SOUTHERN CALIFORNIAN. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 23, 1871 Market Report. Littlefield Webb & Co. favor us with the following report: San Francisco, Dec. 23d; Fleur 7 37½ to 7 50 per bbl, Rye, advanced, 2 25 per awt, Harley 1 75 to 1 90, Corn 205 to 2,25, Bayou beans 3 25 to 4 25, Castor beans 4 00 to 4 50, Mustard seed yellow 3 00 to 4 00, brown 4 00 to 5 50 dark brown. 3 00 to 4 75; Potatoes, best, 90 to 1 25; Carolinas 1 75 to 2 50: Butter; choicest, 50 to 60; Eggs, fresh. 50 to 52½ Dry hides 18 to 18½; Wool, burry and coarse, 12 to 20; slightly burry 20-22, good shipping 22 to 26; extra choice 27 to 82. A GREAT WRONG—Two gentlemen of this city, Wm. Platt, captain of the Schooner Solano, and H.T. Woodworth, superintendent of the construction of the Planters' Hotel, both well and favorably known in this community, were arrested here this week upon a false charge of having committed a larceny, under the most disreputable circumstances, at Los Angeles. They were kept here overnight, and the next day taken to Los Angeles, where they gave bail upon their arrival, and were not put in jail erroneously stated by the News. Judge Gray, upon hearing a few words of what the prosecuting witness had to relate, saw at once that the whole charge was utterly groundless, and honorably discharged both gentlemen, the attorneys for the prosecution fully agreeing with his honor in the decision. This false arrest and imprisonment was bad enough, and sufficiently mortifying to a sensitive mind but to add insult to the injury. Building Statistics—Mr. Dimock favors us with the following which is a very gratifying exhibit of the growth and progress of Anaheim, showing that in spite of all drawbacks buildings to the value of $65,000 have been erected in this city during the year just drawing to a close: Value of those of my own construction are.....In 1869,$15,500 " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " Total, My estimate of value of other buildings are.....In 1869,$4,500 " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " ...1870,18,000 " * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Total, Grand Total,$111,000 HUMBUGS.—We are continually receiving requests from such publications as the Star Spangled Banner, “New York Observer.” “Demorest’s Monthly” “People’s Journal” and many others, to advertise them, for nothing, or rather what is, to us, equivalent to nothing, a subscription to their publications. They modestly ask an advertisement worth $60 per annum for a subscription of $1 in greenbacks. To a newspaper man who has not less than 100 exchanges per week more than he can read, this is refreshingly cool, and cheeky. The fool-killer can do a lively business yet among those newspaper quacks, away down East. PHOTOGRAPHING.—The perfection to which this beautiful art is being brought is something surprising. Wolfenstein, at Los Angeles, has on exhibition samples of his work that are marvels of perfection and beauty, and would almost persuade erroneously stated by the News. Judge Gray, upon hearing a few words of what the prosecuting witness had to relate, saw at once that the whole charge was utterly groundless, and honorably discharged both gentlemen, the attornies for the prosecution fully agreeing with his honor in the decision. This false arrest and imprisonment was bad enough, and sufficiently mortifying to a sensitive mind, but to add insult to the injury already done, the Los Angeles News and the Evening Express have reported the affair in an entirely false light, giving the public to understand that these gentlemen visited a low baglio, called for drinks, and, in the temporary absence of the proprietor, stole an album valued at $50 and $10 in coin, and that finally they only escaped conviction by a "conflict of testimony." No blame is attached to the officer making the arrest. School Examination.—The examinations of the Anaheim public schools for the close of the fall term, were held on Thursday and Friday of this week, and made a most satisfactory showing of the results of the half-year's study. The scholars exhibited a remarkable proficiency in Grammar, Arithmetic and Geography, and were fully up to the average in other studies. Mr. Guinn and Miss Marquis deserve much credit for the constant, and unwearied attention to their duties which is evidenced by these examinations. A class from the Primary Department will be promoted to the Grammar school at the beginning of next term. A vacation of two weeks now follows and school will re-commerce on Monday, January 8th 1872. A Serenade.—We were complimented with a serenade by the Anaheim Band on Monday evening last, for which we return thanks. Music is a genius of inspiration under any circumstances, but when it speaks the kindly appreciation and friendship of one's fellow men, it is doubly grateful to the heart. The evening was passed pleasantly with the choice selections from the band's repertoire alternated with the drinking of champagne. This band, which is one of the most praiseworthy of our local institutions, is more than he can read, this is refreshingly cool, and cheeky. The fool-killer can do a lively business yet, among those newspaper quacks, away down East. Photographing.—The perfection to which this beautiful art is being brought is something surprising. Wolfenstein, at Los Angeles, has on exhibition samples of his work that are marvels of perfection and beauty, and would almost persuade a party to have his picture taken, merely to see what a good looking fellow he can be made to be. Mr. W. has recently enlarged his gallery, added new sky-lights, and is doing any amount of first class work. Rain.—We had a slight sprinkle and strong indicationes of a big rain on Sunday and Monday last; but after blowing around all day and merely drizzling a little it disappeared all by going off to rain somewhere else. But on Thursday quite a respectable little rain fall occurred, and now as we go to press the sky is overcast, clouds are skurrying around and we are hopeful of much agua. The Same Man.—The individual David Thompson, who was recently arrested for robbing the contribution box at the Episcopal Church, Los Angeles is said to be the same rascal who fired the Planter's House in this city several months ago. He was also conspicuous in robbing Chinaman at the Los Angeles riot. Mocking Birds.—Hon. B. D. Wilson our Senator at Sacramento has introduced a bill for an "Act to prevent the capture and destruction of mocking birds in Los Angeles county," and it was referred to the Committee on Agriculture. The birds owe the Hon. Senator a serenade and doubtless he will get it. The Wine Market.—We are happy to learn that the wine market has much improved since the harvest, Anaheim and Los Angeles white wines now commanding from 30 to 35 cents per gallon in San Francisco. Angelica brings 50 to 60 cents. This is gratifying as showing an increased value of our products. Band on Monday evening last, for which we return thanks. Music is a genius of inspiration under any circumstances, but when it speaks the kindly appreciation and friendship of one's fellow men, it is doubly grateful to the heart. The evening was passed pleasantly with the choice selections from the band's repertoire alternated with the drinking of champagne. This band, which is one of the most praiseworthy of our local institutions, is now in excellent condition and numbers six members, as follows: Andrew Greety, leader; E. A. Pullen, cornet; Geo. Sippel, clarionet; Geo Engelhardt, baritone; Harry D'Assonville, 1st alto; John Luedke, 2d alto. LECTURE TO-MORROW.—Mr. Howe, of New Westminster, hands us the following notice: John M. Howe, teacher and investigator for more than half a century, solicits an interview with the citizens of Anaheim of all classes, especially young ladies and gentlemen, for the purpose of discussing the great subject of Education or the right cultivation of immortal germs. Mr. Howe proposes to deliver his first stricture on the theme, "What is a child? What is its origin and destiny?" on Sunday next, at 3 o'clock P.M., at the Public school room of Anaheim. All interested in our national school system are invited to take part in the discussion. COMMITTEE MEETING.—The Committee, consisting of John W. Clark, E. H. Boyd, Wm. Rubbottom, A. L. Bush and Chas. A. Gardner, who were appointed by the President of the County Division Meeting to revise the bill to go before the Legislature for the division of Los Angeles county, and make any needed amendments thereto, are requested to meet at Anaheim on Saturday, Dec. 30th, 1871, and consult together upon the business before them.
