OEO. C. KNOX ... EDITOR.
SATURDAY ... JUNE 27, 1874.
PETER DONAHUE has been laying up treasure, too. He has presented St. Patrick's church, in San Francisco, with a chime of bells. Six thousand dollars is the amount invested.
The Royal family of England is binding itself to the reigning families of the Continent in the strongest of all ties—the noose matrimonial. The Prince of Wales has for a wife a daughter of Denmark, the Crown Princess of Prussia is a daughter of England, the Duke of Edinburgh calls Alexander of Russia, Papa, and now comes the rumor that the Princess Beatrice is betrothed to Napoleon IV.
The question of wood is getting to be of a serious nature. Our supply has been, heretofore, principally derived from the caffions lying in the San Jose hills. The Government has forbidden any more cutting of its wood; the lands are unsurveyed and not in the market; when they are presented for sale, they are not placed within the reach of the poor man. What is to be done? Burn corn-cobs, we suppose, or pay twenty dollars per cord to the ranch owners.
There are certain social duties, with which the Kings or Queens of England are expected to comply. The performance of these duties have been delegated by the present Queen, upon whom the crown bears onerously, to her son, the future sovereign. Rumor says that in doing so he has contracted a debt of $300,000, which he objects to paying, as it was in the performance of his mother's work. She refuses to cancel the indebtedness as she did not contract it. The Prince has an income of half a million, and the Queen an income of a million. The Guelphs are a thrifty family in the true New England.
ANAHEIM AND ITS SURROUNDINGS—THEN AND NOW.
It is almost impossible for one to take in the extent of the settlement, of which Anaheim is the centre, by the ordinary hurried visits of the correspondent or tourist. Not quite six years ago the traveler, after leaving the settlement of Los Nietos, then too in its infancy, passed over an immense uninhabited plain and through a dense undergrowth of mustard and malva, seeing no sign of civilization until he had arrived at the oasis, created by a German colony, devoted to the cultivation of the wine-grape and known as Anaheim. At that time the voting precinct included within its area five government townships of land with hardly fifty voters. Then, there was no settlement east of the Santa Ana river from the Yorbas at the mouth of the Caillon to the Refugio ranch near the sea. In only six year's time, and during six years, unexamined in the memory of the oldest citizen as years of drought, a most marvelous revolution has been effected. In a solid block around Anaheim, twenty thousand acres of land have been sold in small tracts, ranging from twenty to one hundred and sixty acres each, and at least three-fourths of this acreage has been placed under annual cultivation. The voting population of the precinct has increased from the small number mentioned above, until it is tallied by hundreds, and that too after making much smaller the exterior limits of the precinct. On the east side of the river there have been started three settlements, those of Orange, Santa Ana and Tustin City, each of which is growing with unexamplied rapidity. Probably, however, a better idea of the increase in population and wealth can be given by a reference to the exports of last year from Anaheim. Landing. The year was extremely disastrous to the farmer: with but a scant fall of rain, late Spring frosts united to render futile his labors. Notwithstanding this number of tons of grain shipped.

She refuses to cancel the indebtedness as she did not contract it. The Prince has an income of half a million, and the Queen an income of a million. The Guelphs are a thrifty family in the true New England sense of the word.
Some time since we noticed that an appropriation of several thousand dollars had been made for public land surveys in California. During a residence of nearly six years in Los Angeles county we have never known of a single instance of one dollar having been expended upon the public domain, except at the instance and with the money of private individuals. However, Surveyor-General Stratton is a new broom. We trust that he will not follow in the footsteps of his predecessors, and spend the appropriation money among the Apaches in Arizona or on the alkali deserts of the northern portions of Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties.
Mrs. Grundy, a most unreliable dame, has it that the German newspaper, to be published by the Jacoby Bros. at Los Angeles, will be called the "Southern Californian." We are loth to believe that Mr. Conrad Jacoby, with whom we have been most agreeably impressed, will commit so great a faux-pas as to commence its publication under cover of borrowed plumage. In this county the title belongs to us by right of priority. Whatever of good or merit has been associated with the name has been created by our toll and should be courteously respected by our co-laborers; the shortcomings, for which in the future we may incur the responsibility, we prefer should originate from our own mistakes.
LAST Sunday morning's edition of the New Orleans Bulletin appeared partially unprinted, its forms having been seized as it was going to press by order (it is supposed) of Governor Kellogg. "Upharsin," written in letters of fire, is apparent to the most obtuse when such scenes are enacted in Republican France; in a Southern State however, it appears to be the natural result of circumstances over which the Goddess of Liberty possesses no control. Uncle Sam smokes his cigar and there have been started three settlements, those of Orange, Santa Ana and Tustin City, each of which is growing with unexamined rapidity. Probably, however, a better idea of the increase in population and wealth can be given by a reference to the exports of last year from Anaheim Landing. The year was extremely disastrous to the farmer: with but a scant fall of rain, late Spring frosts united to render futile his labors. Notwithstanding this, the number of tons of grain, shipped from Anaheim Landing was 50 per cent of the entire crop of this county, and that of San Bernardino. This year it will largely exceed the above figure, there being a much larger area seeded and the yield being fully up to the capacity of the land. We doubt much if there is afforded in the history of any other newly settled locality an instance of such steady and constant growth as has been afforded by this section, and we believe that this is due to its unrivalled natural advantages, more than to any other cause.
GOOD NEWS.
On Monday the House of Representatives passed the bill supplementary to the Act, incorporating the Texas and Pacific Railway. The bill has already been voted favorably upon by the Senate, and upon its approval by the President will secure the commencement of energetic and active work at this end of the line. The bill provides for the consolidation of the Trans Continental and Southern Pacific branches of the Texas Pacific road in Texas, and the issuance of mortgage bonds upon the completed road. Under the provisions of this bill there is little doubt but what the route, up the coast and through the caffion of the Santa Ana river, will be constructed as a portion of the main trunk line. In that event the junction of the Southern Pacific road with the Texas and Pacific will be at some point in the vicinity of Anaheim. The outlook for the future of our section is very cheering. At the terminus of the Southern Pacific, on the direct line of the Southern Trans Continental road, and with the roadsteads of Newport and Bolsa Chica improved, there is no question but that Anaheim will contend in strong rivalry with Los Angeles as the commercial centre of this locality.

SAN FRANCISCO CALIF.
June 12th, 1874.
ER. GALFORENTIAN—By permission of Assist. George Davidson in charge of U. S. Coast Survey, Pacific Coast, I send you the following elevations of the peaks of the Sierra Madre (San Antonio Range) commencing at the western end of chain and taking only the most prominent elevations:
Peak D.....6185 feet.
E.....7896 "
F.....8377 "
G.....9206 "
H San Antonio mountain highest point.....10142 "
I.....8753 "
J Cucamongo mountain 8774 "
The two blue peaks behind the San Joaquin Rancho, called I believe the Santa Ana range are left hand peak looking East, 5596 feet; right hand peak, 5760 feet.
The distance of San Antonio mountain from the sea coast is 49 statute miles. The geodetic position of Anaheim, S. E. corner of roof of Planters' Hotel is Latitude.....33° 50' North Longitude.....117° 60' West
Anaheim is 13.2 miles from the nearest point of coast line.
The heights are from the level of the sea at mean high water, and were determined trigometrically, and the results can at present be regarded only as approximate on account of the refraction of the atmosphere. To test the relative value of the determination of mountain heights in the Southern portion of California by trigonometry, and the measurement of zenith distances by barometrical measurement and by leveling, Prof. Davidson will institute a series of comparisons some time in the future, when San Antonio mountain will be leveled.
Yours Very truly
