ANAHEIM GAZETTE. SATURDAY, MAY 13. 1871. School Examinations. On Thursday and Friday, the pupils of the Anaheim Public Schools were publicly examined in both grammar and primary departments. The exercises were principally in mental arithmetic, geography and grammar. On Friday afternoon, many visitors were present, among whom we noticed Mr. Rimpau, Mr. Webber, Mr. Hill, Mr. Schmidt, Mr. Higgins, Mr. McFadden, Mr. Andrew Guinn, Mr. John Guinn, Mrs. Luedke, Mrs. Schmidt, Mrs Calisher, Mrs Reiser, Mrs. Higgins, Mrs. Blanco, Mrs. Hartman, Mrs. Kuchel, Mrs. Rimpau, Miss Boldt, Miss Kuchel Miss Swift and Miss Anna Casad and sisters, of Santa Ana. The examinations, particularly in mental arithmetic and grammar, were highly creditable to the pupils and gave evidence that they had been studious, and under the management of careful teachers. We noticed the ready and intelligent answers of many of them, but it would be unjust to draw comparisons where all did so admirably. Mr. J. M. Guinn, the principal of the grammar department, has been untiring in his effects, to instruct and develop his school, and the high training evinced yesterday is very creditable and certainly wholly attributable to him. Miss Jennie Swift, teacher in the primary department, has gained great credit by her watchfulness and careful management of those of more tender years, and closes the term with many, May Pic-Nic of the Liederkranz The grand annual May pic-nic of citizens took place at Santiago Carr on Sunday last, under the auspices of the Anaheim Liederkranz. The various parties, accompanied by the Br Band, left the city at 8 o'clock A.M., and arrived upon the ground at about 10 A.M. After arriving, a space was cleared of leaves and brush, and dancing was commenced, amid the great enjoyment. At 12 o'clock lunch time was called. After this, parties so tered off through the natural avenue lined with huge live oaks, while other took a siesta under the branches of umbrageous sycamores. At 2 p.m., dancing again commenced, and continued until 5 o'clock, when all made preparation and the start was made for home. When the various teams arrived at city limits, a halt was made, and formed in regular line of march, headed by the wagon containing the Bag About one hundred and fifty persons embracing the best citizens of Anaheim were at the picnic. Deep Tillage at Anaheim. The following paper has been handed to us for publication: Anaheim, April 27th, 1871. EDWARD F. NORTHAM, Esq., San Francisco—Dear Sir: Herewith I send you per Wells, Fargo & Co.'s Express, siximens of rye grown upon my la near Anaheim, just four months from the seed. The result has completely vindicated the good effects of deep and thorough culture, and has furnished the most convincing proof that by cultivation alone a good crop can be raised upon nine-tenths of the land compiling the plain surrounding the town Anaheim, and which is covered by Mr. J. M. Guinn, the principal of the grammar department, has been untiring in his effects, to instruct and develop his school, and the high training evinced yesterday is very creditable and certainly wholly attributable to him. Miss Jennie Swift, teacher in the primary department, has gained great credit by her watchfulness and careful management of those of more tender years, and closes the term with many, who at the next session will pass to the higher department. At the close of the exercises yesterday, by invitation of Mr. Guinn, remarks were made by Rev. Mr. Webber, Mr. G. W. Barter and W. M. McFadden, County Superintendent of Schools. Those of the latter were highly applauded. At the close, Mr. Guinn returned thanks to visitors, and advised the pupils that they would meet at 3 P.M., on Monday next, and at the same hour each day thereafter for rehearsal, for the first public school exhibition ever given in Anaheim, and which will take place in the New Hall on Friday evening next. The want of space prevents us from giving a more extended notice of the examinations. Henry was driving a load of hay in New School House.—The new school house at Capistrano has been completed, and is now occupied. The building is a credit to that growing community. Accident.—One day last week as Mr. A. Henry was driving a load of hay into town, his wagon ran over an obstruction, throwing him to the ground. As he fell one of the mules which he was driving kicked him severely spraining his ankle. We are glad to learn that he is now rapidly recovering. "Spuds."—We have recieved from Mr. W. H. Spurgeon, of Santa Ana, a sample of pink eye potatoes grown in fifty seven days, on the premises of Mr. J. D. Gage, near that place. They are clear skinned, of large size and delicious flavor. The soil which produced them was not irrigated. Organized.—At the meeting of the new City Council on Monday last, Mr. John P, Zeyn, was elected President, and F. W. Kuelp, Clerk for the ensuing term. Mammoth Cock.—Mr. W. R. Olden has received from San Francisco, by last steamer, a mammoth male specimen of the Brahma Pootra fowl. It stands three feet high, and can feed off the top of a flour barrel without effort. It is of the Nichols' stock. Its male progenitor cost $100 in the States. Mr. Olden proposes to obtain some hens of the same kind, and produce numbers of that species. Merchants and Mechanics Get your Printing done at the Gazette Job Printing Of the Liederkranz. The people at Los Nietos, and throughout that vicinity, are becoming well fixed. Most of them have paid for their lands, and in a short time, a large number of new buildings and fences will be built.. The whole valley seems to be owned in small tracts, and the soil being the very best, and the cultivation most practical and thorough, it may be regarded as one of the most prosperous regions of our flourishing county. Quite a trade is springing up at Gallatin, and if the people there will but lay off the town with regularity, and manifest an enterprise commensurate with their prospects, a town of no small pretensions will soon spring into existence.
