Southern California. NATURDAY, JANUARY 27, 1872 CWAS. A. GARDNER... E.T.'s & People. Notten. J. C. Hill Jr. is hereby outwardly received subscriptions for the Southern California. Gallatin and Vicinity. We visited Gallatin and "the College" neighborhood on Thursday last and were agreeably surprised to find so large at settlement and so much improvement. The College (sometimes called "Downyville") is two miles West of Gallatin and has the finest store building we have seen in the county, outside of Los Angeles and Anaheim. A first class country store is kept here by Adams & Jacoby. Another store, for general use, is about to be opened by Steele & Co., and material for a drug store, to be opened by Mr. Banks is already on the ground. The College was built several years ago by the people of the settlement and conducted under the auspices of the Southern Meadist Church. It has about 50 pupils, and is a very plain, rough looking building. A fine resemblance is being built by Mr. Adams of Adams & Jacoby, Mr. Sperlock, Presiding Elder of the Circuit, lives in a neat looking cottage near by, and Mr. Spencer has a testily built and comfortable looking residence, between the College and Gallatin. Land is valuable, being worth $100 per acre. The total number of acres required to produce these crops was 1287, and the total value of the 857,000 acres average value per acre was 851.82. This we think is probable farming. It will be seen wheat was by far the leading direct amounting in value to 40 per cent of the whole. The value of wheat crop, only of States mentioned in viz. Pennsylvania, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, the high being Illinois, over twenty-five times. Six States are ahead of the average value per acre ofDUCTS, Massachusetts being highest 832.15. Of our wine or wool nothing of interest is said. Pacific Coast. An organization called it associated Press of Southern California has been formed, for object mutual benefit to the members is composed of the Los Angeles Store, News and Express, and the Diego Union. Land is valuable, being worth $100 per acre for good farms. One remarkable feature of Silver Precinct is the great preponderance of ministers, about 80 of whom we are assured live in the neighborhood; nearly all belong to the Southern Methodist Church. Therefore about 6 doctors. Following is a business directory of Gallatin and the College as compiled by ourselves. BLACKSMITHS Frank Cooper, Manning Broe Boot and Shoe Maker, John C. An amendment is proposed to the Federal Constitution providing that "the public lands of the United States shall not be disposed of except by actual settlers thereon, for homestead purposes only, and in quantities limited by general law." A righteous measure, and it ought to prevail.
