THE FIRST PAPER MILL — The American Newspaper Reporter gives the following account of the first paper mill in this country:
The first paper mill in America was directed by William Rittinghuysen who emigrated from Holland in the year 1690, and in the same year, in company with William Bradford, a well-known printer, established a mill in Boxborough, near Philadelphia.
This mill was situated on a stream which empties into the Seuhylkill, and which was called "Paper Mill Run," a name which it bears to this day. The paper was made from linen rags, and most of it was used by the junior partner in his own printing business. Nine years afterwards Bradford leased his part of the mill to W. & N. Rittenhouse, for a term of ten years, upon the following terms: That they should pay "ye full quantity of seven ream of printing paper, two ream of good writing paper, and two of blue paper yearly." It was not until 1710 that the second paper mill was erected in America and German town, Pennsylvania, was chosen as the location. It was started by William De Were, a brother-in-law of the Rittenhouse, who was connected with the first mill. A year afterward, the tax-makers of Queen Anne deemed the article of sufficient importance to tax.

THE PACAN TREE.—The Southern Farmer, Memphis, Tenn., says: This tree can be grown as readily as a hickory nut or walnut. Why not grow them as a profitable crop?
We have seen trees in bearing on our friend R. Whitfield's place in Hinda county, Mine., on high upland, and certainly some of our "swamp" planters can grow them around their homesteads, have a pretty lawn, yet make money by the operation. Select best Texas pecans largest and thinnest shells, and plant in December, January or February. By transplanting carefully every two years (out off tap-root first year), for two or three times they will fruit in eight or ten years and when fifteen years old will bear a bushel each; when fully matured, one or two barrels of the best, worn generally $20 to $30 per barrel. Plant, say thirty feet apart, and leave to your children a snug income.
Preserving Grapes.—There is no trouble in keeping grapes through the winter as fresh as when mist gathered. In gathering for keeping fresh, they should be allowed to hang on the vine until they are fully ripe, and then gathered with care to avoid bruising. The nearest bunches should be chosen to put away, and with spair of small sesars all defective and bruised berries should be cut off. They should then be put in boxes well ventilated, and remain for a few days, when they should be packed in boxes, holding six or eight pounds each, first sprinkling the bottom with a layer of mahogany sawdust, or what is better, turning chips, then a layer of grapes, and then sawdust alternately to the top. It is not important that the box be tight; it is better that it should not be. These should be put in the coolest place in the house, where the air is dry.
