SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 18. 1871 To Make Cows Give Milk - The agricultural editor of the Bee-Keepers' Journal ventures for the following handed him by a friend: If you desire to get a large yield of milk, give you cow, three times a day, water slightly warm, slightly salted, in which bran has been stirred, at the rate of one quart to two gallons of water. You will find your cow will gain twenty-five per cent., immediately, under the effects of it, and will become so attached to it as to refuse to drink clear water, unless very thirsty. The Barrel Coop — This is an appliance to keep chicks, that any one can make, with very little trouble. All that is necessary, is to place a common flour or other barrel on its side, take out one of the heads, place some straw in the back end of the barrel; put the hen and chicks in; have some lath, or strips or boards at hand, with one end sharpened, and drive them into the ground in front of the croop, and your work is accomplished. — Rural New Yorker. A gentleman in Michigan has succeeded in selling his second hand wife for $10. The transaction took place in Flint, where sparks are numerous enough to create some competition. In other parts of the State $5 is quoted as the current price of such commodities. THE EXTENT OF CALIFORNIA. — Commissioner Wilson, of the General land office, sets down the area of California at 188,981 square miles, or 120,947,840 acres. And of this amount, only 32,388,378 acres have been surveyed, or a little more than one-fourth the area of the State. "One Fair Spirit."—There are now no less than thirty-six girls studying for the ministry at Oberlin College; a like proportion are being stuffed with theology at a number of other female colleges. The prospect now seems to be quite encouraging that all who sigh: O that the desert were my dwelling place, With one fair spirit for my minister, may speedily be accommodated.- Figaro. Cincinnati has been depopulated of cats by a commercial traveler, who advertised in the name of a Kentucky firm, offering $15 a dozen for them. One of the most successful planters in Wisconsin is a widow who has just buried her sixth husband. A sure way to make an impression—Fall down in the mud. Why are birds melancholy in the morning? Because their little bills are all over dew! Every bird pleases us with its lay—especially the hen. The man who "couldn't find his match" went to bed in the dark. Hardware. McDONALD & CO., WHOLESALE DRUGGISTS, SAN FRANCISCO, CAL. Call the attention of Dealers to their large assortment of "Newly Arrived" Goods composed in part of the following articles, together with every thing kept in a well supplied WHOLK- TO PHYSICIANS. New York, August 18th, 1864. Allow me to call your attention to my Provision of Compound Extract Booth. The components pass me, Bunna, Long Leaf, Calhoun-Juniper Berries. Mode of Preparation—Bunna in vase. Juniper Berries, by distillation, to form a fine glacial extract by dispersion with spirits obtained from Juniper Berries; very little sugar is used, and a small proportion of spirit. It is more palatable than any new in am. Bunna is prepared by Druggists in a dark color. It is a plant that emits its fragrance; the action of a shade destroys this (the active principle), leaving a dark and glistening deposition. Mine is the color of ingredients. The Bunna in my preparation predominates; the smallest quantity of the other ingredients are added, to prevent fermentation; upon inspection it will be found was to be a Tincture, so make in Pharmacopia, nor is it a Syrup—and therefore can be used in cases where fever or inflammation exist. In this, you have the knowledge of the ingredients and the mode of preparation. Hoping that you will favor it with a trial, and that upon inspection it will meet with your approbation. With a feeling of profound confidence, I am, very respectfully, H. T. HELMBOLD, Chemist and Druggist of 19 years' Experience. (From the Manufacturing Chemists in the World!) November 4, 1854. "I am acquainted with Mr. H. T. Helmbold; I occupied the Drug Store opposite my residence and was successful in conducting the business where others had not been equally so before him.
