ANAHEIM GAZETTE: SATURDAY, AUGUST 26, 1871. NOTICE. Los Angeles candidates wishing to be announced in the Anaheim 'Gazette' can arrange to do so by calling on Mr. W. J. Brodrick. Plant Trees!! A fine forest tree may be grown much sooner than we usually imagine. A pear illustration of this fact is seen at the vineyard of Mr. T. B. Schmidt, in this city who in 1863 started a growth of poplars with just one small sprig which he describes as not larger than his little finger. From this he was able in the following year to get about thirty others and now, from that one slip in 1863, there is a beautiful row of trees many of which are seventy-five feet in height, and extending, at intervals of twenty feet, entirely around a forty-acre lot. These trees can now be seen from a distance of several miles in either direction from Anaheim and form one of the most notable landmarks between the ocean and mountains. Mr. Schmidt estimates their present value for fuel alone, at from $8.0 to $10. each. It may be urged that many are not able to buy trees to set out, but any one can at least do as Mr. Schmidt has done and raise them from the start. It may be urged that many are not able to buy trees to set out, but any one can at least do as Mr. Schmidt has done and raise them from the start. The Australian Gum Tree is an evergreen, flourishes in this climate, and is a rapid grower, attaining a height of fifty feet in five years, and has been known to reach the enormous length of 480 feet. The pepper is evergreen, is a beautiful shade tree and with us the seeds or ships are easy to procure. The locust is a favorite with many. The acacia grows very fast and is easily started, young trees being often found "volunteering" where the seed has drifted or blown. Of the fruit and nut trees, walnut, lemon, orange, fig, olive, almond and dozens of other varieties are common with us and can always be had. Some of these are immensely valuable, an acre of full bearing walnuts being estimated to be worth $2500 per year at present prices. Another potent argument in favor of planting trees is the fact that they cause more rain to fall than will be found on a treeless plain, and this reason is a particularly good one in a climate which like ours is liable to drought. It is certain that vegetation induces moisture and the higher the trees, the more likely to form a nucleus for clouds. An Englishman living on one of the Sandwich Islands planted 50,000 forest trees, as an experiment, to see if they could attract rain from the clouds that passed over the island, but never dropped a particle of water. About the second or third year, moisture, and occasional showers commenced to visit the locality, and about the fifth year regular rains, which have continued to fall ever since. They are grown in rows like orchard trees and when one is cut down the ground is carefully cleared of the roots and a new tree set out. In the countries of the old world natural forests are very scarce and the people have to renew the growth by cultivation. The next generation in the United States may have to resort to the same expedient. There is something noble and beautiful in a tree. It is not only its intrinsic value that commends it to our admiration but its aspiring stature, seeming to spurn the low things of earth; and rising up gracefully toward the heavens it teaches man a constant lesson by pointing ever upward. Rodriguez; await to convey certain lands in the Santiago de Sta Ana, for $3,262. New Advertisements. Irrigating Vineyards. The wine growers of the northern counties of this state do not irrigate their vineyards. We have been told by scientific men of Napa County whose wines command an unusually high price in the market, that it would win the flavor and reputation of those wines to allow any more than the natural supply of water to come upon the vines. They regard the extra amount of juice which the grape is thus given as deleterious to its quality. In that excellent journal, the Wine and Fruit Reporter we find also the following remarks upon this subject: "There can be no question that there has been great injury done to our vineyards by flooding and irrigation, and those journals that advocate such a system have but little knowledge of the nature and wants of the vine, or what is required to grow delicious grapes or make rich wine. A great fact stands out prominent before all cultivators of the vine, and that is every wet season we have, vineyards are troubled with mildew, the grapes blast, fruit is mostly lost, and the wine that is made is poor and insipid. Whereas, our dry years, like the present, the crops double up, the fruit is larger, better, more of it, and the wine has a rich bouquet and delicious flavor. The harvest of grapes this year will be the largest ever known and the best, and this is a dry year. How can the advocates of irrigation deny our position—that irrigation or free watering is injurious?" Special Notices. Notice.
