SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 30. 1871
The Next Legislature.
According to the latest returns the next Assembly will consist of fifty-seven Republicans; twenty-two Democrats and one Independent. As near as can be ascertained, the Senate will have twenty-one Democratic and nineteen Republican members. A successor to Mr. Pacheco must yet be elected, and will probably be a Democrat. According to these figures the Republicans will have a majority of twenty-eight on joint ballot.—San Diego Union.
SANTA ANA WELL — The workmen have now reached a strata of gravel. They have already secured a flow of water which runs over the top of the well, and forms quite a stream outside. The well is a success, but Mr. Spurgeon is going lower down in hopes of getting a larger stream and a more powerful head of water.
Another school — The residents of the Williams settlement having formed a new school district, called, we believe, Newport District, have voted a tax of $700 for the purpose of building a school house. When we see so many new schools, districts forming and school houses built, as we have recorded within the last few months, we are filled with hope that another year will show a material reduction in this per centage of schoolchildren in the county.
The Star announces various buildings just building or completed in Los Angeles at an aggregate cost of over $55,000. Good showing for that city.

A few months of position, releasing them from the burden of high freight and passenger charges, has totally unified their mind for paying $18 passage and $6 per tfreight, no, believing that the gods help those who help themselves, they have made arrangements to charter a sailing vessel to bring down a cargo from San Francisco.
The refusal of the steamship Co. carry powder or gasoline as freight, the immediate cause of the movement.

Correction — In an item concerning the Los Nietos school election in issue of the 10th inst., we did the ties the injustice of intimating that voting for the tax had no taxable property whereas the fact is, as we have recently learned, that those favoring tax were heavy taxpayers and probably represent as much wealth as they oppose.
