LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
Railroad Meeting Monday Evening.
The citizens' meeting announced for Monday evening last was held according to notice. The street was cheerfully illuminated by a bonfire, and at the appointed hour a large number of our citizens assembled. Mr John Fischer was elected President, and he introduced to the audience Capt. Geo. C. Knox, who proceeded to deliver an address upon the subject of railroads and subsidies generally, particularly advocating the claims of the Los Angeles and San Diego Company.
Mr Knox drew a comparison between the relative demands of the Southern Pacific Co. and the San Diego Company, and also of the advantages to be derived from each. The points of the argument on this question have been already so often and so fully gone over in our columns that it seems hardly necessary to reproduce entire the Captain's address. Suffice it to say that it was a good argument in favor of the San Diego proposition and was well received by the audience.

ARMING CHILDREN.—Our attention was a few days since directed to a boy 12 or 14 years old who was riding around town with a large revolver, strapped conspicuously to his waist. The boy lives with his parents near town and our habitually visits town armed in this way and that a still younger brother comes fitted out in the same hostile manner. This is wrong and dangerous. The weak judgment of a child should never be trusted with deadly weapons to carry into a peaceful society, and the fact of his being allowed to carry them would of itself make a raftion and an outlaw of any boy, it matter how well disposed he may naturally be.
We mention no names at present but if this practise is persisted in we shall deem it our duty to call public attention to individual instances and endeavor by all means to have it stopped.
PERSONAL.—We have been favored with a call from Messrs Samuel Hubbard and H. McLellan, of the Pacific Mail Steamship Co. Mr. Hubbard has just retired from the Los Angeles Agency of the Co. to return to head-quarters at San Francisco, and Mr. McLellan succeeds him as Agent for Los Angeles Co. They are both courteous and affable gentlemen and evince a desire to accommodate our people in every practicable manner. We are to be hereafter advised when the Panama steamers leave San Diego coming up, so that passengers may know when to connect with them. For details of the movements of the magnificent steamers of this line we refer our readers to the timetable and announcement in another

A SAILOR'S DESCRIPTION OF A RIDE ON HORSEBACK. Therefore, arising betimes I hired a very fine horse, and manning him bravely, laid his head east and by south, as near as might be, according to our binnacle. But though the wind was abaft the beam, and tide all in his favor, and a brave commander upon his poop, what did he do but house his stem and run out his sparkler driver, and up with his taffrail as if I was wearing him in a thundering heavy sea. I resolved to get the upper hand of his uncalled-for mutiny; and the more so because all our crew were gazing: and at the fair I had laid down the law very strictly concerning horses. I slipped my feet out of the chains, for fear of any sudden capsize, and then I ran away.

The President on the 11th inst., issued a Thanksgiving proclamation. He recommends "that on Thursday, the 28th day of November next, the people meet at their respective houses of worship, and there make acknowledgments to God for his kindness and bounty."
Not a bad pun this, from the Cincinnati "Commercial;" "It must not be inferred that the country is 'going to the dogs' because the selection of the next President is reduced to a choice between a type setter and a West Pointer."
A little boy in a Brooklyn Sunday school was asked lately to say which was the most beautiful verse in the bible. After some hesitation, he replied blushingly: "If any man pulls down the American flag, shoot him on the spot."
The highest office within the gift of Government is the superintendency of the weather signal-station on Pike's Peak, which is fourteen thousand feet above the sea-level.

THE GRAND GIFT CONCERT.
GIFT MONEY ALL UP.
$500,000 In Bank to Pay Prizes
A Full Drawing in Sight.
THE Grand Gift Concert: for the benefit of the Public Library of Kentucky, is postponed Saturday, the 7th of December, for the following reasons:
1. The failure of certain agents, to make returns in time for the drawing to take place Sept. 28.
2. The accumulation of orders during the last few days to such an extent that it was not possible to fill them and have the drawing on the 28th.
3. The generally expressed desire of ticket holders that a full drawing might be had, even if it made a short postponement necessary.
4. The belief of the management that by a short postponement the remnant of unsold tickets can be disposed of, and all the prizes paid in full without the necessity of any pro rata scaling down.
For these reasons, coupled with the earnest desire to benefit the Public Library by a larger balance and the ticket holders by larger gifts, the concert and distribution have been postponed Saturday, the 7th of December, 1872. On that day, and no other, the drawing will positively and unequivocally come off in the great hall of the Public Library building, beginning at precisely 6 o'clock A.M., and continue until the whole of the one thousand gifts are awarded.
The payment of the gifts will begin the 3rd day after the drawing, and continue for six months, in current funds by the Farmers' and Dovers' Bank, or by sight draft upon the Fourth National Bank New York, at the option of the gift ticket-holders.
