ANAHEIM GAZETTE. SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 30 1871 Society in India. Every now and then Indian society gets into a state of chaos. Nobody knows "who's who," and darkness comes over courts and drawing rooms. Who's who is, of course, determined by the Service test; and when owing to the remodelling of departments, the redistribution of civil and military offices, or what not, there arises a doubt as to relative rank," the most awful consequences follow. The hostess at a dinner party will be at her wits' end to get her guests from the drawing-room into the dining-room without an ementee; and that object accomplished—of course unsatisfactorily—she may expect to find barricades thrown up in the hall to prevent the departure of some inferior star before that of a leading luminary. Ladies are, of course, the great difficulty; and it is certainly not cheerful. except from a indifferent point of view, to see a couple of burra bee bees, each dragging her cavalier after her running a race to the door for the establishment of precedence. The only people who see their way out are non-official people—they have the advantage of the blind girl Nyolia in the "Last Days of Pompeii" who would lead her friends into safety when darkness had fallen upon the city. For the rest, it is very difficult to assign the pass between say, two such apparent analogous persons as an assistant adjutant general of Queen's forces' daughter and an officiating agent's deputy's wife. There appear to have been difficulties of the kind of late in India; for we find—as always comes to pass every few years—that a new table of precedence has just been issued by authority. The document is dated Windsor Castle, headed 'Victoria.' &c., in the usual form, and is signed "Argyll." It sets forth that representations having been made to her Majesty that it is advisable to regulate the rank and precedence of per- forces daughter and an officiating opium agent's deputy's wife. The document is dated Windsor Castle, headed 'Victoria.' &c., in the usual form, and is signed "Argyll." It sets forth that representations having been made to her Majesty that it is advisable to regulate the rank and precedence of persons holding appointments in the East Indies, her Majesty does so "in order to fix the same and prevent all disputes." Then follows a particularized and generalized list, the former beginning with the Viceroy and the latter ending with the grades of officials who are to rank with subattorneys in the army; with some useful reservations on account of persons not included in the various descriptions, and a special provision for ladies having precedence in England. Every means has been taken in fact for the restoration of Cosmos to society in India and the consequent cooling of a kind of atmosphere which punkah fail to effect. Transportation. The N. P. T.
