Southern Californian SATURDAY...AUGUST 29, 1874 A Dispatch from Louisville, Ky., states that Arnold of Arizona diamond fields notoriety, has been arrested in that city at the instance of L. L. Trendwell, and will be brought to California for trial. The charge against him is obtaining $75,000 under false pretenses. His trial and the suit of Michael Reese against Latham and other prominent men of San Francisco may develop certain features of those mysterious ways in which the financial undercurrent of San Francisco has hitherto moved. Latest advice from the Black Hills country confirm the first reports about the unparalleled richness of its mineral wealth. In its placer diggings it is asserted that man can gather an average of $100 per day by simply picking up the golden nuggets. Civilians, who have accompanied Gen. Costar's expedition, intend returning in force to work the claims which they have located during the military occupation, and every appearance indicates a violent out-break of the gold fever. One good always results from the recurrence of this epidemic—the large cities are relieved thereby of their surplus idlers. Major H. M. Mitchell of Los Angeles has been recently appointed by Sheriff Rowland as his Chief Deputy to fill the vacancies, arising from the resignation of Messrs Johnson and Baldwin. The selection of this gentleman for this position will afford a general satisfaction throughout the entire county, not only because it is a recognition of the value of his past services in the criminal department of the office, but more especially because he is unquestionably the best man for them. A LETTER OF INQUIRY. Among other letters of inquiry concerning Southern California of which we are constantly in receipt, we select the following one for publication for the reason that it appears to be written by a laboring man, one of a class in great demand at the present time in this section: Le Roy, Cuffy Co., Kansas, August 2d, 1874. Ed. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIAN: My self and several others desire to emigrate to your State this Fall. We have no capital but our hands and average brains, with some experience of the rough side of life. We would like to see Southern California before settling down, and we seek reliable information regarding your State. Can you answer for us the following questions; if not, will you please hand this to some one who can and will give us reliable and truthful answers: Can four or five single men, each bearing good credentials as to moral characters and personal habits, obtain land with team, seed, etc., for a crop this Fall? What crop would it be best for us to plant? What share would we receive for doing the labor? We are without capital; if we go to your State, we go to stay and make homes for ourselves. Would you advise us to come to your State? Please mail to names given below any information which you may give but don't send any that is not reliable. R. M. The selection of this gentleman for this position will afford a general satisfaction throughout the entire county, not only because it is a recognition of the value of his past services in the criminal department of the office, but more especially because he is unquestionably the best man for the place. We congratulate Mr. Rowland upon having secured the services of no valuable and efficient an assistant. Whether the comet has anything to do with increasing the speed of horses, as well as enhancing the excellence of a vintage, we know not, but one thing is evident, and that is that the turf record of the present year is without a parallel. Goldsmith Maid has barely achieved the feat of making the fastest trotting mile, recorded, when the news comes from Saratoga that "Fellowcraft," a four year old, has beaten Lexington's celebrated four-mile time by one-quarter of a second. Lexington ran against time, carrying 103 pounds, and made the four miles in 7:19; whilst Fellowcraft carried 108 pounds and won his race over two contestants in 7:19; besides laboring under the additional disadvantage of being one year younger. On next Wednesday the people of the First Supervisor District will hold an election to fill the vacancy caused by the expiration of the term of Supervisor Griffith, who on account of the demands of private business declines a re-election. Although it may appear invidious to especially praise one member of a Board, such as at present have charge of the administration of county affairs, and which appears to act with but the single sense to prove worthy of the trust, which has been delegated to them, still in view of Mr. Griffith's retirement to private life we can not refrain from briefly mentioning the high estimation in which he is held as a public officer in this section of the county, and express at the same time the general regret which is felt on account of his determination to no longer serve the public. We trust that in the future this resolution may be rescinded, and that the county may again reap the benefit of the wisdom, experience and integrity of one of its most worthy citizens. The first chapter of the Tilton- Purchasers of land in any of the settlements in this county are required to pay in cash one-fourth of the purchase money and are given one, two and three years in which to pay the balance, their notes bearing interest at the rate of ten per cent. per annum. In some exceptional cases the cash payment has been waived, but only then to laboring men, who were well known in their community as industrious and enterprising men. These conditions are general in all portions of the State, although owing to the comparative ages of the different settlements, it is conceded that land can be procured in the Southern counties on more favorable terms than in other localities. Any one, therefore, coming to any part of the Pacific Coast with the expectation of being started in business on their own account by the large landowners or by capitalists, would be most certainly disappointed. However, any number of industrious, hard-working men can obtain steady, constant employment on the farm at wages, ranging from twenty-five to thirty gold dollars per month with board and lodging additional. If their habits of life are economical, in one year's time they can save sufficient money to make the first payment upon forty acres of land, and with the land in possession can obtain from the merchants any necessary advances to farm for themselves. Good lands can be obtained from fifteen to forty dollars per acre according to location; a pair of substantial farm horses are worth one hundred dollars, and farming implements are valued at the same prices in gold as they are quoted at in currency in the Eastern States. Our advice to laboring men, who are dissatisfied with their present surroundings, can best be given in Greeley's laconic words, "Go West;" and when you do start come to Southern California. Come too with the understanding that before you are years of hard and laborious toll, but with the certainty as well that in no other section of the United States will your labor be so quickly, so surely and so amply repaid. SIGNIFICANT. The "Notice to Shippers," which appears in our column of new advertisements to-day, informing them that for the next seven days no freight will be received by the agent of the Anaheim Lighter Company, brings the realization of those forebodings which have been for some time past experienced by the Trustees of that Company in regard to their capability of handling the produce of this section. ING the high estimation in which he is held as a public officer in this section of the county, and express at the same time the general regret which is felt on account of his determination to no longer serve the public. We trust that in the future this resolution may be rescinded, and that the county may again reap the benefit of the wisdom, experience and integrity of one of its most worthy citizens. The first chapter of the Tilton-Beecher scandal has been closed. The Committee of Investigation has adjudged Mr. Beecher guilty of the charges preferred against him. That this decision will meet with general approval we do not hesitate to believe. Beecher, although visionary in the highest extreme and much addicted to hyperbole in speech and writing, has hitherto borne a personal reputation of spotless integrity, whilst Tilton's life has been woven of but a single thread, and that of evil imaginings and worse action. From Tilton and Moniton's statements it is easily discernible that the affair had its inception and performance solely in an attempt to black-mail a man, whose eminence in his profession made him fear even the appearance of evil, and it is equally evident that the silence of these men caused, when the victim would no longer be bled. If Tilton has spoken the truth, although his character and his associations forbid the supposition, by his own statement he stands before the public as one who for years has traded upon his wife's shame; if he has made false statements, he appears as one who, in hope of gain, has wilfully trampled upon and destroyed the most sacred of all human ties. In either case he is more than contemptible, and therefore unworthy of belief unless backed by the most convincing testimony. That testimony has not been forthcoming, and therefore the Committee has properly refused to credit so disdainous a charge. The reason of this determination to receive no freight during the coming week is because the warehouses of the Lighter Company are now filled to overflowing, and as their receipts per diem largely exceed their capacity for shipment it becomes necessary for them as a matter of business to refuse to accept a responsibility, which is likely to involve them in pecuniary loss. The question naturally arises what locality is most likely to be inconvenienced by cramped shipping facilities. Work is now in active progress upon the section of the Anaheim Branch of the Southern Pacific Railway, lying between Los Nietos depot and this place, and within a period of ninety days at the outside Anaheim and the section of country to the North and West will be placed thereby in close connection with Wilmington. Our residents, therefore, will have the choice of two routes to the sea, and should business exigencies prevent the farmer or merchant from awaiting his chance to ship by the cheaper route—Anaheim Landing, he can always avail himself of the railroad passing his door. The sections, most affected by this inconvenience, are those of Santa Ana, Orange and Tustin City. Should Anaheim Landing be temporarily closed to them they will be compelled to haul their produce almost an equal distance in the terminus of the railway. It is easily seen, therefore, that it is their interest, more than all others, that there should be some convenient outlet. This outlet will be given to them by the construction of the Bala Chien wharf, and from motives of self interest alone their aid in the successful prosecution of this work should be readily and voluntarily given. AROUND THE COUNTY. Dr. Lacky is the president of the Los Angeles Literary Club. Gabriel Allen Esq., offers himself as a candidate for Supervisor of the First District. Col. Bicknell has been elected Secretary of the L.A.Oil Refining Company vice Col. R.L. Peel, resigning. Ree W.H. Hill, rector of St. Athanasius Church, is absent in San Francisco on a visit to his family. The First Presbyterian Church of Los Angeles have organized a Sunday School with Dr.J.H.McKee as Superintendent. The proprietors of the United States Hotel of Los Angeles have taken possession of the new extension to their Hotel, and are now prepared to give the most ample accommodations to the travelling public. Mr. Burlingame of Compton has succeeded in obtaining artesian water at a depth of 130 feet. The flow is very abundant, rising four inches above the pipe, which extends seven feet above the ground. Major Bell and David Waldron had a fight on Saturday afternoon last near the Zanjero's office, in which Waldron was severely stunned by a blow from a pruning shear. A short time afterward the parties met a second time near the City Hall, which resulted in a regular pugillistic encounter, and in which Major Bell received quite severe punishment. On Wednesday following Justice Gray committed Major Bell to await the action of the Grand Jury upon a charge of assault with a deadly weapon. NEWS IN BRIEF.
