ANAHEIM GAZETTE. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 14 1871 DESTRUCTION OF THE CITY OF CHICAGO BY FIRE!!! 7,000 LIVES LOST!!! [From our Extra of the 11th inst.] Anaheim October 11th 1871 The Los Angeles Star of today contains the following and news of a great national calamity: Chicago, October 9. The whole business portion of this city is in ashas; from Harrison street north to Chicago avenue, and east of the river to the lake. The burnt district embraces three miles in length, and from one mile to a mile and a half in breadth. Every Hotel, Bank, Theatre, Express office, Newspaper office, Telegraph office, with all the wholesale houses in the city are totally destroyed. Many thousand dwellings and the Water Works are destroyed…… The flames swept through the city with the rapidity of a prairie fire, and many must have perished.. It is reported that from six to seven thousand lives are lost. The fire is still raging, and the wind blowing a hurricane. Chicago, October 10—Noon. — The railroads east and south are sending no trains out this afternoon. The incoming trains are all behind time, owing to fires in the woods and on the prairies. This street is two miles south of the southern fire limit on the south side, and but little less than that from the fire limit on the west side. It has been set on fire for the purpose, evidently, of destroying the remaining part of the city, largely occupied by wealthy citizens. It is known that two men caught in the act of firing buildings have been shot, and two others were led off with ropes around their necks. As the wind is still blowing a perfect gale the end cannot be foretold. Oct. 9, 12:45 A.M. — To-night is the most awful in the annals of the city... The engines appear almost powerless. Fire Marshal Williams has telegraphed to Milwaukee for all the steamers they can spare. San Francisco, Oct. 10. The following telegram was sent this morning: San Francisco, Oct. 10. — To Lyman Trumbull and John A. Logan. Chicago: The Chicago calamity is a national loss Congress should promptly refund and remit all duties and taxes on goods destroyed. The Government should freely aid in every other way. Almost everybody [Here all the wires gave out, they are supposed to have been burned down in Chicago] It is stated that Pacific Coast insurance companies alone lose $4,000,000. A public meeting was held at San Francisco to take measures for the relief of the sufferers. City Council Proceedings. Finance Committee returned with their approval Report of City Attorney regarding the collection of delinquent taxes, requesting the Deputy City Attorney to further give his attention to the same. Report adopted and put on file. The Finance Committee was granted further time, to report on bill of Mitchell & Gibson. President Zeyn requested further time, to report on the purchase of buckets and ladders; granted. The reports of the Hon Mayor, of Treasurer and Marshal for month of September were received and referred. The following bills were presented and referred to Finance Committee of Q.P. Lehman for boarding prisoners $72, of T. T. Hill for services as Marshal in September $25, of same for boarding prisoners and taking insane prisoner to Los Angeles $25,50, of Arnold & Baldwin of $4,25 and $50 for repairing Jail Door. On motion, the City Marshal was instructed to make Indian prisoners work on the public street.
