ANAHEIM GAZETTE.
SATURDAY, APRIL 1, 1871.
Inquiry Concerning Anaheim.
Through the courtesy of Dr. David Taylor, we make the following extract from the letter of a young and able physician, residing at Rocky Comfort, Arkansas:
"We were all glad to learn that you had fallen into such a country where vigor, health and prosperity were the characteristic features. "The name Anaheim, its population and resources" in the Gazette, has been read to more than one individual in this country; and many wish they wore there—away from this forlorn, overburdened and unprogressive State. This section of country is in an awful condition as to money matters. There is universal indebtedness by all classes, races and colors. The crop of cotton was not half gathered, and no grain grown. As to physicians, they are literally starved out. We are all determined not to practice hereafter, only when we are paid.
I would be pleased if you would write me what amount of money it would take to buy me a farm of a few acres, at or near your town; and where I could to some extent, depend upon my profession for a living.
W. H. Hawkins."
We would say to Mr. Hawkins that his condition would undoubtedly be better in this happy, plentiful, gold and fruit bearing country. Anaheim is growing, and although a distressingly healthy place, another good physician would no doubt obtain a fair practice in time.
STUNG BY A STINGAREE--On Thrusday week, as Mr. D. K. Williams of Anaheim, was at the Landing, amusing himself with a pair of glasses.
Real Estate Sale -- A Fortune Realized in One Year.
On the 22d ult., Mr. Pete Griffin sent to Mr. Timothy Carroll, a tract of five acres in Anaheim Extension, west of the city, for $500. This land was sold two years ago for eleven dollars and acre. About a year ago Mr. Griffin purchased it for thirty-three dollars per acre; and, with a year's growth in Anaheim, it has been sold for $100 per acre. The purchaser, Mr. Carroll, young Irishman, came to Anaheim one year ago, with a capital of $7. Since that time, he has purchased forty acres adjoining the five acres lately purchased of Griffin; and may be said to have made in one year, on $7 capital, property to the value of $5,000. How that for high? Carroll is a hard working man, and therein lies one secret of his success. An incident is told of him which may be worthy of mention: Lay fall, when the Barley crop came on the ground, Tim. found himself without a granary. So he quietly moved out of his little frame house, braced up on the outside, filled it with sacs of barley, and took up his abode in adjacent stack of straw, remarking: "Be Jabers, I've been broke up twice and I'll make sure this time."

We would say to Mr. Hawkins that his condition would undoubtedly be better in this happy, plentiful, gold and fruit bearing country. Anaheim is growing, and although a distressingly healthy place, another good physician would no doubt obtain a fair practice in time.
STING BY A STINGAREE—On Thrusday week, as Mr. D. K. Williams of Anaheim, was at the Landing, amusing himself by fishing with a net, he was severely stung by a fish known as the Stingaree. He was lifting a few small fish from the net, and, among others, picked up what appeared to be a small flounder, when he received a fierce sting from the tail of the reptile, in his right fore finger. He immediately commenced sucking the poison from the wound; but in a few minutes he suffered great agony, and became delirious. His friends took him at once to a house, and gave him three full pints of wiskey, which together with constant attention brought him through safely in about fifteen hours; and he has now entirely recovered.
Suggestion. — It is suggested that the Colorado river be turned aside from its channel into the low deserts adjacent to it. It is claimed that by this means, a new paradise of agriculture and more treasure would be created; that the heat would be moderated, and the Santa Ana win is stop blowing into the Los Angeles valley. Others suggest the removal of San San Bernardino Mountain into the Santa Ana Canon, for this latter purpose. Who will take the contract?
Within a year Anaheim has been furnished with daily mails, a telegraph, and a newspaper. Three important items in civilization and progress.
The steamer Viquero, will arrive at Wilmington, from San Diego, to-morrow or Monday next.
No Meeting. — Owing to absence of members, the City Council did not hold a session on Monday last.
PETITION FOR A ROAD. — At the next meeting of the Board of Supervisors,

Bates and thence east and south to the town of Santa Ana, intersecting the old stage road. The people of that part of the county stand in need of greater facilities for inter-communication, and require that their interests be looked after.
