ANAHEIM GAZETTE. SATURDAY, MARCH 4, 1871 The Next City Election. The time for holding the next City Election in Anaheim—the first day of May next—is close at hand; and as the nominations will be made on the third of April—a little less than one month hence—it becomes our thinking people who have the good of this municipality at heart to set about the selection of suitable candidates for the various offices. No time is to be lost, if you desire reform and a new deal—and as one would probably come with the other, it might be well to have a new deal all around. If you would not from your own hard earnings fill the purses of professional office-seekers—if you feel too poor to aid in furnishing hungry pawners with public pap—if you feel that, as citizens of Anaheim, you have been insulted during the present administration by overbearing officials—or suffered from the extent of exhorbitant fees and oppressive ordinances, rise up in your strength, and, in the Caucus of April 3d, put such men forward as you know are honest, and in whom you have confidence. If there are any such among the present incumbents, retain them; but weed out, beyond peradventure, every villain you find. Among the offices you will be required to fill, are those of Mayor, five Councilmen, a City Attorney, City Treasurer, City Assessor and City Marshal. Look to it carefully, that all your candidates are honest, reliable, industrious. CITY COUNCIL PROGRAMS. The City Council met at 3 p.m., on Monday last, at the new City Hall. Present—John Fischer, President; and councilmen Kroeger, Zeylan and Champlin. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Finance Committee reported officer reports for month of January, which were adopted. Bill of P Davis, $50, was allowed. The Committee on Streets were granted two weeks longer time to report. The Treasurer's and Secretary's reports were read and accepted. S J. Davis offered his resignation to City Attorney, which was accepted. A motion, to frame an ordinance imponing stray animals, was referred to Judicial Committee. On motion, the salary of City Marshal was reduced to $25 per month, from March 1st. F W. Kuelp was employed to prosecute delinquent taxes. Orninance No. 13 and 14 were returned by the Mayor with his approvals. Adjourned,'till March 13th. BUSINESS CHANGE — Messrs Ashcroft & Pryor have purchased the entire interest of both the butcher shops of Anaheim, and will, hereafter, have our citizens supplied with the best means obtainable in the country. They have also purchased the slaughter-house and grounds of L. Wartenberg, south of the city. Having a large stock of cattle their own, they will be better able to satisfy the demand—and furnish what has long been needed—a first class whom you have confidence. If there are any such among the present incumbents, retain them; but weed out, beyond peradventure, every villain you find. Among the offices you will be required to fill, are those of Mayor, five Councilmen, a City Attorney, City Treasurer, City Assessor and City Marshal. Look to it carefully, that all your candidates are honest, reliable, industrious men, who have the welfare of the city at heart, or before another election you may have a burdensome debt, and no credit at home or abroad, and bitterly regret your heedless choice. ESQ. Probably no people in the world have a more inordinate bankering after titles than the citizens of our own well-beloved U.S.A. As men often feel the most uncompetrable passion for an idol after they have renounced its worship—as the children of Israel longed more than ever for the flesh-pots of Egypt when they had gone far on their journey to the Promised Land—so citizen American America more and more tenaciously to the pretentious titles of the mother country, after she has formally dissolved all connection with the parent state. As an illustration of this principle, take the universal customs that prevails, I believe, throughout the Union, of tacking to a man's name the meaningless addition of Esq. Meaning less, for two reasons: first, that we have in the United States no such law as those which make the title applicable and proper in England; second, that as the title is, in our country, apprehensively to everybody, it is distinctive of nobody. Camden enumerates four conditions of life, which invests their possessor with the rank of an Esquire: 1st, The eldest sons of knights, and their eldest sons in perpetual succession. 2nd, The eldest sons of younger sons of peers, and their eldest sons in like perpetual succession. 3rd, Esquires created by the King's letters patent, on other investiture, and their eldest sons 4th; Esquires by virtue of their offices as Justices of the Peace and others who bear any office of trust under the crown. & Pryor have purchased the entire interest of both the butcher shops of Anaheim, and will, hereafter, have our citizens supplied with the best means obtainable in the country. They have also purchased the slaughter-house and grounds of L. Wartenberg, south of the city. Having a large stock of cattle their own, they will be better able to satisfy the demand—and furnish what has long been needed—a first class butcher shop. They intend to make necessary changes, and erect a market to meet the requirements of the people, as soon as possible. GALOP.—We are indebted to W. Brodrick, Esq., of Los Angeles, for fine piece of music entitled "Pickwick Galop" and dedicated to the members of the Anaheim Club, of that name. FIRE COMPANY.—The parties endearing to organize a Fire Company and purchase fire apparatus for Anabeil are meeting with success. Our people appreciate the need of such an organization, and are subscribing the necessary funds. In connection with this, we would suggest that a couple of large cisterns be dug in different parts of the city and that they be kept constantly full water, for use in cases of fire. If this precaution is not taken, great difficulty will be had in finding water at such times of need. Mr. Ben Dreyfus, of Langenberg & Co., is to leave for San Francisco and the Eastern States, by the new steamor. EXAMINATION.—The school examinee board, consisting of W. M. McFadden and M. Guinn and T. H. Rose, closes its session at Los Angeles to-day. The examinee such teachers as have expiring certificates, as well as new applicants for certificates. Teachers certificates of the 1st grade, continue for three years, 2d grade, for two years, and 3d grade, for one year. The percentage of qualification has been raised as follows: 1st grade, 85; 2nd grade 75; 3rd grade 65. It was formerly about 20 per cent lower.
