Southern Californian. SATURDAY, JANUARY 27 1872 Market Report. Alfred Hollison, trustee, to John Adams; eighty acres in Anaheim Extensive, for $150. A. B Chapman to G. L. Russell; a piece of land in the Santiago de Santa Ana mocha for 1000. Institution or a Loan Anaheim Lodge, No. — I. O. O. E., was instituted last Tuesday afternoon at Z. o'clock, in the Masonic hall, by the s. W. G. M., Wm H. Hill, assisted by D. D. G. M. Henry Wartenberg, and the following members of the Order: Win Pridham N. G.; John C. Brown, P. G.; A. G. Taber, O. L. Minoy, John Osborne V. Wolenstein, John Dollant E. Woodruff J. Cohn, D. Neugek, L. Rocher, H. Stanton, and S. Zergerer. After the institution, the patrons marched to Knodel's Hall, where the following officers were publicly installed in the presence of a large number of ladies and gentlemen: John Focher, N. G.; K. W. Beyond the Santa Ana. This excellent country is swelling up and improving rapidly. Flows are not work all over the plain turning up the old soil. The man have placed his ground in good condition for cultivating a crop. Their sands of sand that never were plowed before are being cultivated now. Illiquided parts already fear that too much grain will be raised, and prices will be low. These are the same men who, a short time ago, knew that it couldn't rain in this country—that we never should raise anything here; and now their great trouble is that produce is likely to be so plausible that it won't bring famine prices in to tall Humanity is hard to please. It must be a very delicate and trying situation to be the Providence over such people as the most of us are. If we are mourned, we growl; if we are happily stunned, we feel bad because our neighbor has just as g of a chance as ourselves, and has no pressing necessities of which we can take advantage. The town of South Ana makes already progress. As new store has been added to its business facilities within the post fortnight. Every body a team to be hammering at something, and adding a little to the general wealth. The hotel is nearly finished. It commands a splendid view of the surrounding country, and must prove a pleasant place if renamed. Personal — One good result of the institution of the Old Fellow's Lodge here on Tuesday last is the better acquaintance with Anaheim... After the institution the participants marched to Kneller's Hall, where the following officers were publicly installed in his presence of a large number of ladies and gentlemen: John Focher, N. G.; K. W. Champlin, V. G.; John P. Zeyn, See; John Adams, Texas. The G. M. delivered an address in which he explained the meaning of the words "Odd Fellow." He said: "It is strange, in a cold and calculating world like ours, where so many walks through life with care heratically sealed against the calls of humanity; encased in a frozen garb that repulses all approach; perishing what lit her heart and soul they own, we say it is Old to see a Society like ours banded together for the benevolent duties we have bound ourselves to perform. Hence, we are Odd Fellow. Learn, then, that to rectify, to correct this setting sin of selfishness is one of the highest aims and objects of our Order. It teaches us that there is but one family, the whole human race, and that we are sent here together the rich and the poor, the haughty and the humble, not as numbers of the earth, but as sharers of each other's bond us. It teaches us that wherever we hear the sigh of sorrow, the mean of the heart broken, the appeal of the destitute or the wail of the miserable, we should be quick in our ministrations of mercy, not passing by on the other side." At 5 o'clock the initiation occurred at the Lodge room, when eighteen new members were added to the Order. The evening was finished by a supper at the Platters Hotel, which was culled by music from the band, and was enjoyed by all. OUTRAOR AT LOS ANGELES—Los Angeles seems to have a very large proportion of racsals among her population, judging from the frequency with which acts of law are performed at Los Angeles. Personal—One good result of the institution of the Old Fellow. Lodge here on Tuesday last is the better acquaintance with Anaheim which our visiting friends have acquired. Among those we met Rev. Win H. Hill of Sacramento now G. M. of the Grand Lodge of California Mr. H. was formerly and still we believe part of the Episcopal Church at Sacramento has been Superintendent of Schools in Sacramento county for several terms and is widely and favourably known throughout the State. It was on good fortune to belong to the Sabath School and class taught by him long ago—in 1800—when we were a boy, just across the plains from "the States." Nobody suspects us now of ever having been a Sunday school boy; but time was, when we were a very well regulated youth, before the cares and perplexities of mature years had caught us the dark ways and vain tricks of human life. Personal—Mr. C. Tustin of Tustin City, one of the most enterprising and valuable men in country possessed, paid us a visit on Wednesday last. Always glad to see such men, they are like men who never stop to whine about hard times, nor wait for something to turn up but manually take hold of something and turn it up. We want more like them. Among our Los Angeles friends who visited us at the installation, we notice Mr. C. L Minor of this Aces; Mr. V. Wollenstein, the popular artist; Win H. Hill Fridlhagen of Walla Walla; Fargo & Co., and Mr. Hester of winger making fame; he did many others whom we have not the pleasure of knowing. From Galleria in art: Mr. Brown, P. G., and Mr. John Dolland, N. G. of the Old Fellow's lodge at that The evening was finished by a supper at the Plaster Hotel, which was enlivened by music from the band, and was enjoyed by all. OUTBACK AT LOS ANGELES—Los Angeles seems to have a very large proportion of raccoons among her population, judging from the frequency with which acts of lawless violence are committed. The Express of the 22d just gives an account of the tarring and feathing of a Mexican Doctor Vasquez, who was lured out upon the pretence of being needed professionally, and then treated in a most shameful manner, for no other reason. It appears, than that the Doctor had married against the wishes of the lady's father. New School District—a new school district, to be called Syracuse More District, is about to be set off from Spring District, south of the Santa Ana River, to accommodate the people of Eustin City. Pamosna—Mr. M. Mitchell, late of the Star, is we learn, about to add his talents to the editorial force of the Express. We congratulate him upon the acquirement. Taucan use—Mr. Brookhain's in now building a house 14 by 30 feet for the Austin Fire Company in the rear of Resurrection Hall, in which he houses the ladder, truck and other apparatus of the Company. NEW FIRE BELL—The new bell ordered for the Fire Company, to take the place of the one first procured, which was deemed too small, has been received, and will soon be placed in position in the hall tower. The bell is of San Francisco make (Garnett & Tray), weighs 19 pounds and measures 25 inches in diameter by 15 inches in length. It has a good tone, and will doubtless prove to be exactly what is wanted for a hell. The town when completed will be about 80 feet high. SANTA ARA HORSE—The local at Santa Ana is nearly completed having been already partially painted. A large quantity of material for it was lost by the staining of the shoe over Carolina Molina, near Santa Ana. A short time later more material is already shipped and will soon be here.
