Rot in Grapes. I have used sulphur more than twenty years, and with benefit, to prevent rot. It is not caused by a fungus, as some suppose, but is caused by some insect puncturing the grapes, whether to deposit their eggs or not. I do not know, but we presume it is for that purpose; yet I never succeeded in finding any eggs or worms in a rotted grape. Well, says one, how do you know they have been stung by an insect? Because I have seen the puncture and a jet of juice which had oozed out. Whenever you find a grape that is stung, tie a string to it, for a mark so as to find it, and watch the result. After a long or shorter period it will turn white around the place where stung, and finally black, and continue to spread until the whole grape is rotted. If at any time with a sharp knife you cut out the black spot, the remainder of the grape will grow and ripen, thus proving there is no defect in the vine. Upon this discovery was based the sulphur remedy for the rot, being distasteful to all the insect tribe. Fumigation with sulphur in the evening is better than the dust, as I think the depredators work at night. I have no certain knowledge of the enemy, but always find a few large yellow bugs on the vines when the grapes are rotting—they are very shy follows. Whether friend or foe I know not, but kill them when I find them. A FIGHTING EDITOR.—An exchange in Northern Texas describes an individual it would be handy to have in any office. Hear him: "A fighting editor has been employed on this paper. He weighs 150 pounds. His fists are the very tools of death; his hair is very short; his eyes are black; his boots are No. 13. Oh, he is a monster, this fighting man of ours! He goes for men like an ant for green cheese, or a rooster." A FIGHTING EDITOR.—An exchange in Northern Texas describes an individual it would be handy to have in any office. Hear him: "A fighting editor has been employed on this paper. He weighs 150 pounds. His fists are the very tools of death; his hair is very short; his eyes are black; his boots are No. 13. O, he is a monster, this fighting man of ours! He goes for men like an ant for green cheese, or a rooster for a grasshopper. He was never thrashed. O, he is a whale! He ate nineteen cabs of oysters at our office the other night, and called for more. He is the heaviest instrument of total and eternal punishment, on record? Come at us, ye lean and lank specimens of humanity; spit on our boots if you dare; slide down our cellar doors if you can and if our Wallupus don't everlastingly go for you, then size and belt have nothing in them." CRANBERRY CULTURE.—Cranberries average about four dollars per bushel, wholesale, in New York, and there is a steady demand for them all over the United States; besides great quantities are shipped to Europe, where they find a ready sale. There are many acres of land in this State that are adapted to the cultivation of cranberries, and which will bring a fortune to any person who tries them into cranberry fields. Upland cranberries have been cultivated on Long Island for a long time with profit. A writer says that he recently saw small plots of cranberry vines in the vicinity of Breedwood, L. I., on high and dry land, which were said to be very productive. The following is a noteworthy specimen of medical prescriptions written by ignorant pretenders. It is genuine: R. Fir Kramps. Tinet. Kamfire, won ounce. Tinet. Lodenum, a little. Tinet Hot drops, a few drops. Tinet. Kyan pepper 5 cents worth. Kloreform, a little, but not much, as it is a dangerous medicine. Dose, half-teaspoonful when the Kramps come on. A firm in Honolulu advertises in the local papers some goods thus frankly: "A small lot, of not very good quality; but as good as the average that is found about town." Transportation. The N. P. T.
