CHEMICALS, PERFUMERY; &C., &C., &C.. Our Governors From an article in the Sacramento Reporter we collate the following facts: Since the inauguration of the State Government, California has had ten Governors, who served in the order named: Peter H. Burnett, John McDougal, John Bigler, J Neely Johnson, John B. Weller, Milton S. Latham, John G. Downey, Leland Stanford, Frederick F. Low and H. H. Haight. Two of these were accidental Governors—McDougal and Downey; the former taking the place of Burnett, who resigned to enjoy the calm of private life, and Downey taking the chair of Latham, who gave up the same in order to accept a seat in the United States Senate. Burnett, McDougal, Bigler, Weller, Latham, Downey, and Haight were elected by the Democratic party; Stanford and Low by the Republicans, and Johnson by the Americans, or Know Nothings. One Republican (Low), and one Democrat (Haight) have been elected since the change in the Constitution making the official term of the Governor four years instead of two. Only one Governor—Bigler (Democrat)—has been elected a second time. The State Government has been in operation for nearly twenty-two years. It has been administered by the Democratic party for fourteen years, by the Republicans for six years; by the Americans, or Know Nothings, for two years. Of the ten Governors who have served the State, only one—McDougal—has gone to the waveless shore." ENTERPRISE HARD SALOON, Sales Street, Anaheim, Cal. MELROSE ... Proprietors. Only one Governor—Bigler (Democrat)—has been elected a second time. The State Government has been in operation for nearly twenty-two years. It has been administered by the Democratic party for fourteen years, by the Republicans for six years; by the Americans, or Know Nothings, for two years. Of the ten Governors who have served the State, only one—McDougal—has gone to the "waveless shore." Five of the above named, Burnett, Bigler, Johnson, Latham, and Stanton, were elected from Sacramento. Downey was from Los Angeles; Low from Yuba; and Haight from Alameda. We forget where Weller and McDougal resided. We think the latter lived in San Francisco. If not, the metropolis has never furnished a Governor, although she has captured several ex-Governors. Letters or Recommendation. A gentleman advertised for a boy to assist him in his office, and nearly fifty applicants presented themselves to him. Out of the whole number he in a short time selected one and dismissed the rest. "I should like to know," said a friend, "on what ground you select that boy, who had not a single recommendation?" "You are mistaken," said the gentleman, "he had a great many. He wiped his feet, when he came in, and closed the door after him, showing that he was careful. He gave up his seat instantly to that lame, old man, showing he was kind and thoughtful. He took off his cap when he came in, and answered my questions promptly and respectfully, showing he was polite and gentlemanly. He picked up the book which I had purposely laid upon the floor, and replaced it on the table, while all the rest stepped over it or shoved it aside; and he waited quietly for his turn instead of pushing and crowding, showing that he was honest and orderly. When I talked with him, I noticed that his clothes were carefully brushed, his hair in nice order, and his teeth as white as milk; and when he wrote his name, I noticed that his finger nails were clean, instead of being tipped with jet, like that handsome little fellow's in the blue jacket. Don't you call those letters of recommendation? I do and would give more for what I can tell about a boy by using my eye ten minutes, then all the fine letters he can bring me." — The Little Corporal The Australian Gum Tree. The Eucalyptus or Australian gum tree is an Australian evergreen tree and more nearly resembles the Australian acacia in general habits of growth than any other tree that we can compare it to. There are as many varieties and peculiarities among the Eucalyptus as excepting in hardiness, as among the conifers. The growth is usually very upright and strong, and it is a very rapid grower attaining a height of fifty feet in five years. In their native forests they have been measured 480 feet high. The limbs are upright. The foliage heavy, dark colored and pendulous, the leaves usually resemble in shape the almond leaf, but are very thick. Where anab evergreens as the olive, lemon and Australian acacia will not stand the climate, it is useless to attempt to grow the Eucalyptus. The tree will do well on every sort of moist soil in California; and in favorable seasons will grow the year round. While it can stand our frosts, it could not endure freezing weather. Mrs. Von Valkenburgh, of Santa Cruz, claiming that she has a right to vote under the Fourteenth Amendment, has commenced proceeding by mandamus to compel the County Clerk to place her name upon the Great Register. We have since learned that the motion was denied on the ground of unconstitutionality.
