The Pacific Mail Steamship Company intend placing upon the Central Capt. Debney, of the steamer San Luis, made an examination of the bar at Newport on Wednesday. As we missed an opportunity to interview him, whilst passing through Anaheim, we can not give definitely the result of his investigation. The ball, given at Enterprise Hall on Wednesday evening in commemoration of St. John's day, passed off most pleasantly to all participants, and was financially as well as socially, a marked success. The Special meeting of the Board of Supervisors, held on Thursday, was devoted entirely to road-matters. The different road-oversewers presented their yearly reports of work done. The principal business, however, appeared to be an investigation of the proposed direct road from Compton to Los Angeles. The road, as projected, cuts up very badly a portion of the southern suburb of Los Angeles city, and was consequently energetically opposed.
The many friends of Christian Meyerholz, an old resident of Anaheim and now living at Cucamongo, will be grieved to learn of the sad calamity which befel him last week. Whilst she was in the house a younger son of the family came up in the rear of the horse and was kicked so violently that death ensued in a short time after.

Dr. Stanway, of Los Angeles, has just received from Mexico ten thousand lime trees from two to four years old which are now in nursery and can be bought at reasonable prices.
When anger rushes, unrestrained, to action, the man of thought stops selling lager-beer, and provides for his personal safety. So we are informed by those who ought to know.
Over three hundred shares of stock in the Bolsa Chica Wharf and Forwarding Company have been sold on this side of the Santa Ana river. A very favorable showing for one week's solicitation.

An invitation is extended to all business, and the many evidences of his skillful handwork, which meet the eye in every portion of the town, serve well to present him most favorably to the notice of those, desiring his assistance.

A book entitled the "Joys of Life" has been placed upon the editorial table by Clark & Austin, with the request that we review and criticise its contents. We have always held with Burns that "its no' in books, its no' in lear, to make us truly blest" but a careful perusal of the contents of the volume in question has proved that there is no rule without exception. We commend the volume especially to those, whose domestic Junos have proved a thorn in the flesh.
ORANGE ITEMS.-From our correspondent: Mr. Gardner is having a neat residence erected on his place near Mr. Hayward; Mr. Curtis is the builder....The public school under the supervision of Mr. Furlong is a model institution. He is a workman that "needeth not to be ashamed"....The grain crop is doing well; headers are busy gathering the haryest home. Beans not so successful as last year. Corn flourishes....Water runs through the entire plain to Tustin and Santa Ana in the new ditch....A general hunt took place on the Santiago on last Friday, for extermination of rabbits, squirrels, gophers etc. The ladies prepared a lunch and had a pie-mie where the flume crosses the creek....The grasshoppers ate Mr. Pierce's strawberries. Naughty bugs....Munps and Measles both stalk through the community.....Capt. Abbot says Goodall and Nelson will examine the Newport bay with a view to the establishment of a landing at that place....Orange now has a daily mail. The news reaches us in time for breakfast...Our new blacksmith shop has a very significant name in its combined firm. Mr. Quorum, so they can always transact business, and Mr. Cash, so it must be cash business.
"TwAS EVER THUS." — "The best laid schemes 'o mice an' men gang agley," was practically and forebly illustrated by the row at the races on Sunday last. For several weeks past every Sabbath afternoon has witnessed on Los Angeles Street the riotous miltr and unseeingly noise which some folks think is part and parcel of any amusement. However, on the day alluded to, either out of regard for the sensibilities of the more soberly disposed, or in order to give themselves a greater scope to be disagreeable, a rendezvous was appointed outside of town. The fun sped fast and furious until some of the motley crew caught fire with inflaming wrath and business, and the many evidences of his skillful handwork, which meet the eye in every portion of the town, serve well to present him most favorably to the notice of those, desiring his assistance.
