ANAHEIM GAZETTE. SATURDAY, APRIL I, 1871. Consistency vs. Discourtesy. Our Republican contemporary of the Gazette is poaching upon the preserves of the Star. It agonizingly impresses our distinguished fellow citizen" to abandon that "sequestered and sublimely picturesque vale," and sacrifice himself for the public good. Whether or not Barkis is willing has not yet transpired - Los Angeles News. A few days since, the News took a Northern paper to task for alleging that Judge King was connected with the News, and called it a discourtesy - although the name of Judge King still remains on the first page of that paper, as a proprietor and publisher. Now is it not a discourtesy to call the Gazette a Republican paper, when its attitude is well known to be Independent? From the following, taken from the News of Thursday, coupled with the foregoing, it would appear that the Star is also Republican: "It has been especially reserved for the Sacramento Reporter to discover that the Star is a Democratic paper. This will be news to the Democracy of Los Angeles." As the Express is Republican, it is thus cleverly made out that Los Angeles county supports three Republican papers, and only one Democratic. Friend Beane, are you not trying to make too fine a point in this? "The Evening Express." — This is the title of a first-class daily newspaper, the first issue of which made its appearance at Los Angeles, on the 29th edition of The Anaheim Gazette. As the Express is Republican, it is thus cleverly made out that Los Angeles county supports three Republican papers, and only one Democratic. Friend Beane, are you not trying to make too fine a point in this? "The Evening Express."—This is the title of a first-class daily newspaper, the first issue of which made its appearance at Los Angeles, on the 29th ult. It is Republican in sentiment—published by an association of practical printers—and is under the management of Mr. Geo. A. Tiffany, an intelligent gentleman and able writer. It should, and no doubt will, meet with the earnest support of every member of the party it advocates. It has an exclusive field and must succeed. Daily Union."—We are in receipt of the Daily Union of San Diego, a tastily printed five column paper, which Messrs. Bushyhead & Gunn commenced to publish on the 20th ult. The Union has taken the initiative as a daily in that city, and will undoubtedly be sustained by a liberal patronage. City Election.—The City Charter of Anaheim provides for an election for City Ordens on the first Monday of May in each year, but makes no provision for nominations at any date prior to that. It is customary, however, to make nominations about one month prior to elections, and if this rule is adopted, nominations will probably be made on Monday next. Strange Animal.—Yesterday morning, as Mr. D. Fuel, of Upper Santa Ana, was looking up some stray sheep, he came unexpectedly upon a remarkable looking animal lying concealed in a thicket. Upon his near approach, the animal started, and appeared to run upright like a man, with great rapidity; but Mr. F. being a good shet, stopped the flight of the anomaly with a well aimed rifle. The shot only wounded the creature, which fell disabled and uttering the most plaintive cries, Mr. Fuel approached to examine his game, and found it to have a straight horn projecting from its forehead, a smooth brow from a clear yellow skin as low the animal started, and appeared to run upright like a man, with great rapidity; but Mr. F. being a good shot, stopped the flight of the anomaly with a well aimed rifle. The shot only wounded the creature, which fell disabled and uttering the most plaintive cries. Mr. Fuel approached to examine his game, and found it to have a straight horn projecting from its forehead, a smooth hairless face, a clear yellow skin as low as the hips, and claws resembling the human hand. The hinder feet were almost round, and resembled those of an elephant. Noticing a sort of brand near its right hind hip, Mr. D. Fuel made an inspection of the same, and, with the aid of a powerful magnifier, read the letters "ap-rilf-ool." The steamer Taber arrived down safely on Wednesday last. Thanks - The thanks of this office are respectfully tendered to the families of Mr. Dalton, Azusa; and Temple of Templito; for courtesies received. A fine hotel is being erected at Santa Ana. Excursions.—Several excursions are in contemplation for the heated term. Among the grandest is one to be made up by the best class of Los Angeles citizens for thirty days at Santa Catalina, in August. The "regular thing" at Santa Monica, will take place as a matter of course. From Anabeim several are in contemplation, one being to the Landing, another to Santiago Cañon, another to Capistrano, and a mining and hunting jaunt to the mountains. Items About Los Angeles The performances of the Carter Group, at Merced Theatre, are of the greatest drama, and are highly applauded. An ice machine is to be set up at Stearns' mill. It will be capable of turning out a ton and a half of ice daily. The enterprise is being inaugurated by Mr. Bent, who proposes to sell ice at four cent per pound. The Evening Express is acquiring a large circulation. H. M. Mitchell, Esq., Local Editor of the Daily Star, was admitted to the bar as an Attorney at Law, in the 17th Judicial District Court, on Thursday last. East Lynn was performed at the Merced Theatre, Friday Evening. Capt. Jones of Revenue Department has gone up to San Francisco. Mr. Lappa will receive taxes during his absence. Wool, &c — From the Weekly Market Report of Littlefield, Webb & Co., San Francisco, we take the following quotations: Wool, Southern Burry, per lb, 12a15c; Gilroy, 16a18c; San Juan, 16a18c; Teama, 16a18c; Shasta, 16a18c; Butte, 16a18c; Oregon, 20a23c; Willamette Valley, 22a25c. Sheep Skins, as per wool, each, per lb, 25a75c: Shearlings, each, per lb, 5a10c. Tallow, per lb, 5a8. Personal.—Maj. Frank Ganahl, of Granahl & McDaniel, Los Angeles, swas in town on Thursday last, en route home from Arizona, whither he had been professionally engaged. Senior Don Pablo Pryor and Judge Richard Egan of San Juan Capistrano, REVENUE CHANGES.—The First and Second U.S. Revenue Collection Districts for California, comprising San Francisco and the counties southward, have been consolidated and now form one District. It is probable that L. H. Cary will be Collector, and James H. Laidley assessor for the new District. What changes will be made among the subordinates, remains to be seen. The wine-growers and distillers of this section will be pleased to learn that the official head of Assessor Burnham is to roll from the block. Whatever his successor may do, he cannot well prove himself a worse official than Burnham has been.—Star. Exalted.—On the 22d of March, Bismarck was made a Prince, and Moltke was given the Grand Cross of the Order of the Iron Cross. General Von Schwinetz, Prussian Minister, was also presented with the Cross of the Order of Leopold. Brass Band — A Brass Band is being organized in Anaheim, with fine prospects of success. There are no houses for rent in Anaheim. Sanor Don Prudencio Yorba says it will rain on Sunday. The sheep shearing season has commenced throughout the county. Special Notices. ELECTION NOTICE.
