SOUTHERN CALIFORNIAN. SATURDAY DECEMBER 22, 1871 Chas. A. Gardner; ... Ed'r & Prep' Notice J. C. Hill Jr. is hereby authorized to remit subscriptions for the Southern Californian. County Division. The meeting at Enterprise Hall on the 20th inst., was well attended, about 50 gentlemen being present, representing the various portions of the proposed new county. Dr. J. E. Fulton was called to the Chair and Chas. A. Gardner named as Secretary. Some of the petitions for county division which have been in circulation were returned with an aggregate of 600 signatures, and some half dozen others, not yet returned, will, it is thought, swell the number to over a thousand. Judge Edward Evey of Anaheim was named as the choice of the meeting for representing the interests of the movement in the State Legislature. The following committees were appointed: For collecting funds to defray the expenses of the delegate to Sacramento, L. C. Pollard, John Dollan, E. H. Boyd and S. G. Reynolds, of Gallatin; W. R. Olden, of Anaheim; A. L. Bush, of Santa Ana; Richard Egan, of Capistrano; J. M. Fryer and Wm. Rubottom of San Jose, Converse Howe, of Westminster, and Newton Dutcher, of Azusa. Committee to revise the Bill for County Division, as published in the late People's Advocate, and make any needed amendments thereto, A. L. Bush, E. H. Boyd, Wm. Rubbottom, Jno-W. Clark and Charles A Gardner. The collection committee were instructed to report to the committee on ways and means by the 3rd day of January next. The committee on ways and means were empowered to appoint some suitable person to represent us at Sacramento, in case Judge Evey should not accept the mission. The meeting adjourned to re-assemble at Gallatin on the 3rd day of January, 1872, at noon. Death of Judge Morrison Hon. Murray Morrison, District Judge for the 17th Judicial District died on the night of the 18th inst. at his home in Los Angeles. He was 51 years of age, an old resident of Los Angeles and had been a member of the State Assembly in 1861. He was appointed District Judge by Gov. Haight upon the creation of the 17th Judicial District, four years ago, and was elected to the same position by the people at the election in Nov., 1869. Death of John King John King, one of the pioneer American residents of Los Angeles, died at Tell's Sea Retreat on the 20th inst. Mr. King was one of the proprietors of the Bella Union Hotel and has held many important positions of trust and honor in Los Angeles. Deeds. FREIGHT TRAIN.-A team passed through town last from San Jose, bound ing for lumber. FLAG STAFF.-Mr. F procured a flag staff 60 which is to be set at the Planter's Hotel. The Breakwater—The work on the Wilmington Breakwater is being seriously impaired by strong currents which tear up piles driven to a depth of 14 feet. Cribs are being sunk to deaden the effect of the currents. "Not for Joseph."—The woman's suffrage convention held at Sacramento lately repudiate Grant for President in 1872. "Kase for why." "He has failed to recommend" &c. The Vacant Judgeship.—A. Branson-Esq., is spoken of as the probable successor of the late Murray Morrison on the Judicial Bench of the 17th District. San Francisco is to be made the actual terminus of the C. P. R. R. The road is to cross the bay by bridge at Raywood. Wm. M. Tweed was arrested in New York on the 17th inst. and released on $50,000 bail, with E. Sands as sole bondman. Flag Staff.—Mr. Frox procured a flag staff which is to be set at the Planter's Hotel.
