I find in the Los Angeles News of Oct. 24. "Twenty Question for Common School Children, and R. M. Widney Judge." I add the following: If the San Diego road connects with the Scott road 88 miles from Los Angeles. 1st, How can it be 100 miles farther to Arizona by way of Scotts road than it is by Stanford's road, when they must both travel the same route across the mountains 2d. Can any body make one of these roads 100 miles longer than the other without licking Stanford's molasses barrel? 3d. Will Judge Widney ever be competent to act as Judge in any case between the people and Stanford? 4. Will the Judge be Judge after his appointed term is out? Col. Peel's Railroad Speech. Col B L Peel, of Los Angeles, came down Thursday evening, according to announcement, to talk to us about railroad matters. Mr Ganabl had also being announced to come, but his engagement in the celebrated Davies trial prevented his leaving the city. A large audience of our best citizens assembled at the Planters' Hotel and had the pleasure of hearing one of the most manly and sensible speeches, with which we have been favored. The Col. unlike most other speakers of this peculiarly personal age, indulged in no vile fling at Mr Stanford or Mr Hyde, but relied upon the substantial merits of the San Diego proposition to commend it to the good sense of his hearers. His remarks were sound and met with loud and continued applause. We do not think he changed any votes, for people here late residence to morrow at 10 a.m. Horse Taming.—Prof Wright, a gentlemen who claims to have the longest experience of any living man as a professional horse trainer, has been giving lessons here this week in the art of training and rendering serviceable this most useful of domestic animals. We have noted the Professor's instructions as far as time would admit, and, though not a "horse man" nor professing to be a competent judge, we can say that this method seems to us reasonable and successful, and that his instructions embody much curious and valuable information which is worth the price of tuition to any man who handles a horse. As to time and terms apply to Tom Canavon at Planter'S Stable. M Calisher & Co.—We take pleasure in referring to the new announcement of the gentlemen in today's paper. They are receiving entire new lines of goods in every department of their business which, with their usual enterprise and savagacity they are offering at prices which will soon clear them off and make room for other shipments. Wash Yourself!—Take a bath get shaved! Shear that brush-heap off of your head; and disguise yourself so much into the appearance of a gentleman that the man you owe $5 won't know you. See Prof Dean's card. House Moving.—Mr Henry Boege has moved from his late residence on Center street, to the vineyard of Mr Lorenz, on Lemon st., and, unlike must parties who move, has taken his house along with him. Funeral Sermon—a funeral discourse commemorative of Mrs Elizabeth, wife of Rev. John Marquis will be delivered at Enterprise Hall by Rev. L. P. Webber, next Sabbath at 11 o'clock. Friends and the public are cordially invited to attend. Deed Filed—T J F Boege to H. H. Boege; two tracts in Anaheim Extension, for $1,000. Yesterday's Star states that reso- favored. His remarks were sound and met with loud and continued applause. We do not think he changed any votes, for people here were all in favor of the San Diego proposition before, and his practical views of the matter have but confirmed the previously formed opinions of our people. Gone to Los Angeles.—About forty of our citizens are at Los Angeles, as witnesses on the Davies trial. They have already been there several days and seem likely to be kept some time longer, from reports as to the probable duration of the case. Later—We are advised that the case will probably be far enough advanced to-day to allow the witnesses to return home. House Warming.—On Tuesday evening last about 75 of the friends of Mr David Davis assisted the gentleman in "warming" the very neat residence he has just completed at the northern edge of town. Everybody danced and feasted and had a good time until morning. Our reporter neglected his business in not being present and writing up a better item than this about it, and we should pull his hair for the delinquency but for the fact that he immediately took the precaution to get himself sheared so close that there is nothing to pull. Yesterday's Star states that resolutions were passed at a meeting of the Tax-payers' Union, last Wednesday, "requesting the Directors of the San Diego and Los Angeles Railroad Company to withdraw their proposition from before the voters, so as to better unite their strength against subsidy schemes." San Francisco belles intend to discard corsets and rely upon natural causes for their squeezing hereafter. DIED. In Anaheim. Thursday night October 24th, Mrs D K Williams, in the year of her age. On the 22nd inst. Mrs Elizabeth, wife of Rev John Marquis in the 59th year of her age. NEWSPAPER LAW, 1.
