ANAHEIM GAZETTE. SATURDAY, MARCH 4, 1871. South Pacific Railroad Bill At the time of our last publication, the South Pacific Railroad Bill had been taken up by the House of Representatives, and passed with an amendment. Almost immediately thereafter it was sent back to the Senate, which body non-concurred, and on their part appointed a Committee of Conference, to confer with a similar Committee if the House would appoint one. The record of the Senate's action, with a resolution for a House Committee to be appointed, was sent to the Speaker's desk at once, but could not be taken therefrom without a total suspension of the rules and the Committee could not be appointed without a two-thirds vote. The earnest work of our friends was manifest when the rules were suspended, and afterwards the Committee appointed by the required two-thirds vote. Since then, the two committees, in joint session, have been struggling with each other, and contending with lobbyists; and the latest telegraphic advises, dated at Washington March 2d, are as follows: The Conference Committee on the Southern Pacific railroad bill have compromised, and will report in favor of a main trunk—with a branch from Marshall, Texas, to New Orleans, via Alexandra and Baton Rouge; and a branch on the Southern Pacific railroad of California, to connect with the trunk at the Colorado river near the 324 parallel. the latest telegraphic advises, dated at Washington March 2d, are as follows: The Conference Committee on the Southern Pacific railroad bill have compromised, and will report in favor of a main trunk—with a branch from Marshall, Texas, to New Orleans, via Alexandra and Baton Rouge; and a branch on the Southern Pacific railroad of California, to connect with the trunk at the Colorado river near the 324 parallel. This is very satisfactory, inasmuch as it is customary in Congress to adopt reports of Conference Committees. To-day is the last day of the present business session and we believe it will pass before 12 o'clock to-night. If an extra Session is called, it will probably be an executive one and apply only to the Senate, for the confirmation or ordinary nominations. LATER: Since the above was in type, we have received other dispatches from Washington, which will be found elsewhere. From them it appears that the House Conference Committee backed down from the main trunk policy of the House and favored the San Francisco interest, making a junction, or what is equivalent to a junction, in the mountains on the 35th parallel. It is now for the interest of Southern California to kill the bill, and some of the Senators have declared their intention to talk it to death to-night. The dispatches are somewhat mixed, as the last few lines state that our outside friends in Washington are quite confident of success. VERY LATEST. As we go to press, a dispatch announces the passage of the Wilmington Rreakwater and Harbor Bill; also, that the Railroad is to come down from its point on the 35th parallel through San Gorgonio Pass, and from Los Angeles to San Diego. Congratulatory dispatches from Washington to San Diego are not well received there. They don't like the angle in the road. STILL LATER! A dispatch received at the Gazette office at 9 o'clock. P.M., last night, announced that the Railroad Bill had passed both Houses Hooray! Gorgonio Pass, and from Los Angeles to San Diego. Congratulatory dispatches from Washington to San Diego are not well received there. They don't like the angle in the road. STILL LATER! A dispatch received at the Gazette office at 9 o'clock. P.M., last night, announced that the Railroad Bill had passed both Houses. Hooray! Spring--Glorious Spring! The swelling sap and budding leaf in the trees, vines and shrubs, are now giving evidence of the new life—the rejuvenescence of Spring. The carrot of the wild canary, the chatter of the wild mocking-bird, and the occasional flitting of the mamoth hummingbird, together with all the ordinary charms of spring-time, are now with us, and fail not to produce a pleasing and hopeful effect upon the mind. Presently, with the successive growths of different colored flowers, will commence a series of beautiful changes in the fields and on the plains, and the evergreen, ever magnificent scenery of Anaheim will be heightened to perfect beauty. If the condition of man is happier where nature is most profuse—where the paradise birds awaken him at morn' with their pleasing music—where no vile reptiles or insects inhabit, and where the air of Spring is positively laden with perfume, then here at Anaheim is this utmost natural happiness obtainable, and man should repose content. Would any behold the happiest place; would any behold the very bosom of affectionate nature; would any desire to see the best place in the Western Hemisphere, Circumspice. Washington Dispatches, VERY LATEST! Washington, March 2 At the meeting of the Conference Committee on Southern Pacific railroad bill yesterday, conference on part of the House receded from the position assumed by the House the other day, when the bill was reported and passed. The House seemed at that time to show a determination to have nothing to do with anything but the trunk line from Marshal (Tex.) to San Diego. The Southern and Pacific States' interests was urged in the Senate, and thus compelled a recognition of New Orleans and San Francisco interests. According to the bill as agreed on in the Conference, the road at its California terminus [form right of junction?] is allowed to go to a point in the mountain range on the 35th parallel, at or near where the South Pacific or California route is now constructing. The House bill confined it to direct San Diego route. The line from New Orleans to Marshall [Fox] is also incorporated in bill, this leaves out only so much of the original Senate bill as relates to the Tennessee and Arkansas lines to become part of the South Transcontinental system.
