These lands are productive, thus the profits of the first crop have paid the entire cost of the land and any industrious man who has sufficient capital, to make his payment and put in his crop, can easily make out of the land, the remainder of his purchase money.

and Southwest. The projected road from San Diego to San Francisco must run directly through the center of our valley that being the only practicable route this road will probably be finished with two years. The two projected overland roads the Texas Pacific and Thirty-fifth Parallel will both be convenient to our valley for either travel or transportation—both will be speedily built as the snow blockade on the present route provided in no other way can the communication overland be kept open during the Winter. Both routes are in the hands of energetic men who have abundant means to carry out their object.
THE MARKETS
For our surplus products are Francisco and San Diego, and while the overland roads are complex each will run through rich mines regions whose population will depend upon us for food, fruits in fact everything they require—aside the Atlantic States will fulfill a ready market for every product that will bear the expense overland transportation.
PRODUCTIONS AND PROFITS.
Oranges and Lemons; begin bear at 9 years from the seed at 15 years at present prices; yielding a profit of $2.000 per Limes commence bearing at 15 years, and are said to be equivitable; Olives commence bearing at seven years, and yield a fit of $200 per acre when 15 years old; they attain a great size; live to a great age; trees 100 years old at San Diego are said to larger, and more productive than in Europe, the crop never fades, and neither blight, nor mildew, the always matures, yields from so to ten tons per acre, they commence bearing at three years; Re-made from our grapes are equal the best imported; Figs produce
To those Who are Seeking Homes.
Editor Southern California.
In your last week's issue I endeavored to give a general description of our valley, and explained why our climate was so healthful and temperate, why with our usually small rainfall our lands were so fertile and productive. I will now proceed to give such information as the class of people for whose benefit I am writing, will naturally desire to obtain, so that they can know beforehand if our climate, soil, and its diversified productions are such as they desire to find.
Land
Within a circle of fifteen miles diameter, of which Anaheim is the center there are some 50,000 acres of land still unsold, comprising every description of soil and adapted to all kinds of productions. The title to these lands is U. S. Patent, and the usual terms upon which they are sold are one-fourth cash, and one-fourth for three years, with an per cent increase with the growth of the tree; Grapes of all varieties, are perfectly healthy; the crop never fails, and neither blight nor mildew, the always matures, yields from a to ten tons per acre, they commence at three years; Rum made from our grapes are equally imported; Figs produce three years, bear two, and crops per year, the drying of fruit, will become an important necessity, and pay a large profit; Peaches and Pears are excellent and the yield is large, and but heretofore have ree'd little tion; Almonds (Languedoc) mence bearing at four years are said to yield double the oranges per acre; English nuts bear at 9 years, and at 19 yield 100 lbs of nuts per tree; teen the yield is 300 lbs. They grow to a great size, the crops fail and the nuts are large of fine flavor, very profitable; Chestnuts have been tried small scale, and do well, the undoubtedly pay; Cotton has tested in an unsuitable loom although most of the crops destroyed by an early frost bolls that escaped were targeted well, and were pronounced experts to be the finest uplands ever seen; the staple wheat than usual, and the fibre as soft as the finest Sea Island; being extensively planted expected to be remarkably creative. Mustard (English remarkably well, and is a perennial—12 to 20 months).
The present price of corn yields from 50 to 120 bushels and 100 bushels is considered an ordinary crop per acre; it suffices when planted on large as the first of July, after the borer has been harvested, thus making two crops in one year from the same ground. Corn yields from 65 to 100 bushels per acre. Barley and oats 60 to 100 bushels per acre. Potatoes yield enormously, and when planted on sandy loam, are of the very finest quality. Sweet potatoes do equally well, and require a similar soil. Alfalfa yields seven or eight crops a year when mown, and when pastured will fatten three head of large cattle, or ten sheep per acre; it grows continuously summer and winter. Alfalfa and barr clover (annuals) are now from one to two feet high, although but two and a half months have elapsed since the sprouting of their seeds, they will continue to grow for two or three months, when they mature, and become the finest natural hay, and in this state are more fattening than when green. After the straw is eaten, the burres of the clover are found to cover the ground to a depth of from one to two inches and are the main resource of cattle, sheep, and horses, in dry years. Stock keep rolling fat upon them each burr contains from five to eight seeds. The natural green pastures on our moist lands are perennial, and are unaffected by dry or wet years, that are the finest dairy lands.

The natural green pastures on our moist lands are perennial, and are unaffected by dry or wet years, they are the finest dairy lands in the world, the climate along the sea coast, where they are principally found, is just the right temperature for the production of the finest quality of butter and cheese. The growth of all kinds of timber is very rapid sycamore, and pepper trees in Anaheim, 12 years old are 18 inches in diameter, locust trees of 8 years 12 inches, one and half inches a year! The valley is sufficient in timber, but at this rate this want will soon be remedied.
For fear of over crowding your columns, and tiring out the patience of your readers, I will defer until next week, what I desire to say further upon this subject.
