coyote Creek neighborhood. The uncertainty of a large canal, and the certainty of artesian wells has caused all inquiry among the uplands to cease.
Quite a pleasant party of friends assembled on Monday evening at the house of Sefor Don Marcos Yorba, of Upper Santa Ana, in order to do honor to the anniversary of the natal day of that worthy gentleman. We do not know the number of his summers and winters which the Fates, counting by years, have recorded as past, but we do know that, counting by his virtues, he scores a thousand.
Charlie Hille's late baker, who objected to being discharged from service, and who on the strength of his discharge got drunk, threatened to poison the unbaked bread, smashed things generally around the bakery, and gave other evidences of emotional Titonism, is pondering the subject over in the county jail. It will require ninety days for him to complete his meditations.
The Indianapolis Journal, of August 17th says; "Prof. Ruthard has disposed of his property on Buchanan street preparatory to leaving for California with his family to take their permanent residence." For nearly a year the professor has been a subscriber to the Californian, and in a letter states that he intends to locate at Anahaim, should the place agree with the appents published by us. He is an intimate friend of Benner-schelds.
WORK COMMENCED. — We learn from the Los Angeles Express that Mr. As there is but little work requisite to prepare the road-bed for the reception of the iron, and as the road will be puahed to completion as rapidly as possible in order to secure the shipment of a portion of the grain crop, the iron horse can confidently be expected to make its first appearance in Anaheim in the first days of November next. A party of engineers are now encamped at Los Coyotes house, and are engaged in establishing the final location stakes along the route. The location of the depot will therefore soon cease to be a non-solved conundrum.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS.—A called meeting of the Board of Directors of the Bolsa Chica Wharf and Forwarding Company was held on Monday afternoon at the office of President Fischer. A full Board was in attendance. The vacancy occasioned by the resignation of Mr. D. W. Fields was filled by the election of Mr. W. T. Glassall of Orange. The Committee on Subscriptions reported that ninety additional shares of stock had been subscribed since their appointment at the last regular meeting. As the first assessment of $5 per share will become delinquent on September 1st, the secretary was instructed to notify all shareholders whose assessments still remain unpaid, to that effect. The Board then adjourned until 2 o'clock P.M. on Monday August 31st.
LETTERS AND PACKAGES—Packages addressed to the following persons, were remaining in Wells Fargo & Co.'s Express on Friday, August 28th 1874: Mrs. J. McFadden, Jose Corona, S. Hamilton 2 Clark & Austin, Mrs Behnna: The following is the list of letters remaining on the same date; Tim Carroll, A. A. Gwin, Win McPherson, Rev. J. M. Lathy, Capt. Willard Klitterage, S.
