Southern Californian. SATURDAY, JANUARY 27, 1872. Language of the Handkerchief. Drawing across the lips—desirone of getting acquainted. Drawing it across the eyes—I am sorry. Taking it by the centre—we will be friends. Twirling in both hands—indifference. Drawing it across the cheek—I love you. Drawing it across the hands—I hate you. Letting it rest on the right cheek—Yes, Letting it rest on the left cheek—No. Twirling in the left hand—I wish to be full of you. Twirling in the right hand—I love another. Folding it—I wish to speak with you. Flirting it over the right shoulder—Follow me. Opposite corner in both hands—wait for me. Drawing it across the forehead—We are watched. Lifting it to the ear—You are changed. Letting it remain on the ear—You are cruel. Winding it around the forefinger I am engaged. Winding it around the third finger—I am married. Putting it in the pocket—No more at present. Tying a knot in one corner—Don't tell too much. Tying a knot in the middle—Will be trouble, as there are other eyes upon us. Twisting and then doubling—Let us go together. Flirting it over the left shoulder Banks, Etc., Etc. FARMERS' AND MERCHANTS' BANK, OF LOS ANGELES. BANK CAPITAL, - $5 0,000 JOHN G DOWNEY.... Flirting it over the left shoulder You have deceived me. Touching the right eye twice—Repeat your signal. Worn in the belt—Bound to you. Biting it—I am very angry with you. Shaking it slightly—You are a flirt. Holding it up and then dropping it in the lap—Forgive me. Folding and then unfolding it—I have something to tell you. Doubling and striking the left hand with it.—Do not dare. Two distinct shakes—Stay where you are. Clasping it to the heart—I love you to distraction. Waving from both hands—Signal of distress; come and help me. Holding it up without waving—I will wait for you. Touching the lips and then waving—Good-bye, dear. Twisting it around the wrist—I would kiss you if I dared. Placing under the arm, at arm pit—I will dance with you; I will go home with you. [This signal, in fact, implies cordial and close relations of the parties, and as it is so easily given in assemblies without attracting attention, is now used freely to make appointments. I. O. O. Graham Muffins—Two quarts of graham meal, 1 heaping teaspoon of salt, 2 table-spoons of sugar, 1¼ quarts of milk lukewarm, ½ teacup of domestic hop yeast—more if baker's yeast; rise over night, pour in muffin rings or "gems," and bake in a very hot oven. If less of the bran is required, sift the meal and discard the coarser bran left in the sieve. Rough Old Conundrum—Once upon a time when a collision between freight trains occurred at Clipper Gap, one of the passengers in a caboose car was thrown over a stove, and got mixed up with things generally. Regaining his feet, he went for the conductor hastily, and demanded: "What in h- I do you mean by stopping the train this way?" The conductor said, "Give it up." Graham Gems(1)—Five cups of graham meal, 1 teaspoon of salt, 4½ cups of cold milk or water, pour into thoroughly heated "gems," or "cups," and bake in a very hot oven.
