How Pulling Fodder Attains Corn.
In all the Southern States, the farmers generally pull the blades from their corn stalks to be used as long forage, but in Kentucky it is the custom of their farmers to cut the stalks with all the blades and corn on, and then dry it for stock. A farmer in Tennessee has experimented on pulling the blades and leaving it on, and he came to the conclusion that when he pulled his fodder he lost in weight in corn. Here is his statement:
"I selected for the purpose a piece of rich alluvial land, which had been cultivation for fourteen years without manure, but subject to overflow by backwater, and measured seventy square yards. The corn was planted on the last of March, ground plowed ten inches deep, rows five feet apart, three feet in drill, hoed and plowed three times after planting; the fodder of every second row I pulled when ripe, and it weighed 210 pounds when perfectly cured. The crop was gathered on the 22d of September, and produced in all forty-one bushels and one peck, that is to say, the corn from which the fodder was pulled, twenty and one-quarter bushels, and that from which no blades were taken, twenty-one bushels; but the difference in weight was still greater, the first weighing fifty-eight pounds, and the latter sixty-four pounds per bushel. We find the difference in weight to be 170 pounds of corn in favor of that from which the fodder was not pulled. This is just about three bushels of good shellled corn gained on the half acre by leaving the blades on the fodder. That on which the blades were left would reasonably mature and dry more slowly than the other, and therefore would reasonably weigh more soon after gatheirng.
Again, the pulling of the blades on every other row admits the sun and air more freely, and possibly assisted the alternate rows on which the blades were not pulled to a plumper grain. These

Again, the pulling of the blades on every other row admits the sun and air more freely, and possibly assisted the alternate rows on which the blades were not pulled, to a plumper grain. These minor details affect the result to some extent doubtless, but yet the indication is the same, that in saving the blades for fodder, we lose an equivalent weight of corn."—Trade Journal.
A SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERY.—It is reported that a physician in Australia has discovered a way of distinguishing human blood from the blood of other animals. It is wonderfully simple, and is thus described: "A small drop, not a mere speck, of the blood is to be placed upon a microscopic slide, and carefully watched, at a temperature of fifty-four to fifty-nine degrees Fahrenheit, until the picture of network formed by its coagulation is developed. Human blood speedily breaks up into a small pattern network; the blood of other animals takes a longer time and makes a larger pattern: but the blood of every animal seems to form a characteristic picture."
Among the valuable papers destroyed by the Chicago fire was the original copy of the Emancipation Proclamation by President Lincoln, for which the Historical Society of Chicago paid $25,000.
