Our Next Congressman
The papers throughout this Congressional District are already reviewing the hold, in order to arrive at some conclusion as to who is to be our next Congressman, and from what locality he is to be selected. The Alta claims that San Francisco should, as usual, send one of her citizens, because, forsooth, she has certain interests at stake, and measures pending in Congress. Thus the acknowledgment is made, that her interests are already before Congress with some prospects of advantage—while the interests of the lower counties are unknown in Congress, and must remain so. While it is but natural that San Francisco should endeavor to continue to monopolize the Congressional appointment from this District, it is, at the same time quite unnatural that we should see it in that light. The hired statistical editor of Mother Alta announces as follows:
"Los Angeles, San Diego and San Bernardino counties have a population of 21,000 against 150,000 in San Francisco. 26,000 in Santa Clara, and about 40,000 in the remainder of the district. San Francisco has more than half the population of the district, and much more than half the business at Washington, (why not say all of it?) and wants to have something to say about this Congressional nomination."
These figures of the Alta give San Francisco city and county a large majority over the whole of the district outside of it. Therefore, she arrogates
San Francisco has more than half the population of the district, and much more than half the business at Washington (why not say all of it?) and wants to have something to say about this Congressional nomination."
These figures of the Alta give San Francisco city and county a large majority over the whole of the district outside of it. Therefore, she arrogates to do as she pleases with six hundred miles of sea coast bordering eight counties, the least of which is of greater extent and value than her own worthless sand hills.
From this declaration of the Alta, we are made to see obstacles, apparently of such a nature as to be removed by one process alone—and that process is to capture San Francisco. We must work for the nomination of such a man from our locality, as has strength even in San Francisco. We must work for some men who have friends there, and who will carry prestige by his standing and abilities. We have such a man on the lower coast, and when he unfurls his banner to the breeze, look out! ye famishing, political monopolists, of San Francisco!
Giving Pits.—The Prescott Miner is gently pitching into the Tucson Citizen and San Diego Bulletin. We think we read pistols at day-break, in some of these polite insinnations; but if the sword of the editor of the Miner is equal to his pen, he need have no fears.
Editorial Visit.—We had the pleasure of a visit, on Thursday last, from Major II. M. Mitchel, local editor of the Los Angeles Daily Star. He was on a scout for the ducks, quail, and wild curlew of the Santa Ana, and was accompanied by Capt. Glassell and Mr. Thad Travis.
Ball to Niour.—The ball of the Anaheim Liederkranz, will take place at the Public School House, this evening, instead of at the place heretofore designated. Ample preparation has been made, and all who attend will be certain to have a pleasant time.

ANNHEIM WINE
The Alta of the 25th, has the following concerning Anaheim wine:
The chief wine establishment of the State, and we presume very few in Europe handle quantities so large, as the Anaheim Wine growers' Association; which, in 1870 made 500,000 gallons, and shipped 267,000 gallons to the Eastern States; and in 1869 made 296,000 gallons. The increase from 1869 to 1870 is very large. The Company owns no land in its corporate capacity, but the shareholders, in their individual capacity, have 150,000 vines, and the Company makes the wine for them, and also buys grapes and wine from other vineyards in Anaheim. The Company commenced on a small scale about seven years ago, but has grown to be one of the remarkable features of California. The shareholders own about one fourth of the vines at Anaheim, but the company makes five-eighths of the wine.
The steamship William Tabor, took on quite a number of pipes of wine at Anaheim Landing on Tuesday last—carrying them at 50 cents per pipe cheaper than the regular line. Another steamship—mate to the Tabor—is on her way from New York to run on our coast route.
Horses—Quite a lot of hope are being plained hereabouts."
The Name "Anahheim"—its Population, Resources, Elevation
A lady, writing to the Gazette, from La Fayette, Indiana, makes the following inquiry concerning the name Anahheim, and the population of our city:
"As the name 'Anahheim' is perfectly new to me, and as I cannot find it in any geographical work at my command, I am at a loss how to pronounce it correctly. Will you please insert a paragraph in the Gazette, giving its exact pronunciation, and also state the number of its inhabitants—if it is situated directly on the sea coast—and which is the farthest north, it or Los Angeles. By doing this, you will favor myself and others, who intend making our homes in your evergreen valle."
Strictly speaking, Anahheim means Anna-home, or the home of Anna; but its name did not originate by reason of any woman named Anna, but from the Santa Ana river adjacent to the city Heim, in German, is home; and the Germans who settled the place some twelve years ago, regarding it as their permanent future home, named it so in connection with the river (Santa) Ana, which, in the Spanish, is spelled with one "n"—hence the name Anahheim. As to the pronunciation of the word, the accent in the second syllable is on the "i," instead of the "e." In all German words, where the "o" and "i" come together, the accent is on the last of the two.
Anahheim has a population of 1,000 souls; produces—within its corporate limits—from 800,000 to 1,000,000 gallons of White, Angelica, Port and Claret wines, and Brandy, annually. It also produces raisins, English walnuts, oranges, olives, pomegranates, lemons, almonds, peanuts, castor beans, bananas, limes, figs, apples, pears, pepper
