From all this facts may be de1. That opinions should not be when there is a prevailing epistle.

Writing on Newspapers — The following is the Act of Congress to writing upon newspapers or periodicals sent by mail, and of interest to many who have in to the habit:

The Origin of Free Masonry.
According to the best authorities the order had its origin among operated masons in the early part of the nineteenth century. It sprung from the difficulty of finding enough men of skill in any one country of Europe to build the cathedrals and other ecclesiastical structures of that period. To obviate this difficulty skillful men from various countries formed a fraternity of architects and builders or masons, and they traveled from country to country, as their services were required. They encamped in tents or huts by themselves, and trained regulations for their own government, according to the peculiar circumstances of their occupation, and the itingent lives they were called to lead. They styled themselves "free" because they were at liberty to work whenever they chose. Many of the public buildings of England, in the Gothic style, were created by men in companies of this sect; and it is quite reasonable to suppose, as some distinguished historians have done, that the institution of speculative Freemasonry was derived from this professional brotherhood of traveling architects and artisans. They doubtless had signs and tokens and emblems by which they might know one another, and which tended to promote mutual assistance and good fellowship.

When and where the order of Masonry was first introduced into the United States appears to be a matter of some doubt, even among the best informed of the fraternity, and the fact that prior to the year 1717 lodges were not compelled to keep any regular record, leaves no authentic data whereby to trace its origin. It is generally conceded, however, that Masonry in the United States dates from the year 1733 when the Right Honorable and Most Worshipful Anthony, Lord Viscount Montague, Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of England, on application of several brethren residing in New England appointed and constituted the Right Worshipful Henry Price as Provincial Grand Master over all the lodges in New England, who on the 80th of July, 1733 constituted the First Grand Lodges of Freemasons ever opened on the American continent. This was known as St. John's Grand Lodge, which title it retained until it was omitted in 1792 with the grand lodge founded by the Earl of Dalhousie. Grand Master of Scotland, of which Gen. Jos Warren, who felt at the battle of Bunker Hill, was the first Grand Master in the United States. He was a successful drygoods merchant, and is generally looked upon as the father of Masonry in the United States. The Order rapidly spread, and before the end of the last century a number of the States boasted of their Grand Lodges and Grand Commanderies.
George Washington was a member of the Masonic fraternity for nearly a century. He was initiated on the 4th of November, 1753, a few months before attaining his majority, in the Fredricksburg Lodge. During the revolutionary war he was a frequent visitor to the Army Lodge, and in 1778 when the Grand Lodge of Virginia was formed, he was chosen Grand Master, but declined the position. In 1788, Alexander Lodge, at Alexandria, Va., was chartered and General Washington became its first master, and was one of its members at the time of his death. The Lodge still preserves his apron, gavel and other tools of the Father of the Country," among its sacred treasures.
Our City as a commercial center.
Any one at all acquainted with the geographical position of our city and the extent of the agricultural land in this county cannot fail to see that our position is far from being a commercial center, situated as we find it in one corner of the county, near the ocean, scarcely a dozen miles away while to the southeast the national highway extends for more than forty miles. How are we over the unnatural position? Some think hereby erecting state landings, that would scarcely be out of place in Bremen, not for a moment stinking of the dismantled murders that are continually coming to nair from those who are thus just taxed. Notwithstanding the heavy taxes that for years have been collected, there is not a bridge no county worth by the name. The road it expanded at all, accompanied by high leading from the north direct to this city, and will be of no benefit to other portions of the county. If our city is normalized and unimproved perhaps we just to the south of the country by doing so will allow us to enjoy health and prosperity.
