OLASTER, JOHNSON CO., KANSAS,
Sept. 22, 1873.
Ed. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIAN.
Perhaps you may not object to hear from a reader of your paper, who has just left the fertile plains, and sunny groves (and alkali and sand banks) of Los Angeles, to journey through more rigorous climes, where Nature, though not so lavish, is probably more equitable in the distribution of her gifts; meeting out with even measure to every spot of her creation, not starving portions to render others riotous with good living. Here she is a careful and impartial provider; there she is a prodigal and a spend-thrift.

with good living. Here she is a careful and impartial provider; there she is a prodigal and a spendthrift.
To one who makes the voyage from Los Angeles to San Francisco on so pleasant a steamer as the Orizaba, and under such an efficient officer as Capt. Johnson, even the slight unpleasantness of sea sickness can be suffered with equanimity; yet the voyager is apt to change his "life on the ocean wave" for the securities of "terra firma" with a sensation of relief, and a section in one of the Silver Palace cars of the Central Pacific seems much more substantial and satisfying—more like you were "going somewhere."
Under such circumstances we found ourselves, on the morning of Sept. 6, booked for the five days' journey to Omaha. The ride through the Sacramento valley was oppressive, as is usual at this season of the year, and at dusk, the air and shadows of the Sierra seemed a grateful release to mind and body. To the lover of nature, the scenery of these mountains can never grow tame, however familiar, and as the old objects of interest flit by, the emotions of awe and pleasure are scarcely less strong than those aroused by the novelty of the first trip.
We stopped for breakfast the first morning at Humboldt; thence to Ogden is a section of country from which the weary eye can gain no season of relief from barren hill and alkali plain. To the pulmonary sufferer, this part of the journey is trying in the extreme. The dust, which rises in through the closed windows, is of the most irritating character, rendering breath almost a burden. Breakfast the second morning at Ogden, where we change to the Pullman cars of the U.P.R. The car is superior in arrangement and finish to the Silver Palace, but the officers, we think less courteous and accommodating than those on the California portion of the route; but then these are election times, and it is difficult to deter cars are again resumed destination reached is Ola capital of Johnson County.
The county fair is in progress a failure, few articles for exile and the crowd do not look ed. Three years ago, the park the county were called upon question, which is now the minds, and perhaps the science, of the enfranchised county—the question of Subsidy. They voted a subway taxes now range from five per cent. DISSOLUTION OF CO- PARTNERSHIP
THE co-partnership is now operating in mountain areas in bold singularity; peculiar peaks; the "Devil's Slide," "Devil's Gate" and "Finger Rock," are prominent features, while along the road for a half day winds the Water river, a beautiful mountain stream, suggestive of Eden after the previous day's experience through the alligator.
But again for some changes, and during the afternoon we travel through another section of age brush. Supper at Green river, the only intolerable meal of the route. Passable meals can be obtained throughout the trip at $1.00 each.
The third morning we wake up on the Roofing which afford but few sniffing views. Breakfast at Laramin, one of the prettiest towns on the road. Soon we strike gravel land, and at night a "drink" which continues all the next day, until the character, rendering breath almost a burden. Breakfast the second morning at Ogden where we change to the Pullman car of the U.P.R.R. The car is superior in arrangement and finish to the Silver Palace, but the officers, we think less courteous and accommodating than those on the California portion of the route; but then these are election times, and it is difficult to determine how much disinterestedness may enter into the composition of human motions.
The recovery of the Wasatch mountains, after we leave Ogden, though not so grand as portions of the Sierra, is more varied, possesses more originality. Isolated rocks standing out from mountain sides in bold singularity; peculiar peaks; the "Devil's Slide," "Devil's Gate" and "Finger Rock," are prominent features, while along the road for a half day winds the Water river, a beautiful mountain stream, suggestive of Eden after the previous day's experience through the alligator.

GOVERNOR SALOMON.
Speaking at Planters' Hotel.
His Excellency, E. B. Salomon,
Governor of Washington Territory,
invoked our citizens with a visit on Monday last, and in the evening delivered a very fine political address
at the Planters' Hotel. The speaking would have been at Enterprise Hall but for the fact that a Railroad meeting had been appointed for the same evening at the Planters' and at its conclusion it was deemed too late to get up a separate meeting at the Hall, so the audience were invited into the billiard-room of the Hotel, where Mr. Fischer called an impromptu meeting to order, and introduced the Governor.
Mr Salomon began by premising that public sentiment had so much changed of late from Greeley to Grant that a long speech or elaborate review of the whole political situation was no longer necessary. The first part of his address consisted of an interesting account of
Hotel, where Mr. Fischer called an impromptu meeting to order, and introduced the Governor.
Mr Salomon began by premising that public sentiment had so much changed of late from Greesley to Grant that a long speech or elaborate review of the whole political situation was no longer necessary. The first part of his address consisted of an interesting account of the career of Carl Schurz and the course of the Hon. Senator's disaffection toward the Republican nominees. This disaffection, Mr Salomon claimed was solely from a quarrel with President Grant and others, and disappointment in the failure of objects of his personal ambition. Also that he had by the extreme to which the carried his personalities made a breach between himself and his Republican friends and lost favor during his status in that party. Mr Salomon had held a command during the war, under Mr. Schurz and knew him intimately. Thought that Schurz had mistaken the character of the German American in supposing that they would leave the Republican Party—because one of their old leaders had done so. Speaker was praised of the fact that Germans when they came to America ceased a blind following of leaders and learned to read and think for themselves.
He closed with an eloquent allusion to the bravery and character of the Germans people, to whom he said, and not to King per William he gave the honor of the famous German war. He was so friend of the Knicker, who had shot down his own people in the streets of Berlin, simply because they asked for privileges to which they were just entitled. Thought that our coming election had a deeper significance than the mere success of a party in the United States. Depots in Europe desired the overthrow of the Republican party; the common people hoped for its success as an angury of the perpetual of Republican institutions and a promise of more liberal terms of Government.

Railroad Meeting.
R. L. Peet and Frank Gannah will address the people of Ana and Vicinity on the question of broad Subsidy, in front of the Hotel Thursday evening at 7 o'clock.
A trist of David Devine is proclaiming at Los Angeles, Frank E. Palm and Mason Sparks and are contact for defense.
Report of the railroad meeting any evening is entered out, but persons next issue
Thought that our coming election had a deeper significance than the mere success of a party in the United States. Despite in Europe desired the overthrust of the Republican party; the common people hoped for its success as an anguery of the perpetuity of Republican institutions and a promise of more liberal forms of Government for themselves. Which ever way the contest was decided, it would affect the welfare of the people of Europe as well as of America.
We regret that we cannot follow the speaker further. He is a man of personal experience in the matters which have led to the present singular state of political affairs and his address was of the deepest interest throughout and was frequently and warmly applauded.
A speech was afterwards made by A. A Wilson Esq. of Los Angeles, a more extended notice of which must be deferred till another name.
The Governor left yesterday for Los Angeles to take counsel for San Francisco. He has made no personal friends here who will glad to welcome him again should he ever again drift down into the lower latitudes of California.
Aware of circumstances—With such an fall, Mr. B. Palm must initiate bad his seconds in failing a good manner to titrate the first trial without penalty or prison to his employee.
