The Buying and Selling of Votes
We are pleased to see that Judge Sepulveda in his late charge to the Grand Jury seizes this moral but firmly by the horns and recommends that body to give the subject their particular attention. His Honor uses the following pointed language: "Gentlemen of the Grand Jury;—I would be untrue to my duty did I fail to bring to your attention, in a special manner, an evil which is growing and spreading in an alarming degree—an evil which threatens the purity of our political institutions—which is supping the morality of our citizens, and which, at no remote time, is calculated to place our government in the unutterably disgraceful position of the Roman Empire, which, at one time, was sold to the highest bidder. I refer to the buying and selling of votes, and the corruptions attending our elections.
If, to instill in the minds of men moral principles, contributes to their happiness in social life no less essential is it to their political integrity to incubate healthy ideas, and impress them with the necessity of keeping ever pure the exercise of the right of ruffrage thereby avoiding the mal-administration of public affairs, the elevation of unworthy men to office, and the train of evils which ensue from it.
The example afforded by corrupt practices at elections is debauching the rising generation, and the social as well as the political fabric resents it profoundly. The evil is assuming such a magnitude, that it becomes the imperative duty of all who have anything to do with the administration of criminal justice to interfere, and with vigor School Election at Lo

Election in San Diego
Politics appear to be there. From the Union owe gather the following votes were cast Haight Houghton 6 ahead of Arc Rep. for joint Senator had but was beaten by the vardino County. The example afforded by corrupt practices at elections is debauching the rising generation, and the social as well as the political fabric resents it profoundly. The evil is assuming such a magnitude, that it becomes the imperative duty of all who have anything to do with the administration of criminal justice to interfere, and with vigor and without fear to interpose their authority to redeem society from the danger it is in. The law, it is true, is not sufficiently ample in its provisions, and additional legislation is required to reach all the bad practices which occur at elections; nevertheless, some of the offences which are committed at those times are certainly airenable to the law. It is your duty to advise in the matter, and extend your arm so as to arrest, as far as the law allows you, the increase of such immorality. I trust you will be faithful to your mission, and contribute with your legal action to vindicate the laws of the land, to give tone and morality to the masses, and in that manner make our institutions what we all desire them to be—the result of a free, moral, and enlightened political effort.
We hope, for the fair fame of American institutions, that the suggestions of that commendable charge may be fully carried out. To the end that our Republicanism and our Democracy be not brought into contempt among the nations of the earth, that the good name of the United States of America come not to be a by word and reproach among those who are jealous of her prosperity, we should see that the purity of the ballot box is kept inviolate, and that he who buys or sells a vote be promptly punished as an enemy to his country.
BANANA TREE.—We have been shown two magnificent specimens of the Banana tree, grown in the Nursery of Mr. T. E Schmidt. One of the trees has a stem about eighteen inches long, which is bung with a finely developed bunch of bananas; numbering about forty in the cluster. The other tree is still partly bloom, but is fast changing its flowers into fruit, and will ere long prove more productive than the one first spoken of, as it contains at present al-
two magnificent specimens of the Banana tree, grown in the Nursery of Mr. T. E. Schmidt. One of the trees has a stem about eighteen inches long, which is bung with a finely developed bunch of bananas; numbering about forty in the cluster. The other tree is still partly bloom, but is fast changing its flowers into fruit, and will ere long prove more productive than the one first spoken of, as it contains at present almost as many bananas, besides a vast quantity of buds.
We understand that this valuable and delicious article of fruit, was planted last year, and is therefore only a little over a year old when it commences to bear. Mr. Schmidt has in cultivating this new fruit exceeded his most sanguine expectations, as he did not anticipate such successful results, from what he designed only as an experiment. It is evident from the above facts, that all tropical fruits will propagate and flourish here, as luxuriantly as in their native clime; and that too, with little trouble or expense.
We are reliably informed by an old Brazilian, that this specimen of the family of the Plantain tree, is fully as fine in growth and beauty, as any ever raised in the region of the Equator.
We believe that these Banana trees are the pioneers of this county, and challenge competition—this side of the San Gabriel—anyway!
The Star says: Recent arrivals from San Francisco, state that there is no doubt that the Wm. Taber (opposition steamer), will resume her trips between San Diego and San Francisco, in a very short time.
