SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 18. 1871 To Make Cows Give Milk - The agricultural editor of the Bee-Keepers' Journal ventures for the following handed him by a friend: If you desire to get a large yield of milk, give you cow, three times a day, water slightly warm, slightly salted, in which bran has been stirred, at the rate of one quart to two gallons of water. You will find your cow will gain twenty-five per cent., immediately, under the effects of it, and will become so attached to it as to refuse to drink clear water, unless very thirsty. The Barrel Coop — This is an appliance to keep chicks, that any one can make, with very little trouble. All that is necessary, is to place a common flour or other barrel on its side, take out one of the heads, place some straw in the back end of the barrel; put the hen and chicks in; have some lath, or strips or boards at hand, with one end sharpened, and drive them into the ground in front of the croop, and your work is accomplished. — Rural New Yorker. A gentleman in Michigan has succeeded in selling his second hand wife for $10. The transaction took place in Flint, where sparks are numerous enough to create some competition. In other parts of the State $5 is quoted as the current price of such commodities.
