MARK TWAIN ON BEN FRANKLIN.—What an adroit old adventurer the subject of this memoir! In order to get a chance to fly his kite on Sunday, he used to hang his key on the string and let on to be fishing for lightning. He invented a stove that would smoke your head off in four hours, by the clock. One can see the almost devilish satisfaction he took in it by giving it his name.
He was always proud of telling how he entered Philadelphia for the first time with nothing in the world but two shi-lings in his pocket and four rolls of bread under his arm. But really, when you come to examine it critically, it was nothing. Anybody could have done it Franklin said in one of his inspired flights of malignity:
"Early to bed and early to rise.
Makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.
As if it were any object to a boy to be healthy, wealthy and wise on any such terms. The sorrow that maxim has cost me with it, tongue cannot tell. The legitimate result is my present state of general debility, indigence and mental aberration. My parents used to have me up before nine o'clock in the morning sometimes, when I was a boy. If they had let me take my natural rest, where would I have been now? Keeping store, no doubt, and respected by all.
"For myself," said the great Spinoza,
"I am certain that the good of human life can lie in the possession of things which for one man to possess is for the rest to lose, but rather in things which all can possess alike, and where one man's wealth promotes his neighbor."
A lady wishes some one would invent a "legometer," to attach to men's pedals, so that wives may determine the distance traveled by their husbands.

TO PHYSICIANS.
New York, August 16th, 1838.
Allow me to call your attention to my Preparation of Compound Extract Bechna. The component purer, Bechna Long Leaf, Cubensis Juniper Berrim.
Mode of Preparation—Bechna in vacua. Juniper Berrim, by distillation, to form a fine grit. Cubensis extracted by displacement with spirits obtained from Juniper Berrim; very little sugar is used, and a small proportion of spirit. It is more palatable than any now in use.
Bechna as prepared by Druggists is of a dark color. It is a plant that emits its fragrance; the action of a flame destroys this (its active principle), leaving a dark and glorious decotion. Minus the color of ingredients. The Bechna is my preparation predominates; the smallest quantity of the other ingredients are added, to prevent fermentation; upon inspection it will be found not to be a Tinature, as make in Pharmacopia, nor is it a Syrup—and therefore can be used in cases where fever or inflammation exist. In this, you have the knowledge of the ingredients and the mode of preparation.
Hoping that you will favor it with a trial, and that upon inspection it will meet with your approbation.
With a feeling of profound confidence,
I am, very respectfully,
H. T. HELMBOLD.

They are the GREAT BLOOD PURIFIER and LIFE GIVING PRINCIPLE a perfect Renovator and Invigorator of the System, carrying off all poisonous matter and restoring the blood to a healthy condition. No person can take these Bitters according to direction and remain long unwell.
For Inflammatory and Chronic Rheumatism and Gout, Dyspepsia or Indigestion, Billions, Remittent and Intermittent Fevers, Discenses of the Blood, Liver, Kidneys, and Bladder, these Bitters have been most successful. Such Diseases are caused by Vitilated Blood, which is generally produced by derangement of the Digestive Organs.
DYSPEPSIA OR INDIGESTION.
Headache, Pain in the Shoulders, Coughs, Tightness of the Chest, Dizziness, Sour Eruptions of the Stomach, Dad taste in the Month Billions Attacks, Palpitation of the Heart, Indigestion of the Lungs, Pain in the regions of the Kidneys, and a hundred other painful symptoms, are the offspring of Dyspepsia.
They invigorate the Stomach and stimulate the torpid liver and bowels, which render them of unequaled efficacy in cleansing the blood of all impurities, and imparting new life and vigor to the whole system.
FOR SKIN DISEASES, Eruptions, Tetter, Salt Rheum, Blotches, Spots, Pimples, Pustules, Boils, Carbuncles, Ring-Worms, Scald-Head, Sore Eyes, Erysipelas, Itch, Scarfs, Discolorations of the Skin, Humors and Diseases of the Skin, of whatever name or nature, are literally dug up and carried out of the system in a short time by the use of these Bitters. One bottle in such cases will convince the most incredulous of their curative effects.
Cleanse the Vitiated Blood whenever you find its impurities bursting through the skin in Pimples, Eruptions or Sorces; cleanse it when you find it obstructed and sluggish in the veins; cleanse it when it is foul, and your feelings will fall you when. Keep the blood pure and the health of the system will follow.
FIN, TAPK and other WORMS, lurking in the system of so many thousands, are effectually destroyed and removed. For full directions, read carefully the circular around each bottle.
