AN ADMINISTRATIVE. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 1771. ANNIM SCHOOL DISTRICT.—Taxes are now overdue. RAIN.—On Saturday last, rain fell to the amount of half an inch, and as it was not succeeded by heavy winds, it must have been of considerable value. SUDDEN DEATH.—On Sunday morning last, an Indian woman, by the name of Ana Maria de Duarte, fell dead in front of her house, near Los Angeles street. Cause—rupture of the heart. ADMITTED TO THE BAR.—The Hon. Max. Strobel, Mayor of Anaheim, was last week admitted to the bar, as an Attorney and Counsellor at Law in the Seventeenth Judicial District, of the State of California, after due examination by a board of Lawyers, composed of Glassell, Kewen and Ganahl. Major Strobel has one way and another, acquired a considerable knowledge of the principles of law, and the California statute; and, being possessed of great natural ability, it may reasonably be expected that he will make his mark at the bar. DELAYED.—The steamers Tabor and Orizaba did not leave San Francisco until Thursday morning, hence will not arrive at the Landing until this afternoon. QUIEN SABE.—A large quantity of wedding-cake has reached the Gazette office from the village of Santa Ana. We presume some-one has been committing matrimony in that vicinity. CITY COUNCIL RESERVANCE. The City Council met at 8 o'clock, p.m., on Monday last, at the new City Hall. Present—John Fischer, President; and counselmen Kwenger and Zeyah. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Reports of officers for the month of January, referred to Finance Committee. Petition to build bridge across the ditch on Parker street, referred to Street Committee. Petition to abate nuisance on Center street, referred to Street Committee. Bills of O. B. Peck & Co., $4; and Davis, $50; referred to Finance Committee. An Ordinance, for the taxing of dogs was adopted. The Treasurer and Clerk of the Common Council were requested to prepare a statement of the financial affairs of the city, and report at next meeting. On motion, meeting adjourned till Monday, the 27th inst., at 3 o'clock p.m. NEW CONSTABLE.—R. H. Rutherford Esq., of Santa Ana, has been appointed constable, by the Board of supervisors for San Joaquin Township. San Joaquin Township is bounded a fellow: All that part of Los Angeles county circumscribed by a boundary line beginning at the mouth of the Santa Ana river, the common corner to the rancho Los Bolsas to the west, and Santiago de Santa Ana to the east; thence following the shore of the Pacific Ocean southwardly to the southeast corner of th DELAYED.—The steamers Tabor and Orizaba did not leave San Francisco until Thursday morning, hence will not arrive at the Landing until this afternoon. QUIEN SABE.—A large quantity of wedding-cake has reached the Gazette office from the village of Santa Ana. We presume some-one has been committing matrimony in that vicinity. NOTICE the column advertisement of S. Lazard & Co., in this issue. That firm is selling at greatly reduced prices. NEW FENCE.—A large tract of country has been securely fenced in with boards and posts just below the Coyote House. EFFECT.—The effect of the late water-spout was to thoroughly irrigate the ranches of Wm. McFadden and J. P. Pierce, benefiting both to the value of $1,000. PHOTOGRAPHS.—Mr. Vale, the "pilot-man," has now made his appearance at the new photograph gallery on Los Angeles street. Persons who wish to have their "phizez" taken, in a workmanly manner, will do well to give him a call. REDUCTION.—Lumber has been reduced to $28 per thousand feet, by the old established firm of Langonberger, Blochman & Co. RELIGIOUS — Services as usual at the Presbyterian Church, by the Rev. J. P. Webber, at 11½ o'clock in the forenoon. At 3 o'clock in the afternoon, there will be a children's meeting, which will be addressed by the Rev. W. F. Peters, of San Francisco. All persons, young and old, are invited to be present. IMPROVEMENTS — On the northern side of Anaheim, a great amount of improvement is taking place, by the opening up of new lands, and the setting out of vines and trees. The soil, although covered with caustic, is pronounced rich and productive. MORE RAIN.—On Wednesday last, this portion of the county was again visited by quite a heavy shower of rain, for San Joaquin Township. San Joaquin Township is bounded by fellows: All that part of Los Angeles county circumscribed by a boundary line beginning at the mouth of the Santa Ana river, the common corner to the rancho Los Bolsas to the west, and Santiago de Santa Ana to the east; thence following the shore of the Pacific Ocean south-easterly to the southeast corner of the rancho San Joaquin, at the mouth of the Canada de Las Lagunas; then northerly and up said Canada with the east boundary of the San Joaquin rancho to the southwest corner of the rancho Canada de Los Alisos; thence north easterly with the west boundary of san rancho Canada de Los Alisos and its direct prolongation to the summit of the Santa Ana mountains and the countryside; thence with said county line to the Santa Ana river; thence westerly and southerly down said river with the boundary line of the rancho Santiago de Santa Ana to the point of beginning. IMPROVEMENTS — On the northern side of Anaheim, a great amount of improvement is taking place by the opening up of new lands, and the setting out of vines and trees. The soil, although covered with castus, is pronounced rich and productive. MORE RAIN. — On Wednesday last, this portion of the county was again visited by quite a heavy shower of rain, which commenced in the afternoon and lasted till midnight. The fall of rain was about one-quarter of an inch. Our farmers can now proceed with their agricultural operations, as the earth is sufficiently moist to insure a good crop. RICH ORZ. — We are indebted to Mr. Mendelson, who has just arrived from Lower California, for some rich specimens of gold quartz, brought by him from that region, which we opine, are the richest that has ever been brought into this county; exceeding, in rechness, the famous quartz of the Vulture mine in Arizona. Those specimens are from the Angel Cañas mine, situated in San Rafael valley, about one hundred miles from San Diego. He also informs us that there are, in this valley, several other ledges of nearly equal value and richness. We prophecy a brilliant future for the mining interests of Lower California. AGRICULTURER. — We are in receipt of the February number of the American Agriculturist, artfully illustrated paper of 44 pages, published by Orange Judd & Co., New York. Its contents are very interesting, and embraces a large fund of indispensable information to farmers. Freight List.
