Signs of the Hands.
A little work on "Modern Palmistry" brings together a large amount of amuseing gossip, but we cannot say how much you believe of it. The person who will carefully study the wrinkles, furrows, lines and hollows on the hands will be able to tell fortunes as well as a modern gipsy.
It he palm of the hand be long and the fingers well proportioned, etc., not soft, but rather hard, it denotes a person to be ingenious, changeable, and given to theft and vice.
It the hands be hollow, solid, and well knit in the joints, it predicts long life, but if overthwarted, then it denotes short life.
Observe the finger of Mercury—that is, the little finger; if the end of it exceeds the joint of the ring finger, such a man will rule his own house, and his wife will be pleasing and obedient to him; but if it be short and does not reach the joint, he will have a shrew, and she will be boss.
Broad nails show the person to be bashful, fearful, but of a gentle nature.
Narrow nails denote the person to be inclined to mischief, and to do injury to his neighbors.
Long nails show a person to be good natured, but distrustful, and loving reconciliation rather than differences.
Oblique nails signify deceit and want of courage.
Little round nails denote obstinacy, anger, and hatred.
If they are crooked at the extremity, they show pride and fierceness.
Round nails show a choloric person, yet soon reconciled, honesty, a lover of secret sciences.
Fleshy nails denote a person to be mild in temper, idle and lazy.
Pale and black nails denote a person to be very deceitful to his neighbor, and subject to many diseases.
Red and marked nails signify a choleric and material nature, given to

Quince Growing.—An Ohio quince grower has been very successful for two years past with his fruit. His treatment of the tree is very simple. He spades the ground of his orchard, every spring and scatters a peck of coal ashes around the tree. He finds salt the best manure for the quince, and applies about one quart to the ground under each tree after the soil has been spaded, and another quart when the quinces are about half grown. Last year he sold three hundred bushels from his orchard of three-fourths of an acre.
A Disconsolate citizen of New Orleans put the following question to one of the papers published there: "Mr. Edytur—That what I wish to ask you is whether strychnine, what the police give to dogs' won't pizen the human being after sassingers has been fried. Please put in the paper how this is, for if friend strychnine is pizen. I go again sassingers. Yours till poisoned."
